Several studies have tested the effectiveness of telephone counseling as a smoking cessation intervention, but few have addressed its application with the special population of smokers who are also problem drinkers or recovering alcoholics. Recent analyses of children in Belarus and the Ukraine are the first to document large numbers of excess thyroid cancer cases only 4 years after exposure to radiation. In Connecticut (USA), a thyroid cancer increase of a much smaller magnitude occurred in 1990-93, 4-7 years after the Chernobyl accident, for both children and adults. Monoamniotic twins are uncommon but are at high risk (reportedly 50%) for perinatal death, commonly from cord accidents. Until recently the diagnosis of monoamniotic twinning was seldom made before delivery, but modern ultrasound technology permits diagnosis during prenatal care, creating a management dilemma. Pilus-mediated adherence is a virulence attribute of Moraxella bovis. Several pilus types have been shown to exist among strains of this bacterium, but correlation between pilus type and specific field cases of the disease has not been done. Causes of death were studied in a cohort of 200 schizophrenic, 100 manic, and 225 depressive patients who were followed in a historical prospective study. These patients were admitted between 1934 and 1944 and were studied 30 to 40 years later. Salmonella enterica serotype I 4,[5],12:i:- has been increasingly isolated from swine. However, its pathogenic potential is not well characterized. Analysis of swine cases confirmed a strong positive association between isolation of I 4,[5],12:i:- and lesions of enteric salmonellosis and suggested a similar pathogenic potential as that for Salmonella Typhimurium.

We investigated the plausibility of aerosol transmission of H5N2 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) virus during the 2015 spring outbreaks that occurred in the U.S. midwest. Air samples were collected inside and outside of infected turkey and layer facilities. Despite numerous cases of human infection with Streptococcus suis worldwide, human disease is rarely diagnosed in North America. We studied 73 swine-exposed and 67 non-swine-exposed US adults for antibodies to S. suis serotype 2. Although psychotropic medications are commonly used with older adults who have mental retardation, patterns of medication use for this group are not easily determined. Our objective was to explore relations between prescribed psychoactive treatments and rated behavioral difficulties. Because many employees re-injure themselves upon returning to the workplace after rehabilitation, it became apparent (especially in the era of rising workmans compensation costs) that some employees' jobs needed to be modified. Middle-ear findings in two groups with cleft lips and palate of the early childhood have been compared with each other. In 126 CLAP children of the Departments for Maxillofacial Surgery/ENT of the University of Hamburg tympanic cavity wash tubes (grommets) were inserted (26%) or myringotomy was done (10%) after persistence of middle ear effusions for more than 3 months. We reviewed emergency department records that spanned a period of 5 years at seven rural hospitals to provide more specific data concerning pediatric resuscitation. The purpose was to plan better for preventive programs and to help rural health care providers prepare better for these difficult patients. In Augsut 1974, 31 of 45 cases of Shigella sonnei infection in Dubuque, Iowa, were traced to swimming in an 8-km stretch of the Mississippi River. Comparison of the first case in each affected family with neighborhood controls showed a significant correlation between swimming and illness (P less than .0001).
