The precision of value-based choices depends causally on fronto-parietal phase coupling.

Which meal would you like today, chicken or pasta? For such value-based choices, organisms must flexibly integrate various types of sensory information about internal states and the environment to transform them into actions. Recent accounts suggest that these choice-relevant processes are mediated by information transfer between functionally specialized but spatially distributed brain regions in parietal and prefrontal cortex; however, it remains unclear whether such fronto-parietal communication is causally involved in guiding value-based choices. We find that transcranially inducing oscilla

Effect of movement rate on corticokinematic coherence.

AIMS OF THE STUDY: This study investigates the effect of movement rate on the coupling between cortical magnetoencephalographic (MEG) signals and the kinematics of repetitive active finger movements, i.e., the corticokinematic coherence (CKC). MATERIAL AND METHODS: CKC was evaluated in ten right-handed healthy adults performing repetitive flexion-extension of the right-hand fingers in three different movement rate conditions: slow (∼1 Hz, duration: 11 min), medium (∼2 Hz, duration: 5 min) and fast (∼3 Hz, duration: 3 min). Neuromagnetic signals were recorded with a whole-scalp-covering MEG (E

Somatosensory evoked magnetic fields following tongue and hard palate stimulation on the preferred chewing side.

Although oral sensory feedback is essential for mastication, whether the cortical activity elicited by oral stimulation is associated with the preferred chewing side (PCS) is unclear. Somatosensory evoked fields were measured in 12 healthy volunteers (6 with the right side as the PCS and 6 with the left side as the PCS) following tongue and hard palate stimulation. Three components were identified over the contralateral (P40m, P60m, and P80m) and ipsilateral [P40m(I), P60m(I), and P80m(I)] hemispheres. Since no component was consistently detected across subjects, we evaluated the cortical acti

Identification of abnormal neuromagnetic signatures in the motor cortex of adolescent migraine.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the functional abnormalities of the motor cortices in children with migraine using magnetoencephalography (MEG) and a finger-tapping task. BACKGROUND: Cortical hyperexcitability has been reported in adults with migraine using MEG. Many children with migraine report difficulty with motor functioning. There is no report on motor-evoked magnetic activation in children with migraine using MEG and the latest signal processing methods. METHODS: Ten children with migraine (all female, 9 right-handed and 1 left-handed, aged 13-17 years) and 10 age- and gender-matched health…

Magnetoencephalographic findings of Panayiotopoulos syndrome with frontal epileptic discharges.

We previously reported the results of a magnetoencephalographic study in patients with Panayiotopoulos syndrome manifesting occipital epileptic discharges, in which the equivalent current dipoles of spike discharges were clustered alongside the major cortical sulci, such as parieto-occipital and calcarine. This report is the result of a magnetoencephalographic study of three patients with Panayiotopoulos syndrome exhibiting equivalent current dipoles clustering in the frontal area. Patient 1, a 13-year-old male, exhibited clustering equivalent current dipoles alongside right inferior frontal s

Cortical activity associated with auditory hallucinations.

Auditory hallucinations are one the most enigmatic and hampering symptoms associated with schizophrenia. Non-invasive functional imaging techniques have begun to delineate the underlying neuronal basis. We investigated the spontaneous magnetoencephalographic activity in a 33-year-old male schizophrenic patient and compared the results to those obtained from 13 healthy controls. Despite current neuroleptic medication (clozapine) the patient was still suffering from auditory hallucinations. Using the dipole density method, we were able to demonstrate an increase of fast MEG activity (12.5-30 Hz)

Implication of sensorimotor integration in the generation of periodic dystonic myoclonus in subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE).

To clarify the mechanism of periodic dystonic myoclonus in subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE), a 22-year-old patient with a clinical diagnosis of SSPE was electrophysiologically investigated. Involuntary movements consisted of generalized dystonic posturing which occurred quasiperiodically once every 4 to 8 seconds. Effects of sensory stimuli and voluntary movements were studied by means of polygraphic recording of surface electromyogram (EMG), scalp electroencephalogram (EEG), and magnetoencephalogram (MEG). EEG showed quasi-periodic, generalized, transient complexes synchronous to ea

Neocortical and Hippocampal Theta Oscillations Track Audiovisual Integration and Replay of Speech Memories.

"Are you talkin' to me?!" If you ever watched the masterpiece "Taxi Driver" directed by Martin Scorsese, you certainly recall the monologue … ynchronous movie clips focused on the face of speakers in real interviews, all the while undergoing magnetoencephalography recording. In the synchronous condition, the natural alignment between visual and auditory onsets was kept intact. In the asynchronous condition, auditory onsets were delayed to present lip movements and speech sounds in antiphase specifically with …

Plasma p-tau231 and NfL differently associate with functional connectivity patterns in cognitively unimpaired individuals.

Amid the rising relevance of early and non-invasive markers for neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease, this study addresses the relationship between two promising candidates: electrophysiology and plasma markers. Specifically, functional connectivity, which underlies cognitive function, with p-tau231 (i.e., a marker of incipient Aβ pathology) and neurofilament light chain (NfL, i.e., a neurodegeneration marker) were considered. Seventy-five cognitively unimpaired individuals underwent a blood extraction and two magnetoencephalography recordings, approximately 3 years apart. F…

Neural Speech Tracking Highlights the Importance of Visual Speech in Multi-speaker Situations.

Visual speech plays a powerful role in facilitating auditory speech processing and has been a publicly noticed topic with the wide usage of face masks during the COVID-19 pandemic. In a previous magnetoencephalography study, we showed that occluding the mouth area significantly impairs neural speech tracking. To rule out the possibility that this deterioration is because of degraded sound quality, in the present follow-up study, we presented participants with audiovisual (AV) and audio-only (A) speech. We further independently manipulated the trials by adding a face mask and a distractor speak…

Neural indices of heritable impulsivity: Impact of the COMT Val158Met polymorphism on frontal beta power during early motor preparation.

Studies of COMT Val158Met suggest that the neural circuitry subserving inhibitory control may be modulated by this functional polymorphism altering cortical dopamine availability, thus giving rise to heritable differences in behaviors. Using an anatomically-constrained magnetoencephalography method and stratifying the sample by COMT genotype, from a larger sample of 153 subjects, we examined the spatial and temporal dynamics of beta oscillations during motor execution and inhibition in 21 healthy Met158/Met158 (high dopamine) or 21 Val158/Val158 (low dopamine) genotype individuals during a Go/…

Potential association between suicide risk, aggression, impulsivity, and the somatosensory system.

Aggression and impulsivity are linked to suicidal behaviors, but their relationship to the suicidal crisis remains unclear. This magnetoencephalography (MEG) study investigated the link between aggression, impulsivity, and resting-state MEG power and connectivity. Four risk groups were enrolled: high-risk (HR; n = 14), who had a recent suicidal crisis; lower-risk (LR; n = 41), who had a history of suicide attempts but no suicide attempt or ideation in the past year; clinical control (CC; n = 38), who had anxiety/mood disorders but no suicidal history; and minimal risk (MR; n = 28), who had no …

Neural representations of perspectival shapes and attentional effects: Evidence from fMRI and MEG.

Does the human brain represent perspectival shapes, i.e., viewpoint-dependent object shapes, especially in relatively higher-level visual areas such as the lateral occipital cortex? What is the temporal profile of the appearance and disappearance of neural representations of perspectival shapes? And how does attention influence these neural representations? To answer these questions, we employed functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), magnetoencephalography (MEG), and multivariate decoding techniques to investigate spatiotemporal neural representations of perspectival shapes. Participant…

The Neural Representation of a Repeated Standard Stimulus in Dyslexia.

The neural representation of a repeated stimulus is the standard against which a deviant stimulus is measured in the brain, giving rise to the well-known mismatch response. It has been suggested that individuals with dyslexia have poor implicit memory for recently repeated stimuli, such as the train of standards in an oddball paradigm. Here, we examined how the neural representation of a standard emerges over repetitions, asking whether there is less sensitivity to repetition and/or less accrual of "standardness" over successive repetitions in dyslexia. We recorded magnetoencephalography (MEG)…
