Total kidney GFR's, urine flow, inorganic ion excretion, and single nephron glomerular filtration rates (SNGFRs) were evaluated in anesthetized starlings under control conditions (2.5% mannitol infusion) and in starlings subjected to an osmotic stress induced by the intravenous infusion of 5.8% sodium chloride. Under control conditions the GFR was 2.92 ml/kg per min, urine flow 0.20 ml/kg per min, 63% of filtered sodium was reabsorbed, mean mammalian type (MT) SNGFR was 15.6 nl/min, and mean reptilian type (RT) SNGFR was 7.0 nl/min. During osmotic stress the GFR did not change, urine flow incr

To examine if hypothalamic or pituitary hormones are involved in the induction of the natriuresis which follows the injection of hypertonic saline or norepinephrine into the third ventricle, lesions were placed in the median eminence and the responses to intraventricular norepinephrine or hypertonic saline were evaluated. Sham lesions in which the electrode was lowered into the brain but stopped short of the hypothalamic region did not interfere with the natriuresis, kaliuresis, and antidiuresis induced by the third ventricular injection of either hypertonic sodium chloride or norepinephrine.

BACKGROUND: Rhinitis symptoms can be produced or augmented by neural mechanisms. Azelastine, a pharmacologic agent with potent H1-receptor blocking activity can inhibit the release of various mediators implicated in the pathogenesis of nasal hyperresponsiveness. The therapeutic benefits of topical intranasal azelastine on symptoms of perennial nonallergic rhinitis (NAR) are in part because of an impact on neural mechanisms. Assessment of changes in the concentration of substance P (SP) in nasal lavage fluid before and after saline hypertonic challenge may be a means of assessing the effect of

INTRODUCTION: The treatment of hydatid disease is largely surgical, with medical treatment being reserved as coadjuvant treatment. The scolicidal agents have been, and are being used mainly during surgical manipulation of the cysts, with the object of avoiding relapses and peritoneal dissemination.
OBJECTIVE: Evaluation of the scolicidal agents used in surgery in a hydatid disease model in the mouse.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We have used 85 Swiss OF1 mice, weighing more than 30 g, of 90 +/- 10 days of age, in which a picture of hydatid sowing was reproduced by means of intra-peritoneal inoculat

Nuclear factor of activated T cells 5 (NFAT5)/Tonicity enhancer binding protein (TonEBP) is a transcription factor induced by hypertonic stress in the kidney. However, the function of NFAT5 in other organs has rarely been studied, even though it is ubiquitously expressed. Indeed, although NFAT5 was reported to be critical for heart development and function, its role in infectious heart diseases has remained obscure. In this study, we aimed to understand the mechanism by which NFAT5 interferes with infection of Coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3), a major cause of viral myocarditis. Our initial results de

Three patients had pellucid marginal corneal degeneration complicated by corneal edema. The corneal edema appeared to be a result of a break or detachment of Descemet's membrane as a result of increasing corneal ectasia. The disruption in Descemet's membrane began just above the inferior, crescent-shaped area of stromal thinning. Therapeutic modalities initially included hypertonic solution to determine whether corneal edema would resolve spontaneously, apparently by endothelial migration with healing over the break in Descemet's membrane. One patient required thermokeratoplasty and another pe

An 11-month-old female infant diagnosed with classic subtype IB maple syrup urine disease underwent living donor liver transplantation. Blood samples for plasma amino acid analysis were collected during the three phases of the operation. Despite the perioperative prophylactic administration of 12.5% hypertonic dextrose solution with insulin and a 20% intralipid emulsion, the blood levels of the branched-chain amino acids increased dramatically during surgery, consistent with an acute intraoperative metabolic decompensation. However, these blood levels normalized soon after liver transplantatio

The involvement of spinal column in cyst hydatid disease is rare and hard to treat. The gold standard treatment is total removal of the cysts without rupture. However, recurrence after surgery is almost inevitable and reoperations carries technical difficulties and higher morbidity. We present a 69-year-old woman with two cystic masses at the T12 level, which compress the spinal cord causing severe paresis in her left leg. Under local anestesia, the cysts were aspirated and irrigated with 20% hypertonic saline solution via bilateral T12 transpedicular route. We aimed to report that percutaneou

BACKGROUND: Currently, regional citrate anticoagulation (RCA) is the preferred approach for continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), and several RCA protocols are commercially available. This study was aimed at comparing two RCA modalities for CRRT in terms of safety, workload, effectiveness, and costs.
METHODS: We prospectively evaluated two different RCA approaches in patients admitted to our intensive care unit (ICU) who needed CRRT. Patients with acute liver failure were excluded. We compared a hypertonic sodium-citrate solution 136 mmol/L added before the filter as anticoagulant duri

BACKGROUND: The clinical benefits of using icodextrin during acute peritonitis in peritoneal dialysis are uncertain. On the premise that high glucose concentration might jeopardize the peritoneal defense during peritonitis, icodextrin administration during acute peritonitis could have the potential to improve the peritonitis outcome whilst improving ultrafiltration.
METHODS: We conducted a single-center, open-label, randomized controlled trial in which 53 adult continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis patients underwent randomization to receive either icodextrin or original glucose-based dia

BACKGROUND: Cervical central stenosis (CCS) is a narrowing of the spinal canal that can cause mechanical compression of the spinal nerve and roots, leading to neck pain and/or radicular pain. Cervical epidural steroid injections are commonly used in the treatment of CCS. After failure of epidural steroid injections, the next sequential step is percutaneous adhesiolysis with a targeted drug delivery.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of our study is to evaluate the effectiveness of percutaneous cervical epidural adhesiolysis in patients with chronic posterior neck pain and upper extremity pain due to CCS.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of sonographically guided percutaneous drainage and irrigation of hepatic hydatid cysts.
METHODS: Sixty-one patients with 84 hepatic hydatid cysts were treated using the puncture, aspiration, injection, and reaspiration (PAIR) technique under sonographic guidance. Patients with cysts larger than 6 cm in diameter underwent PAIR followed by percutaneous drainage (PAIR-PD). The cysts were sterilized by the injection of 1 of 2 scolicidal agents, 20% hypertonic saline solution (38 patients) or 0.5% silver nitrate (23 patien
