Acupuncture for treating alopecia areata: a protocol of systematic review of randomised clinical trials.

INTRODUCTION: Acupuncture is frequently used in dermatology for treating a number of skin disorders. There is no critically appraised evidence of the potential benefits and harm of acupuncture for alopecia areata (AA). This review aims to systematically evaluate the efficacy of acupuncture for the management of AA in randomised clinical trials (RCTs). METHODS AND ANALYSIS: 13 databases will be searched from their inception. These include PubMed, AMED, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library, 6 Korean medical databases (Koreanstudies Information Service System, DBPIA, The Town Society of Science Technolo

Factors influencing primary care access, utilisation and quality of management for patients living with hypertension in West Africa: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Hypertension, one of the most prevalent non-communicable diseases in West Africa, can be well managed with good primary care. This scoping review will explore what is documented in the literature about factors that influence primary care access, utilisation and quality of management for patients living with hypertension in West Africa. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The scoping review will employ the approach described by Arksey and O'Malley (2005) . The approach has five stages: (1) formulating the research questions, (2) identifying relevant studies, (3) selecting eligible studies, (4)

WITHDRAWN: Periconceptional supplementation with folate and/or multivitamins for preventing neural tube defects.

BACKGROUND: Neural tube defects arise during the development of the brain and spinal cord. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this review was to assess the effects of increased consumption of folate or multivitamins on the prevalence of neural tube defects periconceptionally (that is before pregnancy and in the first two months of pregnancy). SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the Cochrane Pregnancy and Childbirth Group trials register. Date of last search: April 2001. SELECTION CRITERIA: Randomised and quasi-randomised trials comparing periconceptional supplementation by multivitamins with placebo, fo

Fatal disseminated adenoviral infection in an adult heart transplant patient.

In heart transplant recipients, infection is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality. In adult heart transplant patients, cytomegalovirus is the most frequently encountered viral pathogen. Conversely, disseminated adenoviral infection is observed mainly in children, where it is predictive of allograft rejection and coronary vasculopathy. The literature contains only a few reports of adenoviral infections in adult heart transplant recipients. Limited information is available concerning the diagnosis and epidemiology of such infections and their relationship to organ rejection, hear

Information on which to base assessments of risk from environments contaminated with anthrax spores.

Although there has been a considerable amount of research conducted into Bacillus anthracis, the causative agent of anthrax, the data are widely disseminated in the scientific literature and are therefore not always easy to assimilate. In view of continuing concern about potential anthrax contamination in environmental materials and sites, this review brings together the currently available information relating to the health hazards from B. anthracis. The relevance of the available information for risk assessment purposes is assessed.

Health misinformation and disinformation: Old narratives, new technologies.

This editorial discusses how health misinformation and disinformation combine long-established narratives with new technologies that substantially increase the speed, reach, personalization, and apparent credibility of misleading content. The novelty of the contemporary information environment lies less in entirely new false narratives than in digital infrastructures that allow misleading content to be created, tailored, disseminated, and monetized at unprecedented scale. Online social media platforms and generative artificial intelligence (AI) have transformed these conditions, enabling misle

Beyond dissemination criteria: lesion-based longitudinal MRI of atypical demyelinating lesions at the boundary of multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Revisions of the McDonald diagnostic criteria have improved the sensitivity of multiple sclerosis (MS) diagnosis by incorporating MRI-based dissemination in space and time. However, some inflammatory demyelinating lesions fulfill dissemination criteria while showing radiological features atypical for MS, even in the absence of anti-AQP4 and anti-MOG antibodies. The long-term radiological course of these atypical idiopathic inflammatory demyelinating lesions (AIIDLs) remains unclear. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 39 Japanese patients with AIIDLs, classified into multiple spo

Bias in Medicine: Lessons Learned and Mitigation Strategies.

Cognitive bias consists of systematic errors in thinking due to human processing limitations or inappropriate mental models. Cognitive bias occurs when intuitive thinking is used to reach conclusions about information rather than analytic (mindful) thinking. Scientific progress is delayed when bias influences the dissemination of new scientific knowledge, as it has with the role of human leucocyte antigen antibodies and antibody-mediated rejection in cardiac transplantation. Mitigating strategies can be successful but involve concerted action by investigators, peer reviewers, and editors to co

Immunomorphology and pathogenesis of echinococcosis. III: Microscopic immunofluorescence studies in experimental alveolar echinococcosis.

By application of immunohistological methods in experimental alveolar echinococcosis, detailed information was obtained on the antigenic properties of each component of the echinococcus cyst. It was established that of the various layers, the capsula germinativa of the parasite cyst possesses the strongest antigenicity regardless of localization and maturity of the cysts. The dissemination of echinococcal antigens within the internal organs of the experimental animals was found to follow the general trends of other infections. Substances obtained from the capsula germinativa appear most suitab

Evaluating online information on temporomandibular disorders: readability, reliability, content and quality: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are a prevalent group of musculoskeletal conditions affecting the temporomandibular joint, associated structures and masticatory muscles. The internet has become a primary source of health information for many patients; however, the readability, reliability, content and quality of online information on TMDs vary widely. A comprehensive synthesis of the characteristics and evaluation methods of such content is currently lacking. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This scoping review will follow the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology and be reported in accor

Transformer-Based Misinformation Detection in Headache Medicine: A BERT Model Approach.

The widespread dissemination of misinformation in headache medicine through digital platforms, including social media and blogs, poses significant challenges for both clinicians and patients. Erroneous information about headache treatments can lead to misinformed clinical decisions, patient anxiety, and suboptimal therapeutic outcomes. To mitigate this issue, we propose a Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT)-based artificial intelligence (AI) model for automated classification of true versus misleading headache-related information. Our model was trained on a domain-sp

Development of a computer-based risk-reduction counseling intervention: acceptability and preferences among low-income patients at an urban sexually transmitted infection clinic.

In preparation for the development of an individually tailored, multimedia, computerized sexually transmitted infection (STI)/HIV-risk reduction intervention software application for use in publicly funded STI clinics, we conducted a waiting-room survey among 583 inner-city patients (67% male; 79% African American; mean age = 30.3) at an STI clinic in Milwaukee, Wisconsin regarding their computer experience and opinions related to a computerized approach to HIV/STI-risk reduction counseling. A substantial minority of respondents indicated they would prefer having either a combined computerized

Coccidioidomycosis in rheumatology patients: incidence and potential risk factors.

Coccidioidomycosis is a potentially serious fungal infection contracted in endemic areas of the desert southwestern United States. Limited information exists about its incidence and clinical course in patients with rheumatic diseases, who may be at higher risk of symptomatic or disseminated coccidioidomycosis because of either the rheumatic disease itself or its treatment. We analyzed the incidence and risk factors for symptomatic and complicated coccidioidomycosis in our academic rheumatology practice in central Arizona. Between January 1, 2000, and June 30, 2006, coccidioidomycosis was diagn

EvolvRehab-MoveWell telerehabilitation for stroke survivors: study protocol for a feasibility with embedded initial proof-of-concept study.

INTRODUCTION: Stroke is a leading cause of disability throughout the world. Unilateral upper limb impairment is common in people who have had a stroke. As a result of impaired upper limb function, people who have had a stroke often employ abnormal 'compensatory' movements. In the short term, these compensatory movements allow the individual to complete tasks, though long-term movement in this manner can lead to limitations. Telerehabilitation offers the provision of rehabilitation services to patients at a remote location using information and communication technologies. 'EvolvRehab' is one su
