Dark CO2 fixation in soils: A meta-analysis of mechanisms and controlling factors.

Dark CO2 fixation (DCF) in soil is a carbon sink process, in which microorganisms reduce CO2 to organic matter. This process occurs most at the oxygen-anoxia interface, where microorganisms oxidize reduced inorganic substrates to obtain metabolic energy. By synthesizing 215 observations from 27 peer-reviewed studies and one controlled condition study using 13C-, 14C-based approaches, we conducted a meta-analysis to quantify DCF rates and identify their controlling factors across soils. Soils have an average DCF rate of 0.26 ± 0.02 μg C g-1 soil day-1, with the highest rates in wetlands (0.48 μ

Advancing real-time coastal data monitoring: Bio-optical property analysis (chlorophyll-a and TSM) in the Northern Bay of Bengal using Sentinel-3 OLCI, IRS Oceansat-3, and artificial neural networks.

Monitoring bio-optical attributes in estuarine environments is crucial for understanding ecosystem productivity, sediment dynamics, and climate-induced hydrological changes. This research introduces an integrated multi-sensor and machine learning approach to assess the spatiotemporal variability of Chl-a and TSM within the Northern Bay of Bengal. In-situ data gathered during pre-monsoon, monsoon, and post-monsoon seasons were integrated with satellite observations from Sentinel-3 OLCI and Oceansat-3 OCM to investigate seasonal trends and to train ANN models for enhanced parameter retrieval. Monsoon-triggered surges of antibiotic resistance genes in urban Indian rivers impacted by untreated wastewater.

In many low- and middle-income countries, intense seasonal rainfall can strongly reshape pollutant dynamics in urban rivers receiving untreated sewage and solid waste, with potential consequences for antibiotic resistance dissemination. Here, we examined monsoon-driven changes in the relative abundance and distribution of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in two heavily polluted sub-tributaries of the Ganga River, the Bindal and Rispana, flowing through Dehradun, India. Water and sediment samples were collected across three hydrological periods in 2019, summer (pre-monsoon), monsoon, and wint

Impact of Chamaecrista rotundifolia cover cropping on soil elemental cycling in karst agroecosystems.

Karst desertification causes severe soil erosion, hydrological imbalance, and biodiversity loss, thereby threatening ecosystem resilience and agricultural productivity. Soil carbon (C), nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and sulfur (S) cycling underpin ecosystem stability, yet how agricultural management practices regulate multi-element cycling in degraded karst agroecosystems remains poorly understood. Here, we conducted a four-year field trial in a karst mango orchard in southwestern China and integrated metagenomic sequencing with comprehensive soil environmental profiling to investigate how C.

Rainfall events and mortality in Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Extreme rainfall is expected to intensify with climate change, yet short-term health effects can plausibly be harmful (flooding, contamination, access disruption) or protective (pollution washout, cooling). Robust, comparable evidence at national scale is scarce for Brazil. OBJECTIVE: We analyzed daily mortality for all-cause, cardiovascular, respiratory, and infectious outcomes across all Brazilian municipalities from 2003-2023. METHODS: Rainfall extremes were defined hydrologically using regional frequency analysis. In the first stage, we fit state-level conditional quasi-Poiss

Flood Hazard Assessment using Rainfall Data (1995-2025) with a Hydrograph Approach and an Eco-Geomorphic Overview in Padang City, Indonesia.

Padang City experiences recurrent flooding because intense rainfall, rapid runoff from eastern catchments, low-lying floodplains, and coastal-estuarine backwater effects interact across a developed watershed continuum. Existing assessments often examine rainfall, runoff response, spatial hazard, and ecological functions separately, limiting integrated flood-risk reduction and land-use planning. This study aims to 1) analyze areal rainfall frequency for 1995-2025 using the Annual Maximum Series of 24-hour Rainfall (R24/AMS), the Log-Pearson Type III (LP-III) distribution, and the Kolmogorov-Smi

Fencing the Flux: Seasonal Trends, Environmental Drivers, and Mitigation Opportunities of Methane Emissions From Farm Dams.

Farm dams are significant methane (CH4) sources in agricultural landscapes. Fencing them to limit livestock access reduces organic matter and nutrient inputs, thereby limiting CH4 emissions. However, existing studies on the benefits of fencing are constrained by short durations, omission of ebullitive fluxes, limited spatial and temporal coverage, and small sample sizes. Here, we report a large-scale, multi-season assessment of total CH4 (diffusive + ebullitive) and carbon dioxide (CO2) fluxes from fenced and unfenced farm dams, along key environmental drivers. We monitored 113 farm dams in te

Water economics of African savanna herbivores: How much does plant moisture matter?

Water is an essential and often limiting resource that pervades all aspects of animal ecology. Yet, water economics are grossly understudied relative to foraging and predation, leaving ecologists ill-equipped to predict how the intensifying disruption of hydrological regimes worldwide will impact communities. For savanna herbivores, reliance on surface water can increase exposure to predators and competitors, and thus strategies that reduce the need to drink are advantageous. Yet, the extent to which increasing dietary water intake while decreasing water loss enables animals to forego drinking

Modeling solutions for microbial water contamination in the global south for public health protection.

Microbial contamination of water sources is a pressing global challenge, disproportionately affecting developing regions with inadequate infrastructure and limited access to safe drinking water. In the Global South, waterborne pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, protozoa, and helminths contribute to diseases like cholera, dysentery, and typhoid fever, resulting in severe public health burdens. Predictive modeling emerges as a pivotal tool in addressing these challenges, offering data-driven insights to anticipate contamination events and optimize mitigation strategies. This review highlights

Enhancing vulnerability assessment through spatially explicit modeling of mountain social-ecological systems exposed to multiple environmental hazards.

The evaluation of the vulnerability of coupled socio-ecological systems is critical for addressing and preventing the adverse impacts of various environmental hazards and devising strategies for climate change adaptation. The initial step in vulnerability assessment involves exposure assessment, which entails quantifying and mapping the risks posed by multiple environmental hazards, thereby offering valuable insights for the implementation of vulnerability assessment methodologies. Consequently, this study sought to model the exposure of coupled social-ecological systems in mountainous regions

The underestimated role of manganese in modulating the nutrient structure in a eutrophic seasonally-stratified reservoir.

Accumulation and subsequent release of nutrients have great potential to trigger algal blooms in lakes and reservoirs. We conducted high vertical resolution (2 m interval) monitoring at ∼monthly intervals over a year for hydrological parameters, Chl-a, ammonium (NH4+), nitrate (NO3-) and different species of phosphorus (P) and manganese (Mn) in a 40-meter-deep subtropical reservoir (Shanmei Reservoir) in Fujian, southern China. In this seasonally stratified reservoir featured with high nutrient loading, the consistent trend in the ratio of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) to dissolved inorga

The impact of combined sewer outflows on urban water quality: Spatio-temporal patterns of fecal coliform in indianapolis.

Many urban waterways with older stormwater drainage systems receive a significant amount of untreated or poorly treated waste from Combined Sewer Outflow (CSO) systems during precipitation events. The input of effluent waste from CSO to urban water streams during storm events often leads to elevated fecal coliform, specifically Escherichia Coli (E. Coli) in these waterways. The aim of the study is to examine fecal coliform concentration, water chemistry, and water quality parameters to better understand spatio-temporal patterns of fecal coliform associated with CSO events in three waterways fr

Methods comparison for detecting trends in herbicide monitoring time-series in streams.

An inadvertent consequence of pesticide use is aquatic pesticide pollution, which has prompted the implementation of mitigation measures in many countries. Water quality monitoring programs are an important tool to evaluate the efficacy of these mitigation measures. However, large interannual variability of pesticide losses makes it challenging to detect significant improvements in water quality and to attribute these improvements to the application of specific mitigation measures. Thus, there is a gap in the literature that informs researchers and authorities regarding the number of years of

Biochar and fungi as bioretention amendments for bacteria and PAH removal from stormwater.

Bioretention has been widely used to mitigate hydrologic impacts of stormwater runoff and is increasingly being relied upon to treat chemical and biological pollutants transported by stormwater. Despite this reliance, we still lack an understanding of treatment performance for certain organic and biological contaminants which may interact with biotic and abiotic components of bioretention systems. We evaluated the treatment of fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in stormwater runoff by bioretention. We compared treatment performance by Washington's standa

Pharmaceuticals, illicit drugs and their metabolites in fish from Argentina: Implications for protected areas influenced by urbanization.

Because an understanding of aquatic bioaccumulation of human pharmaceuticals in Latin America is limited, this area was recently identified as a priority environmental quality research need. We examined bioaccumulation of twenty-seven pharmaceuticals, illicit drugs and their metabolites in muscle, liver and gills of multiple fish species (Rhamdia quelen, Hypostomus commersoni, Hoplias lacerdae, Prochilodus lineatus) from an urban river receiving wastewater discharges (Paraná) and a lotic system (Acaraguá) without direct wastewater sources, which runs through a protected area. All samples were

Assessment of the influence of levees along Yangtze River on Oncomelania hupensis, the intermediate host of Schistosoma japonicum.

BACKGROUND: Oncomelania hupensis is the exclusive intermediate host of Schistosoma japonicum in China. Snail control is an essential component of schistosomiasis elimination programme. With 70 years of continuous efforts, the range of O. hupensis had reduced significantly, but slowed down in last decades. A large number of levees against flooding were constructed along Yangtze River and its affiliated lakes in the middle and lower reaches, which influenced the hydrology and ecology in the alluvial plains. The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of levees on the distribution of O. hu…

Revised taxonomy reveals sustained introgression and secondary contact in ancient lake ricefishes.

BACKGROUND: Biotic diversification in ancient lakes is shaped by complex geological histories and genetic exchange among populations. The Malili Lake system on Sulawesi Island represents a classic natural laboratory for studying freshwater fish evolution and harbors multiple endemic Oryzias species that diversified under repeated hydrological reorganizations. Previous genomic analyses inferred that two sympatric species in Lake Towuti (O. profundicola and O. loxolepis) experienced a single ancient introgression event from a "ghost lineage" derived from O. marmoratus inhabiting another lake. Plant water adaptation strategies and lithological driving mechanisms in karst ecosystems: A review.

The karst region of Southwest China is characterized by extensive bedrock exposure and limited soil cover, forming a dual structure of soil and water. Such unique geological background makes epikarst water a critical water source for plants, while bedrock lithology is the key factor driving the development and water storage capacity of epikarst zone. Under the combined impacts of extreme climate events and frequent karstic drought, the sustainability of vegetation restoration faces severe challenges. It is crucial to clarify the influences of lithology-regulated water supply on plant adaptatio

From rainfall to seafloor: Tracing riverine and urban stormwater litter transport in Mediterranean fishing grounds through systematic meteorological station testing.

Precipitation can mobilize terrestrial litter into coastal waters through urban stormwater pathways, potentially including combined sewer outflows (CSOs), but establishing quantitative relationships between rainfall and benthic litter accumulation has proven challenging. River discharge adds complexity by potentially washing litter away from fishing grounds. We tested 54 meteorological station-fishing ground combinations across nine ports in the northwestern Mediterranean (2019-2024, 236 trawl hauls), examining precipitation windows from 2 to 20 weeks and river discharge effects at six connect

Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) Spatial Prioritisation through Global Sensitivity Analysis for Effective Urban Pluvial Flood Mitigation.

Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) has attracted growing attention as a sustainable approach for mitigating pluvial flooding (also known as flash flooding), which is expected to increase in frequency and intensity under the impacts of climate change and urbanisation. However, spatial planning of WSUD is not an easy task, not only due to the complex urban environment, but also the fact that not all locations in the catchment are equally effective for flood mitigation. In this study, we developed a new WSUD spatial prioritisation framework that applies global sensitivity analysis (GSA) to ident
