Has the WIC incentive to formula-feed led to an increase in overweight children?

We explored the relationship between the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) and overweight status in children, with a focus on WIC's provision of infant formula, through secondary analyses and review of existing literature. Because of the complexity involved and the lack of previous research on the combined link between WIC, breast-feeding, and overweight status, we considered evidence for each of these relations separately. Using food-cost data from the WIC's 1996 Participant and Program Characteristics Survey, we found that the state-level average f…

Early Enteral Feeding of the Preterm Infant-Delay until Own Mother's Breastmilk Becomes Available? (Israel, 2012-2017).

AIM: To consider the question of whether to initiate trophic feeds with formula in the absence of own mother's breastmilk or to wait for breastmilk to be available. METHODS: A retrospective study of infants born prior to 32 weeks of gestation during the period 2012-2017 at a single tertiary center in Tel Aviv, Israel. Three TF groups were defined: exclusive breastmilk, mixed, and exclusive formula. Univariate and multivariate analyses were conducted. Logistic regression was used, and adjusted odds ratio and 95% interval were reported. RESULTS: Univariate analysis demonstrated that infants in

The impact of breastfeeding on nasopharyngeal microbial communities in infants.

RATIONALE: Breastfeeding elicits significant protection against respiratory tract infections in infancy. Modulation of respiratory microbiota might be part of the natural mechanisms of protection against respiratory diseases induced by breastfeeding. OBJECTIVES: To study the association between breastfeeding and nasopharyngeal microbial communities, including all cultivable and noncultivable bacteria. METHODS: In this observational study, we analyzed the microbiota of infants that had received exclusive breastfeeding (n = 101) and exclusive formula feeding (n = 101) at age 6 weeks and 6 mont

Sociodemographic and dietary risk factors for natural infant intussusception in the United States.

BACKGROUND: In 1999, a US case-control study demonstrated a strong association between intussusception and a rotavirus vaccine (Rotashield). However, because most (87%) cases were not temporally associated with vaccination, we reanalyzed these data to assess risk factors for intussusception cases unrelated to Rotashield. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Case-patients were infants with intussusception between November 1998 and June 1999. Controls were matched by age and hospital of birth. Sociodemographic and feeding practice data were collected through parent and provider interviews. Conditional logisti

Postdischarge Iron Status in Very Preterm Infants Receiving Prophylactic Iron Supplementation after Birth.

OBJECTIVE: To determine postdischarge iron status and associated factors in very preterm infants. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective cohort study was conducted through a provincial database on all very preterm infants born in Nova Scotia between 2005 and 2018. As a standard of care, all infants received prophylactic iron supplements starting at 2-4 weeks of chronological age and were tested for iron deficiency at 4 or 6 months corrected age. Iron deficiency was defined as serum ferritin <20 g/L at 4 months or <12 g/L at 6 months. Multivariate logistic regression analysis identified factors associa

Early nutrition, essential fatty acid status and visual acuity of term infants at 7 months of age.

OBJECTIVE: In term infants the relationship between visual acuity and dietary fatty acid composition is not consistent, possibly due to confounders, which were mostly neglected in the studies concerned. In the current study, therefore, the influence of the essential fatty acid status and potential confounders on the visual acuity was investigated. DESIGN: The essential fatty acid status was determined at 7 months of age in red blood cell and plasma phospholipids of breastfed and formula-fed infants, born at term. Visual acuity was measured with Teller Acuity Cards. Information about potential

Growth and body composition of preterm infants: influence of nutrient fortification of mother's milk in hospital and breastfeeding post-hospital discharge.

We examined the influence of multi-nutrient fortification of mother's milk (MM + MNF) compared to supplementation with calcium and phosphorus (MM + CaGP) alone in hospital (in a randomized trial), and of breastfeeding (post-MM) compared to formula feeding (post-FF ) after hospital discharge with a descriptive analysis of growth and body composition to 1 y corrected age in preterm infants. Anthropometry, nutrient intakes and whole body bone mineral content, lean and fat mass were determined at four time points in the first year after term corrected age. Body composition was determined with dual

Infant feeding practices of Indian immigrant mothers and their association with sociodemographic factors: An Australia-wide cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about infant feeding practices of Indian immigrant mothers in Australia; this study examined current practices and associated sociodemographic factors. METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey collected infant feeding practices and sociodemographic data from 365 mothers born in India, with a full-term child born in Australia aged 1.5-5 years. Exclusive breastfeeding duration was calculated based on the child's earliest introduction to any non-breastmilk liquids or solids. Multivariable linear and logistic regression assessed the association between sociodemographic

Mode of infant feeding, eating behaviour and anthropometry in infants at 6-months of age born to obese women - a secondary analysis of the UPBEAT trial.

BACKGROUND: Maternal obesity and rapid infant weight gain have been associated with increased risk of obesity in childhood. Breastfeeding is suggested to be protective against childhood obesity, but no previous study has addressed the potential benefit of breastfeeding as a preventive method of childhood obesity amongst obese women. The primary aim of this study was to assess the relationship between mode of feeding and body composition, growth and eating behaviours in 6-month-old infants of obese women who participated in UPBEAT; a multi-centre randomised controlled trial comparing a lifestyl

Fast quantitative fluorescence authentication of milk powder and vanillin by a line-scan hyperspectral system.

We present a fast hyperspectral line-scan fluorescence imaging system to verify the feasibility of quantitative fluorescence authentication of powders. Vanillin, which is restricted for use in milk powder, especially in milk powder for infants, is mixed with milk powder in different mass concentrations (5%, 10%, 30%, 50%, 70%, and 90%). Mixed powders are located on a motorized linear stage. A 405 nm line laser is utilized to excite the fluorescence of the sample. Based on galvo scanning, we can generate a laser line with high spatial resolution and high-intensity density on the samples. An ima

High-Frequency Jet Ventilation in Infants With Congenital Heart Disease.

BACKGROUND: High-frequency jet ventilation (HFJV) is primarily used in neonates but may also have a role in the treatment of infants with congenital heart disease and severe respiratory failure. We hypothesized that HFJV would result in improved gas exchange in these infants. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the records of all pediatric patients with complex congenital heart disease treated HFJV in our pediatric cardiac ICU between 2014 and 2018. Patients in whom HFJV was started while on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) were excluded. We extracted data on demographics, pulmonar

Phosphatidylethanolamine, oleic acid and gondoic acid enhance lutein bioavailability: A hybrid static-dynamic-in vivo study.

Lutein has low stability and limited bioaccessibility in infant formulas. By integrating in vitro (static and dynamic) and in vivo digestion models, oleic acid (OA), gondoic acid (GA) and phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) were identified as agents that raise lutein bioaccessibility by 6-13% under static in vitro conditions. During digestion the additives reduced emulsion droplet size (0.3% PE most effective), inhibited lipid-droplet aggregation and enhanced micellar stability. PE additionally accelerated intestinal free fatty acid release. Dynamic digestion gave higher absolute values but identica…

Hospital Formula Supplementation Postbreastfeeding Initiation, Neighborhood Economy, and Race.

IMPORTANCE: Breastfeeding supports lifelong health, but socioeconomic and racial disparities persist. Biases in hospital formula supplementation practices may be an underlying contributor. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether nonmedically indicated hospital formula supplementation of term-born breastfed newborns is associated with neighborhood socioeconomic status and/or maternal race. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Provincial registry data were used to build a cohort of all live births of term-born singleton infants who initiated breastfeeding in Ontario, Canada, hospitals from April 1, 2015 t

Transmission of lymphocyte responsiveness to schistosomal antigens by breast feeding.

Fifty normal infants were evaluated for the influence of their feeding pattern on the mother-to-child transmission of lymphocyte responsiveness to Schistosoma mansoni antigens. Positive delayed-type hypersensitivity reactions (DTH) were observed in 56% of infants who were breast-fed by infected mothers. Two out of 20 formula-fed infants born to infected mothers had positive DTH. A positive DTH was detected in only one infant out of 15 breast-fed by schistosomiasis-free mothers. These results suggest that cellular hypersensitivity to S. mansoni antigen can - at least in part - be transmitted in

Effects of probiotic and prebiotic on gastrointestinal motility in newborns.

To fortify the biological role of milk formula has been suggested to use probiotics and prebiotics as functional components to mimic the effect of breast milk. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of prebiotic, probiotic added to a standard formula on gastrointestinal motility respect to placebo-formula. Cutaneous electrogastrography (EGG) and ultrasound gastric emptying (GE) were performed in 49 preterm newborns. 17 newborns were exclusively breast-fed; 32 were randomly assigned to receive prebiotic-added formula (0.8 g/dl of a mixture from scGOS and lcFOS, ratio 9:1) (10), a pro

Does Breastfeeding Shape Food Preferences? Links to Obesity.

The first 2 years of life have been recognized as a critical window for obesity prevention efforts. This period is characterized by rapid growth and development and, in a relatively short period of time, a child transitions from a purely milk-based diet to a more varied solid-food diet. Much learning about food and eating occurs during this critical window, and it is well-documented that early feeding and dietary exposures predict later food preferences, eating behaviors, and dietary patterns. The focus of this review will be on the earliest feeding experiences - breast- and formula-feeding -
