Neural effects of cognitive-behavioural therapy on dysfunctional attitudes in depression.

BACKGROUND: Dysfunctional attitudes are a feature of depression that has been correlated with receptor binding abnormalities in limbic and cortical regions. We sought to investigate the functional neuroanatomy of dysfunctional attitudes in major depressive disorder (MDD) and the effects of treatment with cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT). METHOD: Participants were 16 patients with unipolar depression in an acute depressive episode (mean age 40.0 years) and 16 matched healthy controls (mean age 39.9 years). Patients were medication free and received a course of treatment with CBT. All partic

Autism spectrum disorder as early neurodevelopmental disorder: evidence from the brain imaging abnormalities in 2-3 years old toddlers.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition that occurs within the first 3 years of life, which is marked by so … actional anisotropy value was also observed in the corpus callosum, posterior cingulate cortex, and limbic lobes of ASD. The converging findings of structural and white matter abnormalities in ASD suggest that alterations in neural-anatomy of different brain regions may be involved in behavioral and cognitive deficits associated with ASD, especially in an ear …

Parkinson's disease showing progressive conduction aphasia.

Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) may develop progressive dementia late in their clinical course. Dementia in PD is mostly related to neuropathological findings of extensive Lewy bodies (LBs), with or without the coexistence of Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology. Aphasia has been reported in patients with LB diseases with AD pathology; however, there have been no reports of typical PD patients developing progressive aphasia during their clinical course. We describe a female PD patient who later developed progressive conduction aphasia characterized by phonemic paraphasia and disturbance i

Cetacean brain evolution: Dwarf sperm whale (Kogia sima) and common dolphin (Delphinus delphis) - An investigation with high-resolution 3D MRI.

This study compares a whole brain of the dwarf sperm whale (Kogia sima) with that of a common dolphin (Delphinus delphis) using high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The Kogia brain was scanned with a Siemens Trio Magnetic Resonance scanner in the three main planes. As in the common dolphin and other marine odontocetes, the brain of the dwarf sperm whale is large, with the telencephalic hemispheres remarkably dominating the brain stem. The neocortex is voluminous and the cortical grey matter thin but expansive and densely convoluted. The corpus callosum is thin and the anterior com

Effects of antidepressant treatment with rTMS and fluoxetine on brain perfusion in PD.

BACKGROUND: Although depression is highly prevalent in Parkinson disease (PD), little is known about the neural correlates associated with depression and antidepressant treatment in PD. OBJECTIVE: To examine the effects of fluoxetine and repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) on regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) using SPECT in patients with PD and depression. METHODS: Twenty-six patients were enrolled into two groups: One received active rTMS and placebo medication and the other sham rTMS and fluoxetine 20 mg/day. Brain SPECT was performed at baseline and after 2 and 8 weeks.

Response of carbamzepine in bipolar disorder: kindlers versus non-kindlers.

Based on carbamazepine's hypothesized ability to stabilize temporal lobe seizures and behavioral disorders and its ability to inhibit limbic system excitability in models such as kindling, we undertook this study with the aims of finding out the response of carbamazepine in kindler and non kindler groups and to see the relationship of socio-demographic and clinical variables in kindler and non-kindler bipolar mood disorder with response to carbamazepine. Simple random sampling was done and patients (over a period of one and a half year) between 18-50 years who had a diagnosis of Bipolar Affect

Infection of SCID mice with Montana Myotis leukoencephalitis virus as a model for flavivirus encephalitis.

We have established a convenient animal model for flavivirus encephalitis using Montana Myotis leukoencephalitis virus (MMLV), a bat flavivirus. This virus has the same genomic organization, and contains the same conserved motifs in genes that encode potential antiviral targets, as flaviviruses that cause disease in man (N. Charlier et al., accompanying paper), and has a similar particle size (approximately 40 nm). MMLV replicates well in Vero cells and appears to be equally as sensitive as yellow fever virus and dengue fever virus to a selection of experimental antiviral agents. Cells infecte

Persistence and atrophy of septal/diagonal band neurons expressing the p75 neurotrophin receptor in pilocarpine-induced chronic epilepsy in the rat.

Systemic administration of pilocarpine, which results in status epilepticus followed by recurrent seizures in rats, is a widely used experimental model of chronic limbic epilepsy. Marked structural alterations have been documented in pilocarpine-induced epilepsy, and these include cell loss in the hippocampus and other brain areas, and sprouting of mossy and cholinergic fibers in the hippocampus. Evidence is accumulating that neurotrophins and neurotrophin receptors are involved in the cascade of these events. Two and 4 months after pilocarpine-induced epilepsy, neurons containing the 75-kDa l

[Neuropsychological description of memory impairment following cortical and subcortical brain injuries].

This article, basing on experimental analysis and clinical observations, focuses on the role of subcortical structures in memory processes. It explained terminological problems and defined terms of memory: immediate, delayed, recent, remote, declarative and procedural. The present article pointed out functional hemispheric specialization as a predicator of material-specific forms of memory. Neuroanatomical basis was revealed, especially limbic system with its connections to prefrontal, cortical and brain stem regions. Amnesic Korsakoff and Wernicke syndromes, transient global amnesia, memory l

Genetic resistance to kindling associated with alterations in circuit function.

How a seizure spreads from a focal onset zone to other regions of the brain is not well understood, and animal studies suggest that there is a genetic influence. To understand how genetic factors may influence seizure spread, we examined whether the kindling resistance of WAG/Rij rats, which are slow to develop kindled motor seizures, is independent of the site of seizure induction and thus a global phenomenon, or whether it is circuit specific. We compared the kindling rates (number of stimulations to induce kindled motor seizures) of WAG/Rij rats to the rates of kindling in Sprague Dawley ra

Distinct connectivity patterns in human medial parietal cortices: Evidence from standardized connectivity map using cortico-cortical evoked potential.

The medial parietal cortices are components of the default mode network (DMN), which are active in the resting state. The medial parietal cortices include the precuneus and the dorsal posterior cingulate cortex (dPCC). Few studies have mentioned differences in the connectivity in the medial parietal cortices, and these differences have not yet been precisely elucidated. Electrophysiological connectivity is essential for understanding cortical function or functional differences. Since little is known about electrophysiological connections from the medial parietal cortices in humans, we evaluate

Effects of sensitivity to life stress on uncinate fasciculus segments in early adolescence.

Previous research suggests that exposure to early life stress (ELS) affects the structural integrity of the uncinate fasciculus (UF), a frontolimbic white matter tract that undergoes protracted development throughout adolescence. Adolescence is an important transitional period characterized by the emergence of internalizing psychopathology such as anxiety, particularly in individuals with high levels of stress sensitivity. We examined the relations among sensitivity to ELS, structural integrity of the UF, and anxiety symptoms in 104 early adolescents. We conducted structured interviews to asse

Common limbic and frontal-striatal disturbances in patients with obsessive compulsive disorder, panic disorder and hypochondriasis.

BACKGROUND: Direct comparisons of brain function between obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and other anxiety or OCD spectrum disorders are rare. This study aimed to investigate the specificity of altered frontal-striatal and limbic activations during planning in OCD, a prototypical anxiety disorder (panic disorder) and a putative OCD spectrum disorder (hypochondriasis). METHOD: The Tower of London task, a 'frontal-striatal' task, was used during functional magnetic resonance imaging measurements in 50 unmedicated patients, diagnosed with OCD (n=22), panic disorder (n=14) or hypochondriasis

Gray matter covariations and core symptoms of autism: the EU-AIMS Longitudinal European Autism Project.

BACKGROUND: Voxel-based morphometry (VBM) studies in autism spectrum disorder (autism) have yielded diverging results. This might partly be attributed to structural alterations being associating with the combined influence of several regions rather than with a single region. Further, these structural covariation differences may relate to continuous measures of autism rather than with categorical case-control contrasts. The current study aimed to identify structural covariation alterations in autism, and assessed canonical correlations between brain covariation patterns and core autism symptoms

Right-to-left shunt-associated brain functional changes in migraine: evidences from a resting-state FMRI study.

BACKGROUND: Migraine, a neurological condition perpetually under investigation, remains shrouded in mystery regarding its underlying causes. While a potential link to Right-to-Left Shunt (RLS) has been postulated, the exact nature of this association remains elusive, necessitating further exploration. METHODS: The amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF), fractional ALFF (fALFF), regional homogeneity (ReHo) and functional connectivity (FC) were employed to investigate functional segregation and functional integration across distinct brain regions. Graph theory-based network analysis was

Imaging biomarkers in antibody-mediated autoimmune encephalitis.

BACKGROUND: Imaging, particularly multimodal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), serves as an essential auxiliary examination for diagnosing autoimmune encephalitis (AE). The diversity of autoantibodies complicates the imaging presentation of AE, exhibiting both common and individual features across different subtypes of AE. Currently, there is a lack of comprehensive studies on the imaging features of different subtypes of AE. The study aimed to explore imaging biomarkers for AE mediated by various subtypes of antibodies and clarify their significance in disease severity, treatment response, an

Motor and Limbic System Contribution to Emotional Laughter across the Lifespan.

Laughter is a universal human behavior generated by the cooperation of different systems toward the construction of an expressive vocal pattern. Given the sensitivity of neuroimaging techniques to movements, the neural mechanisms underlying laughter expression remain unclear. Herein, we characterized the neural correlates of emotional laughter using the onsets and the duration of laughter bursts to inform functional magnetic resonance imaging. Laughter-related blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) increases involved both the motor (motor cortex, supplementary motor area, frontal operculum) and t

Psychiatric comorbidity in temporal DNET and improvement after surgery.

BACKGROUND: "Alien tissue" may be responsible for a higher frequency of psychiatric disorders in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). Also, ganglioglioma and dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumors (DNET) could represent a risk-factor for the development of post-surgical psychoses. Classically, severe psychiatric disorders contra-indicate epilepsy surgery. OBJECTIVES: Assessment of inter-ictal psychiatric disorders in 10 consecutive patients with temporal DNET, before and after epilepsy surgery with a minimum of a 2-year follow-up evaluation. METHODS: DNETs were confirmed on histologi

Quantitative evaluation of neurotrophin and trk mRNA expression in visual and limbic areas along the occipito-temporo-hippocampal pathway in adult macaque monkeys.

The neurotrophins have been implicated in shaping and remodeling the connectivity of neural circuits. To explore the role of neurotrophins and their receptors, Trks, in cortical neural circuits of adult macaque monkeys, we determined mRNA expression levels of neurotrophins and Trk receptors in various visual and limbic areas along the occipito-temporo-hippocampal pathway by using a quantitative reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction technique. The expression level of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) mRNA was lowest in the primary visual cortex (V1), moderate in the temporal vi
