The tensions between queer and gay rights theorists, not surprisingly, have grown as queer theory has developed and matured. This systematic literature review addresses risk and protective factors associated with suicidal ideation and attempts in young men who have sex with men (YMSM). Based on a multidimensional model of sexual identity development, the current study examined self-labeling, romantic, and sexual experiences among middle and late adolescent sexual minorities. Eighty-two youths between the ages of 14 and 21 were recruited from gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) community centers and associated Internet groups. The extant literature concerning attitudes toward gay men and lesbians was reviewed, with a particular emphasis on the attitudes of mental health professionals. BACKGROUND: Prejudice against lesbians and gay men (PALG) is associated with poorer well-being among sexual-minority people and with broader intergroup tension. Efforts to reduce it may benefit from pairing accurate information about sexual orientation with guided evaluation of the evidence and reasoning behind prejudicial claims. This study tested whether participants assigned to a brief sexual-orientation-focused instructional intervention incorporating critical-thinking elements would display lower immediate self-reported PALG than participants assigned to a neutral-video control condition.
