Beyond diagnosis: a network approach to the emotional and control processes involved in the binge eating spectrum disorders.

Binge spectrum eating disorders (BSED) are increasingly prevalent, particularly among young adults, and are associated with significant physical and psychological comorbidities. Despite their rising prevalence, the mechanisms underlying symptom maintenance and interrelations remain poorly understood. This study aimed to visualize the complex interactions among eating-related severity, biological factors, and psychological processes in patients across the BSED spectrum. Network analysis was applied to a sample of N = 187 patients with BSED (119 women, 68 men), aged 18–45 years. Several nodes oc

Evaluating the use of body mass index change as a proxy for anorexia nervosa recovery: a machine learning perspective.

This paper critically examines the study by Brizzi et al., which applied explainable machine learning to predict short-term treatment outcomes in patients hospitalized for anorexia nervosa (AN). While the study presents an innovative and promising methodological framework, important conceptual and practical issues warrant further scrutiny. Chief among these is the reliance on body mass index (BMI) change as the sole proxy for treatment efficacy. This unidimensional metric, though pragmatic in acute inpatient settings, fails to capture the broader psychological and behavioral dimensions integra

Multi-level Hierarchical Complex Behavior Monitoring System for Dog Psychological Separation Anxiety Symptoms.

An increasing number of people own dogs due to the emotional benefits they bring to their owners. However, many owners are forced to leave their dogs at home alone, increasing the risk of developing psychological disorders such as separation anxiety, typically accompanied by complex behavioral symptoms including excessive vocalization and destructive behavior. Hence, this work proposes a multi-level hierarchical early detection system for psychological Separation Anxiety (SA) symptoms detection that automatically monitors home-alone dogs starting from the most fundamental postures, followed by

Women's concerns about the emotional impact of awareness of heritable breast cancer risk and its implications for their children.

Women tested for mutations in BRCA1/2 genes who have minor-aged children confront difficult decisions about if, when, and how to share information about hereditary cancer risk with their children. These choices are often seemingly influenced by how mothers anticipate the emotional burdens they and their children will experience in response to test results. Here, we investigate the association between maternal cognitions, pretest psychological well-being, and coping style with mothers' anticipated emotional reactions to learning that they are BRCA1/2 mutation carriers (N = 205). In a linear reg

Trauma and stress response among Hurricane Katrina evacuees.

OBJECTIVES: Hurricane Katrina's impact on public health has been significant and multifaceted, with trauma-related psychological sequelae likely to result in a sizable burden of disease. Data were collected that assessed acute stress disorder (ASD) prevalence and factors related to ASD symptomatology among sheltered evacuees. METHODS: On days 12 to 19 after Katrina, evacuees at a major emergency shelter completed surveys that assessed demographics, Katrina-specific experiences, and ASD symptomatology. RESULTS: Sixty-two percent of the sample met ASD threshold criterion. Projections based on

[Tumor risk consultation for predisposed women from high risk cancer families].

Germline mutations of the cancer susceptibility genes BRCA1 and BRCA2 seem to lead to a very high risk for breast and/or ovarian cancer. Therefore, genetic counselling and identification of high-risk families may be essential to offer the opportunity to participate in a specific early cancer detection program and to provide individualized psychological support. In a two year period (August 1994-August 1997) 304 consultees present for genetic counselling at the interdisciplinary cancer genetic clinic (Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Human Genetics, Heinrich-Heine-Universität, Düsseldo

"I'm always going to be tired": a qualitative exploration of adolescents' experiences of fatigue in depression.

Adolescent depression is a prevalent and disabling condition, but current psychological treatments are only moderately effective. One way to enhance outcomes is to further our understanding of adolescent depression and improve our capacity to target the most frequently reported and problematic symptoms. A common but often neglected symptom of depression is fatigue, which is associated with considerable impairment and has the potential to interfere with adolescents' engagement in psychological therapies. Despite this, the experience of fatigue in adolescent depression and how we target it in tr

Functional gastrointestinal disorders: advances in understanding and management.

Gastrointestinal symptoms are highly prevalent, but many people who have them will have no organic explanation for their symptoms. Most of these people will be labelled as having a functional gastrointestinal disorder, such as irritable bowel syndrome, functional dyspepsia, or functional constipation. These conditions affect up to 40% of people at any one point in time, and two-thirds of these people will have chronic, fluctuating symptoms. The pathophysiology of functional gastrointestinal disorders is complex, but involves bidirectional dysregulation of gut-brain interaction (via the gut-bra

Analysis of psychosocial stress factors in patients with renal cancer.

BACKGROUND: The experience of stress in patients with cancer through helplessness and the suppression of emotions correlates with unfavorable disease prognosis. Significant distress can reduce survival probability as well as subjectively perceived poor quality of life. Currently, there are few data on psychological stress in patients with renal cancer and most studies focus on survival time. The aim of the study was to evaluate the psychosocial stress of patients with renal cancer with screening questionnaires for an inpatient psychosocial treatment program. METHODS: Patients undergoing inpat

Intermittent catheterization acceptance test (I-CAT): A tool to evaluate the global acceptance to practice clean intermittent self-catheterization.

AIM: In certain cases, a patient's anxiety, fear, or misconceptions can represent significant obstacles to the learning of Clean Intermittent Self Catheterization (CISC), and little is known about these psychological barriers. The aim of the present study is thus to construct and validate an "Intermittent Catheterization Acceptance Test (I-CAT)" to evaluate the psychological acceptance of CISC. METHODS: A study was carried out in nine neuro-rehabilitation and urology departments in French university hospitals. Fifty-five items were identified, following a comprehensive review of the literatur

[Acne and mycoses : between non-drug treatments and resistance].

This article focuses on recent developments regarding acne and fungal infections. Primary care physicians are in a unique position to screen for these disorders during consultations. Non-pharmacological approaches (such as diet and physical treatments) are the subject of ongoing scientific research and are of interest to patients but have not yet been incorporated into guidelines due to a lack of robust evidence. Recent studies highlight the psychological impact of acne, with a high prevalence of anxiety and depression among affected individuals. Regarding fungal infections, the recent emergen

[Obsessive compulsive disorder and deep brain stimulation, a future so close].

The obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is a psychiatric disorder with a high prevalence (2‑3 %), frequently causing a disabling condition. Drug and psychotherapeutic treatment is generally effective. However about 1/3 of the patients are treatment-resistant, suffering from chronic psychological distress with important sociofunctional repercussions. The identification of dysfunctional neural networks in this disease opens the door to the use of neuromodulation techniques, as deep brain stimulation (DBS). We discuss the clinical results of subthalamic nucleus DBS and the involvement of this nuc

Physical activity recommendations for children with specific chronic health conditions: Juvenile idiopathic arthritis, hemophilia, asthma and cystic fibrosis.

As a group, children with a chronic disease or disability are less active than their healthy peers. There are many reasons for suboptimal physical activity, including biological, psychological and social factors. Furthermore, the lack of specific guidelines for 'safe' physical activity participation poses a barrier to increasing activity. Physical activity provides significant general health benefits and may improve disease outcomes. Each child with a chronic illness should be evaluated by an experienced physician for activity counselling and for identifing any contraindications to participati

[History of Williams syndrome].

History of the Williams syndrome (WS) represents a process of detailed analysis of phenotypic markers and of attempts to reveal their origin. This demanding tasks have brought many valuable findings, which were employed in different fields of medicine, namely in cardiology, metabolism, genetics, psychology and cognitive neurosciences. Discovery of the genetic basis of the disease closed the first period of the syndrome analysis. Genetic studies have been proceeding and WS can be taken as a model syndrome for the behavioral genes identification. Similarly the description of the pathogenesis of

COPD and Comorbid Mental Health: Addressing Anxiety, and Depression, and Their Clinical Management.

Anxiety and depression are common comorbidities in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which can contribute to increased morbidity, reduced quality of life, and worse clinical outcomes. Nevertheless, these psychological conditions remain largely overlooked. This narrative review includes studies published between 1983 and 2025 to synthesise the current evidence on the risk factors, clinical impacts, and therapeutic strategies for these comorbidities. While the exact mechanisms leading to their increased prevalence are not fully understood, growing evidence implicates a

Self and ego: a network view based on ecology and extended cognition.

Frequently, the terms self and ego are employed as synonyms. From the one hand, this can obscure and confound different experiences related to consciousness. On the other hand, this can limit the use of these concepts when trying to express the human potential, and enhance well-being. Following the principles of ecology, system theory, and extended cognition, I propose an operational definition of the self as conscious cognitive unit. As such, it is part of (and dependent by) a wider network, and continuously changing. Nonetheless, such lack of boundaries and stability does not prevent the ide

When Trauma Crosses Generations: Mechanisms, Clinical Patterns and Therapeutic Implications of Transgenerational Trauma-A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Transgenerational trauma (TT)/Intergenerational trauma (IT) is the transmission of the effects of traumatic experiences of parents to their children, who have not themselves experienced traumatic events. This transmission occurs through neurobiological and metabolic changes and the environment in which they were raised. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. PubMed and Google Scholar databases were searched from 2005 to 2025. Studies focusing on adult offspring, exposure to ancestral trauma, biological markers (DNA methylation, co

A latent profile analysis of the functions of binge eating.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to identify naturally occurring groups of individuals experiencing binge eating (BE) symptoms based on their endorsement of varied functions of BE. METHOD: Adults (N = 646) with self-reported BE symptoms were examined using latent profile analysis to identify differentiated profiles based on eight established functions of BE. Profiles were also compared on measures of BE symptoms, eating disorder psychopathology, internal shame, body shame, psychological distress, adverse childhood experiences, and demographic variables. RESULTS: A four-profile solution w

Indolent lymphoma: addressing the needs of survivors.

Over the past two decades, there has been a continuous improvement in outcome for patients with indolent lymphoma (iNHL) resulting in a gradual accumulation of survivors. While life expectancy in the current era approaches that of the lymphoma-free population, patients continue to experience lifelong complications of the disease and its treatment affecting general health, emotional, psychological and social wellbeing, relationships, employment, finances, and fitness. Contemporary care models while suited to the management of lymphoma are often lacking when it comes to identification and manage
