The concept of presurgical nasoalveolar moulding (PNM) was developed to improve the aesthetic result of surgically corrected cleft lip. This paper presents the method of fabrication of PNM appliance and the case of a 30-day-old neonate with unilateral cleft lip in whom nasal moulding was performed. Treatment was initiated at 30 days and continued for 60 days after which the surgical correction of cleft lip was performed. Significant improvement in aesthetics and symmetry of the nose was achieved at the end of the treatment.

INTRODUCTION: This study aims to review the results of hearing screens in newborns with cleft deformities.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective audit of 123 newborns with cleft deformities, born between 1 April 2002 and 1 December 2008, was conducted. Data on the results of universal newborn hearing screens (UNHS) and high-risk hearing screens, age at diagnosis, severity/type of hearing loss and mode of intervention were obtained from a prospectively maintained hearing database.
RESULTS: Thirty-one of 123 newborns (25.2%) failed the first automated auditory brainstem response (AABR). Seven

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the audiologic characteristics of the children with cleft lip and/or palate.
METHOD: Sixty-two children with cleft lip/palate were enrolled in the study. Tympanometry, DPOAE, ABR were tested in all the chidren.
RESULT: Regarding the ABR threshold as the diagnostic criteria, 51 (41.13%) ears had hearing loss, mainly moderate. Sixty-three (59.43%) ears had abnormal tympanometry, which meant the disorder function of the middle ear. Twenty-six (56.52%) ears didn't pass the DPOAE.
CONCLUSION: The proportion of the hearingloss in the children with cleft lip/palate was la…

AIM: Patients affected by unilateral facial palsy often show partial or complete atrophy of the orbicularis oris. The lower hemilip on the affected side may have partial functional recover due to direct reinnervation stemming from the unaffected side. This explains why atrophy of the paralysed side is sometimes limited. Negative esthetic and functional findings include partial invisibility of the vermillion border due to lip inversion resulting from muscle flaccidity, asymmetry of the lower lip, oral incompetence, and speech and nutrition impairments of variable degree. In this study, we used …

OBJECTIVE: To better understand how individuals with cleft lip and palate (CLP) perceive and experience their treatment process and how these perceptions and experiences change over the life course.
DESIGN: Qualitative in-depth semistructured interviews with 11 adults with nonsyndromal complete CLP.
PARTICIPANTS/SETTING: Individuals from three Canadian cities were recruited by convenience and theoretical sampling through AboutFace International. The number of participants was determined by the principle of theoretical saturation.
RESULTS: The experience of individuals with CLP through the t…

OBJECTIVE: Children's voices are being increasingly acknowledged in health care research. The aim of this study was to explore children's and young people's perspectives of being born with a cleft lip and/or palate.
DESIGN: The research took a qualitative approach that consisted of two interviews with each child, drawing on child-centered methodologies and techniques. The initial interview focused on children's general life stories, and these often encompassed a discussion about cleft lip and/or palate. The follow-up interview explored specific aspects of the condition and related treatment.

Two unrelated girls with craniosynostosis and bilateral cleft lip and palate who also had developmental delay and umbilical herniae are presented. We propose that these patients have the same condition, and that their combination of features may constitute a new syndrome. Management of the patients is discussed.

Cleft of the lip with or without cleft palate (CL/P) represents one of the commonest congenital malformations in Western countries. Based on their association with specific malformative patterns or their presence as isolated defects, CL/P can be classified as syndromic and nonsyndromic, respectively. Both forms of CL/P are characterized by a strong genetic component. Syndromic forms are in many cases due to chromosomal aberrations or monogenic diseases. Among these, the Van der Woude syndrome, caused by mutation of the IRF6 gene, represents the commonest form of syndromic CL/P, accounting for …

Pyogenic granuloma (PG) is a benign non-neoplastic mucocutaneous lesion. It is a reactional response to constant minor trauma and might be related to hormonal changes. In the mouth, PG is manifested as a sessile or pedunculated, resilient, erythematous, exophytic and painful papule or nodule with a smooth or lobulated surface that bleeds easily. PG preferentially affects the gingiva, but may also occur on the lips, tongue, oral mucosa and palate. The most common treatment is surgical excision. This paper describes a mucocutaneous PG on the upper lip, analyzing the clinical characteristics and …

Median cleft lip is a midline vertical cleft through the upper lip. This is a rare anomaly with very few cases described in the literature. Median cleft lip has been thought to be associated with hypertelorism or hypotelorism. It is caused by the failure of fusion of the medial nasal prominences. In this case report, a 4½-year-old girl with a median cleft is presented. The patient has no other anomalies of the nose or alveolus. The patient has normotelorism. A shortened bifid frenulum of the upper lip is present. A technique using an elliptical excision of the cleft with muscle approximation i…

Nasolabial cysts are rare non-odontogenic cysts that occur beneath the ala nasi, and debate about their complicated, unique pathogenesis continues. It is widely accepted that these lesions originate from the anlage of the nasolacrimal duct; however, some still think that nasolabial cysts arise from fissural cysts. The authors report a patient with a nasolabial cyst who also had a unilateral cleft lip and palate. This unusual finding may indicate a different origin for nasolabial cysts than what has been accepted in the past.

In recent years, intraoral and perioral piercings have grown in popularity among teenagers and young adults. This is of concern to dental and medical professionals because of the risks and complications for oral, dental and general health. The risks and complications associated with tongue and lip piercings range from abnormal tooth wear and cracked tooth syndrome to gingival recession and systemic infections. In this report, we provide an overview of possible problems associated with oral piercings that may be encountered by dentists.

The vertebrate upper lip forms from initially freely projecting maxillary, medial nasal, and lateral nasal prominences at the rostral and lateral boundaries of the primitive oral cavity. These facial prominences arise during early embryogenesis from ventrally migrating neural crest cells in combination with the head ectoderm and mesoderm and undergo directed growth and expansion around the nasal pits to actively fuse with each other. Initial fusion is between lateral and medial nasal processes and is followed by fusion between maxillary and medial nasal processes. Fusion between these prominen…
