[A case of primary pulmonary leiomyosarcoma showing rapid growth and fatal outcome].

An 80-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with a 4.0 x 2.0 cm shadow accompanied by calcification, found on chest CT scans on a health check. The shadow was located in the left lower lobe (S10), and was attached to the pleura. A transbronchial biopsy did not yield a definitive diagnosis. A percutaneous needle biopsy yielded a diagnosis of leiomyosarcoma. A general examination did not show any metastatic lesions in other areas. However, the tumor grew rapidly, with pleural effusion, and therefore he was treated only by palliative therapy. He died from respiratory failure 90 days after ons…

Metastatic leiomyosarcoma in the oral cavity: case report with protein expression profiles.

Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) is a relatively uncommon malignant tumour derived from smooth muscle cells that rapidly metastasizes to distant regions. It rarely reaches oral tissues in which smooth muscle tissues are absent. We report the case of a 56-year-old woman who presented with LMS in the maxilla that had metastasized from a primary tumour in her uterus, received a total hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy 9 months earlier. To reveal the poor prognosis of metastatic LMS, a total of 26 antibodies against different factors related to the proliferation, apoptosis, necrosis, and angiog…

Pancreatic and multiorgan resection with inferior vena cava reconstruction for retroperitoneal leiomyosarcoma.

BACKGROUND: Inferior vena cava (IVC) leiomyosarcoma is a rare tumor of smooth muscle origin. It is often large by the time of diagnosis and may involve adjacent organs. A margin-free resection may be curative, but the resection must involve the tumor en bloc with the affected segment of vena cava and locally involved organs. IVC resection often requires vascular reconstruction, which can be done with prosthetic graft. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a 39-year-old man with an IVC leiomyosarcoma that involved the adrenal gland, distal pancreas, and blood supply to the spleen and left kidney. Tum…

Vulvar leiomyosarcoma in Bartholin's gland area: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Malignant tumours of the vulvar soft tissue are very uncommon. When localized in the Bartholin's gland area these tumours can be mistaken for benign lesions, leading to a delayed diagnosis. CASE: A 52-year-old woman presenting with a vulvar nodule, which was diagnosed as a Bartholin's gland cyst and was referred to the hospital for surgical excision of the lesion. Pathologist report informed of a 6 cm diameter leiomyosarcoma of the vulva with compromised resection margins; extension studies did not suggest any additional lesions and radical hemivulvectomy with ipsilateral inguinal…

Oesophageal leiomyosarcoma in dogs: surgical management and clinical outcome of four cases.

Oesophageal leiomyosarcoma has yet to be reported in dogs. This retrospective case series describes the case management and clinical outcome of four dogs with oesophageal leiomyosarcoma treated by marginal excision alone. Histological features used to determine tumour grade included capsular invasion, percent necrosis, pleomorphism and mitotic rate. All tumours were designated grade 1 leiomyosarcoma. Excision of all grossly evident tumour tissue was achieved in two of the four cases; however, histopathologic evaluation showed tumour cells at the surgical margins in one of these two cases. Two …

Primary gingival leiomyosarcoma. A clinicopathological study of 1 case with prolonged survival.

BACKGROUND: Leiomyosarcoma is a relatively uncommon mesenchymal tumor that exhibits smooth-muscle differentiation. Only 3 to 10% of leiomyosarcomas arise in the head and neck, the nose and paranasal sinuses, skin and subcutaneous tissue and cervical esophagus being the most common localizations. Most leiomyosarcomas involving the oral tissues primarily affect the maxillary sinus, the maxillary or mandibular bone. A review of the English-language literature since 1908 revealed 30 reported cases of primary leiomyosarcoma of the oral mucosa and soft tissues. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We report on a …

[Imaging evaluation and interventional therapy of hepatic metastases from small intestinal leiomyosarcoma].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the imaging appearances and the short-term curative effect of hepatic metastases from small intestine leiomyosarcoma treated by interventional methods. METHODS: Seven cases with 46 lesions of hepatic metastases from small intestinal leiomyosarcoma were analyzed retrospectively. The diameters of the metastases were from 2 cm to 18 cm. CT triphasic scan and hepatoarterial angiography were performed in all cases. The interventional therapy methods included transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) (all 7 cases), percutaneous left subclavian artery port-catheter syste…

[Uterine leiomyosarcoma which spread through the vena cava to the pulmonary artery].

We describe a case of uterine leiomyosarcoma with four elongations that, through the vena cava, reached the pulmonary artery, left atrium, and right renal artery respectively. Clinical features suggested congenital pulmonary artery stenosis with pulmonary emboli. Clinical diagnosis was not made in spite of angiography and radionuclide scans. We review the literature on the subject. We also discuss the amenability of surgical correction as well as the mechanisms of the intravenous growth of this type of tumor.

Two faces of malignancy in one prostate: A rare coexistence of adenocarcinoma and leiomyosarcoma.

Adenocarcinoma is the predominant malignant tumor of the prostate, while primary prostatic leiomyosarcoma is an exceptionally rare and highly aggressive mesenchymal neoplasm. The synchronous presence of both entities is extremely uncommon and has been, to our knowledge, described in only a few cases. We describe a 50-year-old man with persistent lower urinary tract symptoms and mildly elevated prostate-specific antigen. Imaging demonstrated two distinct intraglandular lesions. Histopathology and immunohistochemistry confirmed acinar adenocarcinoma and leiomyosarcoma in separate foci. Laparosco…

Pleomorphic Leiomyosarcoma of the Nasopharynx and Oropharynx Presenting as a Benign-Appearing Pedunculated Mass.

Pleomorphic leiomyosarcoma is a rare malignant mesenchymal tumor, particularly in the head and neck region. The authors report a case of pleomorphic leiomyosarcoma involving the nasopharynx and oropharynx that presented as a well-circumscribed, benign-appearing pedunculated mass without overt invasive features on imaging. Despite its indolent clinical and radiologic appearance, histopathologic examination revealed a high-grade malignancy. The patient underwent surgical excision, and adjuvant radiotherapy was initiated but discontinued early because of treatment intolerance. The patient remains…

Primary pulmonary leiomyosarcoma in a patient with disseminated pulmonary tuberculosis and constrictive pericarditis.

Primary pulmonary leiomyosarcoma (PPL) is an exceedingly rare malignancy, accounting for fewer than 0.5% of all lung tumours. Its occurrence alongside disseminated tuberculosis (TB) complicated by constrictive pericarditis has not previously been described. We report a 66-year-old HIV-negative male from rural South Africa presenting with progressive dyspnoea, found to have a right upper lobe nodule that enlarged despite adequate anti-TB therapy. Computed tomography (CT)-guided biopsy demonstrated spindle cell morphology. Cardiac MRI and right and left heart catheterisation confirmed constricti…

A Review of Proteomic Studies in Uterine Leiomyosarcoma: Biomarkers, Pathways, and Clinical Potential.

Uterine leiomyosarcoma (uLMS) is a rare but highly aggressive mesenchymal malignancy of smooth-muscle origin that represents a significant therapeutic challenge due to its poor prognosis and limited treatment options. Despite advances in molecular characterization, diagnosis remains difficult, and systemic therapies have shown limited success, contributing to a high recurrence rate and poor survival. Recent proteomic investigations have provided new insights into uLMS biology by exploring the global protein expression patterns that define malignant transformation and progression. Using high-re…

Recognizing an IVC leiomyosarcoma: CT imaging hallmarks and the utility of 3D rendering.

Inferior vena cava (IVC) leiomyosarcoma is a rare and aggressive malignancy arising from smooth muscle cells of the IVC wall, accounting for less than 1 in 100,000 adult malignancies. It carries a poor prognosis, with high recurrence rates and 5-year disease-free survival reported as low as 6%. Clinical presentation is often vague, including abdominal or back pain, lower extremity edema, and weight loss, making imaging pivotal for diagnosis. Contrast-enhanced CT (CECT) is the modality of choice, but diagnosis remains challenging due to overlap with more common pathologies such as renal cell ca…

Misdiagnosed Uterine Leiomyosarcoma with Metastasis to the Left Condylar Neck - A Case Report.

RATIONALE: This is a case of metastatic leiomyosarcoma (LMS) lesion of the condyle arising from a primary LMS of the uterus in a 43-year-old woman. PATIENT CONCERN: The patient presented an uncommon clinical manifestation not justified by the presence of a leiomyoma. DIAGNOSIS: The diagnostic process revealed that the patient was affected by uterine LMS, previously misdiagnosed as a leiomyoma, with a secondary metastasis of the left temporomandibular joint condyle. TREATMENT: Surgery was proposed with total excision of the lesion and parotidectomy, together with radiotherapy and chemotherap…

Leiomyosarcoma of the Bone: A Case Report on the Critical Role of Biomarkers in Differential Diagnosis.

Leiomyosarcoma of the bone (LMSB) is a rare type of sarcoma characterized by smooth muscle differentiation arising within the bone. We present the case of a 38-year-old female patient diagnosed with LMSB in the left distal femur. Histological examination revealed spindle-shaped and pleomorphic cells, with no evidence of cartilage or bone matrix formation. Immunohistochemical analysis demonstrated the tumor cell were positive for Smooth Muscle Actin, Desmin, and H-caldesmon. The integration of clinical presentation, imaging, morphological, and immunohistochemical findings confirmed the diagnosi…

Successful clinical approach to the metastatic uterine leiomyosarcoma to the epicardium-a case report.

BACKGROUND: Uterine leiomyosarcoma is a rare and aggressive tumour with a poor prognosis. Its metastases to the heart are even rarer, especially to the epicardium. The majority of reported cardiac metastases of uterine leiomyosarcoma were in the cardiac chambers or intramyocardial. Surgical resection of the uterine leiomyosarcoma in the early stages is the only definitive treatment for this disease. However, in the cases of cardiac metastasis, surgery is recommended only in emergencies and patients with expected beneficial outcomes. CASE PRESENTATION: Our patient was a 49-year-old female refe…

Surgical and oncologic approach to leiomyosarcoma of the inferior vena cava: A case report.

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: LMS of IVC needs a multidisciplinary approach. Surgical excision with free margin is the cornerstone of management. Upon case-by-case selection, adjuvant chemotherapy may play a role in better oncologic outcome. ABSTRACT: Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) of the inferior vena cava (IVC) is a rare form of mesenchymal origin malignancy with less than 400 cases reported to date. Surgery is the mainstay of management but it requires vast experience in vascular and visceral surgery to attain a free tumor margin. Subsequent adjuvant treatment with chemotherapy and radiation remains as an a…

[A Case of Resection of Leiomyosarcoma Suspected to Originate from the Right Ovarian Vein].

We present a 58-year-old female patient who underwent resection of a leiomyosarcoma arising from the right ovarian vein. She was referred to our hospital because of lower abdominal pain that had been present for 1 month prior to the visit. Ultrasound examination revealed a well-defined, smooth, lobulated, highly vascular mass(57 mm)adjacent to the distal portion of the duodenum. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography revealed the contrast enhancement mass (60 mm)located surround the right ovarian vein. In abdominal magnetic resonance image examination, the mass exhibited isointense signal on T1…
