BACKGROUND: Immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) is an autoimmune disorder marked by isolated thrombocytopenia. Recent studies suggest a link between Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection and ITP, possibly through molecular mimicry and immune-mediated mechanisms. This study aimed to investigate the association between H. pylori infection and ITP in a Pakistani population where both conditions are prevalent.
METHODS: A case-control study was conducted from May 2022 to June 2024 at a tertiary care hospital in Pakistan. A total of 141 participants were enrolled, including 46 patients with p

West Nile virus (WNV) causes human disease with variable severity. Toll-like receptor 3 (TLR3) is essential for innate immune responses to viral infections, including WNV. The non-synonymous single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs3775291 (C/T), which alters TLR3 function, has been linked to susceptibility to several viral pathogens, but its role in WNV infection is unclear. This study investigates the association between rs3775291 and WNV infection in hospitalized patients. A case-control study was conducted in Cyprus, including 20 hospitalized WNV patients and 22 healthy controls (HCs). Genot

INTRODUCTION: Periodontitis, an infectious inflammatory condition, is a key contributor to sustained systemic inflammation, intricately linked to atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (CVD), the leading cause of death in developed nations. Treating periodontitis with subgingival mechanical instrumentation with or without adjunctive antimicrobials reduces the microbial burden and local inflammation, while also potentially bringing systemic benefits for patients with both periodontitis and CVD. This review examines systemic effects of subgingival instrumentation with or without antimicrobial pr

BACKGROUND: Small fiber neuropathy (SFN) after both COVID-19 infection or vaccination has been reported in sporadic cases, but a detailed description and comparison are missing. We aimed to screen a large cohort of patients complaining of pain and autonomic symptoms after COVID-19 natural infection or vaccination to ascertain the presence of SFN and its correlation with autoimmune diseases.
METHODS: We prospectively recruited for this case-control study 66 patients: 33 developing sensory and autonomic symptoms after a natural COVID-19 infection (P-COVID) and 33 after a mRNA vaccination agains

Tuberculosis (TB) is a global health problem with diverse clinical manifestations. Different cells of the immune response participate in containing the infection, mainly through the development of granulomas. Mast cells (MCs) are hematopoietic cells that participate in the immune response to different pathogens, and in vitro evidence indicates that they can be activated by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb). The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of MCs in a murine TB model. We observed that KitW-sh/W-sh mast cell-deficient mice showed increased bacterial load in the lungs and the spleen

The speed, severity and scale of the COVID-19 pandemic challenged infection prevention and control (IPC) efforts at hospitals worldwide. Dorset County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in Dorchester had an established pandemic plan, which had been developed in response to the swine flu (H1N1) pandemic in 2009. However, the COVID-19 pandemic developed to a level that modern health care had not seen before and it remains the largest challenge for health care to date. This article outlines the experience of a rural district general hospital using digital solutions for infection prevention and control

INTRODUCTION: Exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS) is an established causal risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD) and chronic lung disease. Numerous studies have evaluated the role of tobacco in COVID-19 infection, severity, and mortality but missed the opportunity to assess the role of SHS. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine whether SHS is an independent risk factor for COVID-19 infection, severity, mortality, and other co-morbidities.
METHODOLOGY: Multicentric case-control study was conducted across six states in India. Severe COVID-19 patients were chosen as our study ca

Human infections caused by Brucella (called brucellosis) are among the most common zoonoses worldwide with an estimated 500,000 cases each year. Since chronic Brucella infections are extremely difficult to treat, there is an urgent need for more effective therapeutics. As a facultative intracellular bacterium, Brucella is strictly parasitic in the host cell. Here, we performed proteomic and transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses on Brucella infected patients, mice and cells that provided an extensive "map" of physiological changes in brucellosis patients and characterized the metabolic pathwa

Background and objective Urinary tract infection (UTI) is one of the common causes of febrile illness in young children. Vitamin D influences the levels of endogenous cathelicidin, an antimicrobial peptide, which improves bladder wall immunity and prevents UTIs. In light of this, we conducted this study to determine the association between vitamin D deficiency and UTIs in children and to identify whether vitamin D deficiency is one of the risk factors for UTIs. Materials and methods This was a case-control study of children aged between one to five years. Eighty-two children with the first epi
