Digital engagement and knowledge about zoonoses among dog and cat owners in Rio de Janeiro: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The One Health approach highlights the interconnectedness between human, animal, and environmental health, reinforcing the importance of public awareness in preventing zoonoses, which remain major sources of emerging infectious diseases. Given the increasing popularity of pet ownership and the widespread use of mobile phones for accessing information, understanding how pet owners engage with digital health content is essential for guiding effective educational strategies. This study assessed the profile of dog and cat owners in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; their knowledge about zoonoses

Ecological vaccination: A strategy to prevent zoonotic spillover from bats.

Bats serve as critical reservoirs of zoonotic pathogens but also play essential ecological roles. To mitigate spillover risks without harming bat populations, we developed a multiroute vaccination strategy using recombinant vesicular stomatitis virus (rVSV)-based vaccines. Vaccine-carrying mosquitoes delivered rVSV-based rabies and Nipah vaccines, conferring protection in rodent and bat models. Under simulated natural conditions, cohabitation with vaccine-carrying mosquitoes elicited strong immune responses in bats, supporting feasibility beyond laboratory settings. As a complementary approach

Exploring the enigma of low prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder in India.

INTRODUCTION: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a chronic psychiatric condition associated with significant distress and dysfunction. While worldwide estimates of prevalence range from 3.9% to 24%, little research has been conducted to identify the prevalence of PTSD in the general population of India. This study analyzes data from the National Mental Health Survey 2015-2016, a comprehensive epidemiological study of mental health disorders in India, to explore the unique characteristics and prevalence of PTSD in the Indian population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The National Mental Health S

Temperament, parenting, mental disorders, life stressors and help-seeking behavior of Asian adolescent suicide attempters: A case control study.

PURPOSE: The need to elucidate risk factors for adolescent suicide is urgent, as suicide consistently ranks among the top causes of death globally. Understanding suicide risk factors could inform more effective interventions. Previous studies have identified certain risk factors associated with suicide, but there is a paucity of research among adolescent and multi-ethnic Asian populations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This case-control study sampled 13-to-19-year-old Asian adolescents who had attempted suicide (N = 60) and controls (N = 58) matched by age, ethnicity and gender at group-level (73.7%

Transnational health protection strategies and other health-seeking behavior among undocumented and indigenous dairy workers in a rural new immigrant destination.

Latin American immigrants in new immigrant destinations (NIDs) experience numerous barriers that negatively impact their access to healthcare. Yet the wide range of health-seeking behaviors deployed in response to these barriers-particularly among those who are undocumented and indigenous-are not well understood. Further, studies of immigrant health in NIDs tend to take place in those locations, rather than using a multi-sited design. Building on NID scholarship, the transnational social protection literature, and work on structural vulnerability, this study uses a multi-sited research design

Monosynaptic Retrograde Tracing From Prelimbic Neuron Subpopulations Projecting to Either Nucleus Accumbens Core or Rostromedial Tegmental Nucleus.

The prelimbic (PL) region of the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) has been implicated in both driving and suppressing motivated behaviors, including cocaine-seeking in rats. These seemingly opposing functions may be mediated by different efferent targets of PL projections, such as the nucleus accumbens (NAc) core and rostromedial tegmental nucleus (RMTg), which have contrasting roles in reward-seeking behaviors. We sought to characterize the anatomical connectivity differences between PL neurons projecting to NAc core and RMTg. We used conventional retrograde tracers to reveal distinct subpopul

Intrinsic and extrinsic factors associated with sputum characteristics of presumed tuberculosis patients.

BACKGROUND: Sputum remains the most preferred specimen for detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis due to its non-invasive method of production. Good quality sputum specimen is essential for accurate diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB). It is therefore imperative to assess factors that are related to the production of sputum that is of the best quality. OBJECTIVE: We assessed the intrinsic and extrinsic characteristics of presumed tuberculosis patients and the quality of sputum they produced. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study in which consenting enrolled presumed tuberculosis p

Health-plan and employer-based wellness programs to reduce diabetes risk: The Kaiser Permanente Northern California NEXT-D Study.

INTRODUCTION: Nearly 5 million people are treated for skin cancer each year in the United States. Agricultural and construction workers (ACWs) may be at increased risk for skin cancer because of high levels of ultraviolet radiation exposure from the sun. This is the first study that uses nationally representative data to assess sun-protection behaviors among ACWs. METHODS: We analyzed data from the 2015 National Health Interview Survey Cancer Control Supplement to examine the prevalence of sun-protection behaviors among ACWs. We calculated national, weighted, self-reported prevalence estimate

Dating Violence among Undergraduate Medical Students at a Public University in Mexico City: An Exploratory Study.

Gender-based violence (GBV) and cyber-aggression are growing problems in Mexico, but there is a dearth of information on their associated risks. We aimed to determine the prevalence of dating violence (DV) and cyber-aggression in a public campus and compared students' acceptability of abusive DV based on their sex and sexual orientation. We employed a cross-sectional design to survey 964 first-year medical students attending a public university. We analyzed who found "acceptable" abusive behaviors from a dating partner and carried out descriptive analyses of sample characteristics by sex. We i

MicroRNAs regulate synaptic plasticity underlying drug addiction.

Chronic use of drugs of abuse results in neurochemical, morphological and behavioral plasticity that underlies the emergence of compulsive drug seeking and vulnerability to relapse during periods of attempted abstinence. Identifying and reversing addiction-relevant plasticity is seen as a potential point of pharmacotherapeutic intervention in drug-addicted individuals. Despite considerable advances in our understanding of the actions of drugs of abuse in the brain, this information has thus far yielded few novel treatment options addicted individuals. MicroRNAs are small noncoding RNAs that ca

Self-efficacy as a mediator between dementia knowledge and screening intention among American Indian adults.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: While early detection of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) can help delay progression and improve outcomes, limited research is available on dementia-related health behavior, such as screening intention among American Indian/Alaska Native communities. Guided by the Theory of Reasoned Action, the Theory of Planned Behavior, and the Health Belief Model, this study examines whether self-efficacy mediates the association between dementia knowledge and intention to seek ADRD screening among American Indian adults. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Using a commu

Virtual avatars as a new tool for human immunodeficiency virus prevention among men who have sex with men: a narrative review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) continues to affect sexual and gender minorities, predominantly men who have sex with men (MSM). Stigma, medical mistrust, and apprehension towards discussing sexual health with one's medical provider are significant barriers in seeking or accessing preventive services. Those obstacles could be surpassed through novel digital and electronic health interventions, specifically with virtual avatar technology. Avatars are digital self-representative agents that are controlled with an interactive electronic device. Avatars allow for virtu
