Squamous cell carcinoma of lip is a common malignancy in Indian subcontinent. Metastatic spread is infrequent. Although advanced tumours spread to lymph nodes in the neck, it does not typically present with lung metastasis or with lymphangitic carcinomatosis. We describe a patient who developed cough and increasing dyspnoea while on treatment for carcinoma of lip. Chest x-ray and computed tomography were consistent with lymphangitic carcinomatosis. Skin cancer is relatively uncommon among black individuals. Squamous cell carcinoma occurred in a scar of chronic discoid lupus erythematosus in a black patient. A review of 7 previously reported cases of squamous cell carcinoma in blacks with chronic discoid lupus erythematosus indicates a tendency of the cancer to metastasize. Sun exposure of the hypopigmented lesions of chronic discoid lupus and possibly other factors predispose to cancer of the skin. Poorly healing skin lesions in chronic discoid lupus should arouse suspicion of malignant change.

The authors report on their findings after analysing the results of an intermittent combination chemotherapy with Bleomycin (B.L.M.), Methotrexate (M.T.X.), Cyclophosphamide and corticoid (B.M.E.M.), in 117 cases of tumors of the Head and Neck. There were 30,0% of complete remission and 77,8% of responsiveness mors. Significant response rates were achieved with this B.M.E.M. combination therapy in: both advanced and not advanced tumors, both well and poor differentiated carcinomas; both exophitic and endophytic tumors.

A retrospective audit was made of histological records and hospital case notes of patients who had cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas excised from the head and neck region at the Maxillofacial Units at St Richard's Hospital, Chichester and Southlands Hospital, Shoreham-By-Sea, UK.
