Impulsivity.

Disorders characterized by impulsivity include disorders of impulse control (intermittent explosive disorder, pyromania, kleptomania, pathological gambling and trichotillomania), paraphilias, sexual impulsions and sexual addictions and impulsive aggression personality disorders (borderline, antisocial, histrionic and narcissistic personality disorders). Impulsivity has a substantial impact on both individuals and society. Impulse control disorders may be conceptualized as a subset of the obsessive-compulsive spectrum. In this article, we examine the genetic and neurobiological aetiology of the

Saccadic Direction Errors are Associated with Impulsive Compulsive Behaviours in Parkinson's Disease Patients.

Fifteen individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD) and impulsive compulsive behaviours (PD+ICB) were compared to 15 PD patients without ICBs (PD-ICB) and 15 healthy controls (HC) on a pro-saccades and an anti-saccades task to assess if ICBs are associated with distinct saccadic abnormalities. PD+ICB made shorter saccades than HC and more direction errors in the anti-saccades task than PD-ICB and HC, suggesting that patients with ICBs have greater difficulty in suppressing automatic saccades towards a given target. Saccadic assessment has the potential to evolve into a marker to guide therapeuti

Psychopathic Traits and Moral Disengagement Interact to Predict Bullying and Cyberbullying Among Adolescents.

The aim of this study was to test a model in which psychopathic traits (callous-unemotional, grandiose-manipulative, and impulsive-irresponsible) and moral disengagement individually and interactively predict two types of bullying (traditional and cyberbullying) in a community sample of adolescents. A total of 765 adolescents (464 girls and 301 boys) completed measures of moral disengagement and psychopathic traits at Time 1, and measures of bullying and cyberbullying at Time 1 and 1 year later, at Time 2. The results showed that callous-unemotional traits predicted both traditional bullying a

Impulse inhibition in people with Internet addiction disorder: electrophysiological evidence from a Go/NoGo study.

We investigated response inhibition in people with Internet addiction disorder (IAD) by recording event-related brain potentials during a Go/NoGo task. Twelve IAD-afflicted and 12 normal university students participated in the study. Results show that the IAD group exhibited lower NoGo-N2 amplitude, higher NoGo-P3 amplitude, and longer NoGo-P3 peak latency than the normal group. The results also suggest that the IAD students had lower activation in the conflict detection stage than the normal group; thus, they had to engage in more cognitive endeavors to complete the inhibition task in the lat

Phenomenology and treatment of behavioural addictions.

Behavioural addictions are characterized by an inability to resist an urge or drive resulting in actions that are harmful to oneself or others. Behavioural addictions share characteristics with substance and alcohol abuse, and in areas such as natural history, phenomenology, and adverse consequences. Behavioural addictions include pathological gambling, kleptomania, pyromania, compulsive buying, compulsive sexual behaviour, Internet addiction, and binge eating disorder. Few studies have examined the efficacy of pharmacological and psychological treatment for the various behavioural addictions,

Hyperkinetic impulse disorder: a developmental defect of motivation.

An integrated, testable, bio-psychological theory which proposes that hyperkinetic impulse disorder (H.I.D.) is determined interactively by polygenically inherited and environmental factors is presented and examined in the light of the literature. The theory holds that H.I.D. is a developmental disorder of intrinsic motivation, characterized by poor appreciation of the contingencies between behavior and environmental events. Characteristics of H.I.D. children, including apparent overactivity, impulsivity, impersistence, inattention, and underachievement in academic and social skills, are accou

Mental health and its consequences in people living with HIV: A network approach.

OBJECTIVES: Psychiatric symptoms occur frequently in people living with human immunodeficiency virus (PLWH), which may affect quality of life, sexual risk behavior, and adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART). Data from large cohorts are limited, and symptoms are often analyzed in isolation. Therefore, we applied a network analysis to assess the interrelatedness of mental health indicators in a large cohort of PLWH. METHODS: We included 1615 PLWH on ART. Participants reported on the severity of depression, anxiety, impulsivity, substance use, quality of life, sexual risk behavior, and ART a

Executive Attentional Dyscontrol as a Core Cognitive and Behavioral Feature of Individuals with Obesity and Cardiovascular Disease: A Cross-Sectional Investigation.

Executive attention as a frontal domain ability that is effective in potentially blocking distracting information, reconciling conflicts among simultaneous attentional demands, and regulating impulsive behavior may be impaired in individuals with obesity and cardiovascular disease (CVD). This study aimed (i) to explore the presence of selected cognitive (global cognitive impairment, sensitivity to interference, and attention) and psychological (quality of life, depression, anxiety, and impulsivity) dimensions and (ii) to examine the interactive relationship between attentional dyscontrol-both …

An fMRI study of cognitive control in problem gamers.

A small proportion of video game players develop uncontrolled gaming behavior. A dysfunctional cognitive control circuit may explain this excessive behavior. Therefore, the current study investigated whether problem gamers are characterized by deficits in various aspects of cognitive control (inhibitory control, error processing, attentional control) by measuring brain activation using functional magnetic resonance imaging during Go-NoGo and Stroop task performance. In addition, both impulsivity and attentional control were measured using self-reports. Participants comprised 18 problem gamers

A novel translational assay of response inhibition and impulsivity: effects of prefrontal cortex lesions, drugs used in ADHD, and serotonin 2C receptor antagonism.

Animal models are making an increasing contribution to our understanding of the psychology and brain mechanisms underlying behavioral inhibition and impulsivity. The aim here was to develop, for the first time, a mouse analog of the stop-signal reaction time task with high translational validity in order to be able to exploit this species in genetic and molecular investigations of impulsive behaviors. Cohorts of mice were trained to nose-poke to presentations of visual stimuli. Control of responding was manipulated by altering the onset of an auditory 'stop-signal' during the go response. The …

Impulse control and related disorders in Parkinson's disease.

Impulse control disorders (ICDs), such as compulsive gambling, buying, sexual behavior, and eating, are a serious and increasingly recognized complication of dopamine replacement therapy in Parkinson's disease (PD). Other impulsive-compulsive behaviors have been linked to dopaminergic medications; these include punding (stereotyped, repetitive, purposeless behaviors) and dopamine dysregulation syndrome (DDS; compulsive medication overuse). ICDs have been most closely related to the use of dopamine agonists (DAs), particularly at higher dosages; in contrast, DDS is primarily associated with sho

Reducing potential risk factors for suicide-related behavior with a group intervention for clients with recurrent suicide-related behavior.

BACKGROUND: This paper reports the results of a pilot study of a 20-week outpatient Psychosocial/Psychoeducational Intervention for Persons with Recurrent Suicide Attempts (PISA) targeting potential risk factors and areas of deficit, including cognitive, affective, and impulsivity known to characterize persons with recurrent suicide-related behavior. METHODS: One hundred sixty-three persons completed the 20-week intervention. Self-report questionnaires related to psychological deficits and risk factors associated with suicide-related behavior were given to participants before and after the in

Hormone levels and personality traits in abusive and suicidal male alcoholics.

This study presents personality and biochemical correlates to abusive and suicidal behavior in 49 male alcoholics. Our hypothesis was that neuroendocrine and personality characteristics reflect a postulated regulatory mechanism that determines the direction of aggression either outward (abusive) or inward (suicidal). Eleven patients (22%) had physically abused someone on one occasion and 15 (31%) constituted a more violent subgroup with repeated instances of abuse. Thirteen (27%) had attempted suicide at least once. There was a significant positive correlation between the number of abusive and

Impulsivity in heroin-dependent individuals: structural and functional abnormalities within frontostriatal circuits.

High levels of impulsivity are a risk factor for the initiation of heroin use and a core behavioral characteristic of heroin dependence. Impulsivity also contributes to the maintenance of drug use and hinders effective therapy. Here we sought to identify neuroimaging markers of impulsivity in heroin-dependent individuals (HDI), with a focus on the nucleus accumbens (NAc), a key region implicated in impulsivity and drug addiction generally. Volume and resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) differences of the bilateral NAc were investigated between 21 HDI and 21 age-, gender-, nicotine-, a

Tourette syndrome-associated psychopathology: roles of comorbid attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Individuals with Tourette syndrome (TS) often display comorbid symptoms of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), as well as externalizing and internalizing behaviors. This study was aimed to examine the impacts of tic severity, ADHD symptoms, and OCD on internalizing (e.g., anxiety) and externalizing (e.g., aggression) psychopathology. METHODS: Using linear regressions, we examined how tics, ADHD, and OCD symptoms predicted the externalization and internalization behaviors measured by the Child Behavior Checklist in a clinical samp

Measuring impulsivity in daily life: A systematic review and recommendations for future research.

Impulsivity is a multidimensional construct that has shown utility in relation to important occupational, functional, and clinical outcomes (e.g., substance use and social functioning) in cross-sectional studies. However, trait assessments of impulsivity have shown less utility in prospectively predicting state instances of such outcomes. Proliferation of mobile technology allows for investigation into psychological phenomena in participants' daily lives, clarifying many momentary and prospective relationships. Studying impulsivity using daily-life methods offers promise in understanding impul

The urge to fill the void: Emptiness, impulsivity, and mentalizing in the daily life of individuals with borderline personality disorder.

Emptiness is central to borderline personality disorder (BPD), significantly impacts quality of life, and is associated with increased impulsivity. Nevertheless, studies of emptiness in daily life are scarce and little is known about factors that may mitigate the emptiness-impulsivity association in BPD, such as mentalizing (Mz), the capacity to understand mental states. The current study examined whether emptiness predicts impulsive behaviors in daily life and whether this association is moderated by disorder or by Mz. The study utilized data from an existing data set (Berenson et al., 2011) …

Impulsivity and reward and punishment sensitivity among patients admitted to a specialized inpatient eating disorder treatment program.

INTRODUCTION: Eating disorders (EDs) are conceptualized as disorders of under- and over-control, with impulsivity reflecting under-control. Extant research indicates that impulsivity and related factors such as reward sensitivity and punishment sensitivity may serve as trait-level transdiagnostic risk and/or maintenance factors in EDs. Findings on impulsivity and reward and punishment sensitivity by diagnosis are mixed and research on the relationship between these factors and ED symptoms, hospital course, and treatment outcomes is limited. METHODS: Participants (N = 228) were patients admitt

Impulse control disorders in Parkinson's disease: A systematic review on risk factors and pathophysiology.

AIM: Purpose of this review is to evaluate the potential risk factors that may predispose to the development of Impulse control disorders (ICDs) in Parkinson's Disease (PD) patients, including the effects of dopaminergic therapy. METHODS: This descriptive review was conducted to identificate risk factors that could cause impulsive control disorders in PD. Studies were found on PubMed (2010-2018), Web Of Science (January 2010-July 2018) and Cochrane (2010-2018) databases. RESULTS: The data suggest that intrinsic and extrinsic factors may be involved in the development of behavioral complicati

Fluoxetine trial in borderline personality disorder.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is defined by many of the symptoms associated with serotonin dysregulation, including affective lability, suicidal behaviors, and impulsive aggression, providing an ideal clinical model for studying the treatment of these serious disorders. The recent development of selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors such as fluoxetine makes it possible to study the role of serotonin in the etiology of affective and behavioral dyscontrol in BPD. In this preliminary medication trial, 5 patients with BPD were treated openly with 20 mg to 40 mg of fluoxetine for 8 weeks
