High burden of homelessness among sexual-minority adolescents: findings from a representative Massachusetts high school sample.

OBJECTIVES: We compared the prevalence of current homelessness among adolescents reporting a minority sexual orientation (lesbian/gay, bisexual, unsure, or heterosexual with same-sex sexual partners) with that among exclusively heterosexual adolescents. METHODS: We combined data from the 2005 and 2007 Massachusetts Youth Risk Behavior Survey, a representative sample of public school students in grades 9 though 12 (n = 6317). RESULTS: Approximately 25% of lesbian/gay, 15% of bisexual, and 3% of exclusively heterosexual Massachusetts public high school students were homeless. Sexual-minority m

HIV-1 subtype in Scotland: the establishment of a national surveillance system.

Historically, subtype B viruses in men who have sex with men (MSM) and injecting drug users (IDU) dominated the HIV epidemic in the United Kingdom, whereas non-B heterosexual infections dominate globally. Heterosexual contact is now the most common route of transmission in the United Kingdom. Here we monitor HIV subtype in Scotland, and link it to origin of infection. HIV-1 sequence was generated from new diagnoses and the subtype thus obtained linked with demographic data. Virus was subtyped from 80% (137/171) of all new diagnoses in Scotland. Of 58 individuals infected by heterosexual contac

Blood donors with antibody to the human immunodeficiency virus--the Natal experience.

The major incursion of human immunodeficiency virus type I (HIV-1) infection into the South African heterosexual population has been by southerly migration of the heterosexual HIV-1 epidemic from central Africa. Much important information can be obtained from blood donor seroprevalence data and cohort studies of those individuals infected during the early stages of the epidemic in South Africa. By the end of April 1989, over half a million blood donors in Natal had been screened and the presence of antibody to HIV-1 confirmed in more than 200. The majority of these anti-HIV-1 positive donors a

Post-traumatic stress disorder and adverse pregnancy outcomes: sexual orientation disparities in a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a recognized risk factor for adverse pregnancy outcomes. Growing research indicates that sexual minority (SM) people face elevated risks for both PTSD symptoms/diagnosis and adverse pregnancy outcomes. However, no research has examined whether the association between sexual orientation and adverse pregnancy outcomes differs by PTSD symptoms/diagnosis. METHODS: We used longitudinal data from the Nurses' Health Study 3, a longitudinal cohort of nurses born on or after January 1, 1965, living in the US or Canada. We restricted analyses to thos

Mental health and help-seeking in Czech sexual minorities: a nationally representative cross-sectional study.

AIMS: The mental health of sexual minority (SM) individuals remains overlooked and understudied in Czechia. We aimed to estimate (1) the prevalence rate and (2) the relative risk of common mental disorders and (3) the mental distress severity among the Czech SM people compared with the heterosexual population. In addition, we aimed to investigate help-seeking for mental disorders in SM people. METHODS: We used data from a cross-sectional, nationally representative survey of Czech community-dwelling adults, consisting of 3063 respondents (response rate = 58.62%). We used the Mini-International

Many but small HIV-1 non-B transmission chains in the Netherlands.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate introductions and spread of different HIV-1 subtypes in the Netherlands. DESIGN: We identified distinct HIV-1 transmission chains in the Netherlands within the global epidemic context through viral phylogenetic analysis of partial HIV-1 polymerase sequences from individuals enrolled in the ATHENA national HIV cohort of all persons in care since 1996, and publicly available international background sequences. METHODS: Viral lineages circulating in the Netherlands were identified through maximum parsimony phylogeographic analysis. The proport

Elevated risk of substance use disorder and suicidal ideation among Black and Hispanic lesbian, gay, and bisexual adults.

OBJECTIVE: Black and Hispanic persons who identify as lesbian, gay, or bisexual (LGB) experience health disparities relative to non-Hispanic White and heterosexual groups respectively, including higher rates of suicidal ideation (SI) and substance use disorder (SUD). To elucidate intersectional risk, we used a large national sample to examine rates of SI, SUD, and their co-occurrence (SI + SUD) at the intersection of sexual identity and race/ethnicity. METHOD: Data were from five years (2015-2019) of the National Survey of Drug Use and Heath (unweighted N = 189,127). Multinomial logistic regr

Lesbian and bisexual women's gynaecological conditions: a systematic review and exploratory meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the gynaecological health of lesbian and bisexual (LB) women. OBJECTIVES: To examine differences in incidence and/or prevalence of gynaecological conditions in LB compared with heterosexual women. SEARCH STRATEGY: The systematic review protocol was prospectively registered (PROSPERO-CRD42015027091) and searches conducted in seven databases. SELECTION CRITERIA: Comparative studies published 2000-2015, reporting any benign (non-infectious) and/or malignant gynaecological conditions with no language or setting restrictions. Molecular epidemiology of HIV-1 infection in Taiwan from 2005 to 2008: further spread of CRF07_BC and emergence of CRF07_BC/subtype B dual infection.

BACKGROUND: In 2004, HIV-1 infection among Taiwanese injection drug users (IDUs) started to surge. In 2007, a resurgence of HIV-1 epidemic among men having sex with men (MSM) occurred. We conducted a molecular epidemiological study of HIV-1 among different risk groups in Taiwan from 2005 to 2008. METHODS: In total 1133 HIV-1-infected adults including 576 IDUs, 464 MSM, and 93 heterosexuals were recruited. HIV-1 subtypes were determined using nested multiplex polymerase chain reaction and phylogenetic analysis. Dual infection was confirmed using cloning, sequencing, and heteroduplex mobility a

A birth cohort analysis of AIDS in Europe: high incidence among young persons at risk.

OBJECTIVES: To study trends in AIDS incidence in Europe by age and year of birth. DESIGN: Age-period-cohort analyses were adopted to distinguish the different time factors of calendar year, age and year of birth. METHODS: Non-aggregate AIDS incidence data from 12 European countries (1978-1994) were adjusted for reporting delay and expressed per unit of population (per 100000 persons or 100000 person-years). Age-specific incidence patterns (absolute level and rate of increase) were compared between 5-year birth cohorts for homo-/bisexual men, injecting drug users (IDU) and heterosexual contac

Female responsiveness to erotic films and the "ideal" erotic film from a feminine perspective.

Subjects were 20 volunteers randomly selected from all female undergraduate students attending a local university, who were 21 years of age or older, and living off campus. The stimuli consisted of seven films, of approximately 5 minutes duration each, which depicted various types of human sexual behavior. Themes included "romantic" heterosexual behavior, primarily genital heterosexual behavior, a mild, and an explicit form of group-sex behavior, a mild and explicit form of heterosexual sadomasochistic behavior, and male homosexuality. Subjects rated the degree of sexual arousal experienced fo

Fraternal Birth Order Effect and Other Sibship Effects in Bisexual and Asexual Men and Women.

Previous research has shown that homosexual men and women tend to have more older brothers than their heterosexual counterparts-this is known as the fraternal birth order effect (FBOE) and is usually considered a marker for biological development of sexual orientation. Recent studies suggest this effect might also apply to bisexual and asexual individuals who have been overlooked by previous scholarship. In this study, I explored associations of the FBOE and other sibship effects with minority sexual orientation in an online collected sample of heterosexual (n = 1174), bisexual (n = 432), and

Sexual orientation and demographic, cultural, and psychological factors associated with the perpetration and victimization of intimate partner violence among Hispanic men.

Hispanics are disproportionately affected by intimate partner violence (IPV). Most of the research describing factors associated with intimate partner violence among Hispanics has focused on Hispanic women or Hispanics in heterosexual relationships. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship among sexual orientation (heterosexual, homosexual, and bisexual), and demographic, cultural, and psychological factors and intimate partner violence among Hispanic men. A cross sectional questionnaire was administered to 160 Hispanic heterosexual men and men who have sex with men. Demograph

Social desirability response set and systematic distortion in the self-report of adult male gender patients.

This study showed that the "socially desirable" presentation for a heterosexual male gender dysphoric is one that emphasizes traits and behaviors characteristic of "classic" transsexualism. Fifty-one homosexual and 64 heterosexual adult male gender patients were administered the Crowne-Marlowe (1964) Social Desirability Scale as well as eight questionnaire measures that tapped various features of the clinical history commonly given great weight in differential diagnosis. The tendency for a heterosexual subject to describe himself in terms of moral excellence or admirable personal qualities was

Lymphocytotoxic antibodies in the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS).

The acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) manifested by opportunistic infections or Kaposi's sarcoma is a newly recognized and often fatal disease. Three patients seen in Syracuse, New York, were noted to have lymphopenia and persistent serum lymphocytotoxic antibodies (LCTAs). In a double blinded study, 25 serum samples were coded and sent to us by the Centers for Disease Control Task Force on Kaposi's Sarcoma and Opportunistic Infections. Samples from 5 patients with Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, 5 patients with Kaposi's sarcoma, 5 presumably healthy homosexual males, 5 presumably hea

Parental physical abuse and sexual orientation in males.

Because male homosexuals have usually been found to have poorer relationships with their fathers than male heterosexuals, and because children who are disappointments to their parents are more likely to be physically abused than other children, it was hypothesized that gays are more likely than heterosexual men to have been physically abused by parents. This hypothesis was tested comparing 17 gay male college students and 67 heterosexual male college students. Gay males were found to have been more abused during adolescence. Abuse was related to a history of childhood femininity, to having poo

Male transsexuals in the homosexual subculture.

The author describes 20 male transsexuals who differ from most discussed in professional studies and from those in media portrayals in that they live in the male homosexual subculture. Furthermore, interviews with these individuals indicated that transsexuals are no more sexually or socially homogeneous than heterosexuals or homosexuals. In general, these men entered the homosexual subculture in their teens; they knew they were not heterosexual and therefore assumed they must be homosexual. As their gender identity crystallized, homosexual activity became repugnant and they rejected and were r

On the evocability of a positive oestrogen feedback action on LH secretion in transsexual men and women.

In transsexual men with homosexual behaviour and intact testicular function, as well as in homosexual men with normal gender identity, following a negative oestrogen feedback effect a delayed positive oestrogen feedback action on LH secretion was evoked. By contrast, in transsexual men with hypo- or asexuality and intact testes or hypergonadotrophic hypo- or agonadism, as well as in heterosexual men with normal gender identity, a negative oestrogen feedback effect was not followed by a positive feedback action on LH release. In transsexual women with homosexual behaviour and oligo- and/or hypo

Depression in Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Members of the Canadian Armed Forces.

PURPOSE: Lesbians, gay men, and bisexuals have been shown to have different risks for mood and anxiety disorders than heterosexuals in population studies, but there is a paucity of research in this area in military populations. This study examined the relationship between sexual orientation and depression in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF). METHODS: Data were drawn from the Canadian Forces Mental Health Survey 2013 (n = 8165), a representative sample of Regular and Reserve members of the Canadian military. Binomial logistic regression was used to predict 12-month and lifetime odds ratios for
