Specific cultural traits of the precarity of older Latinos living alone with cognitive impairment in the San Francisco Bay Area.

OBJECTIVES: Latinos are about twice as likely to develop cognitive impairment. Culturally, filial support and familismo are expected within Latino families. Yet approximately twenty percent of Latinos live alone in the United States. The purpose of this study is to explore the concerns and priorities of older Latinos living alone with cognitive impairment, using a precarity framework. METHOD: We conducted 22 in-home interviews with older Latinos living alone with cognitive impairment, and we supplemented the interviews with interviews with members of the older adults' social circle and provid

Research on perceived brand characteristics of marathon participants.

Leveraging sporting events to drive urban development has been proven effective. However, the influence of city image on the perceived experience of branded marathon events, as an embodied practice within urban spaces, remains underexplored. This study considers marathon races as significant activities integrated into urban environments and specifically investigates how city image affects the perceived experience of branded marathon events. The objective of the research is to evaluate how city functions, governance, characteristics, and event culture and services influence marathon participant

CranFlow: An Application for Record-Taking and Management Through the Brazilian Database on Craniofacial Anomalies.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization has recognized the relevance of databases on craniofacial anomalies since . To date, there is no universal standard instrument/database focused on risk factors, clinical and genetic data collection, and follow-up that enables comparison between different populations and genotype-phenotype correlation. Although studies have shown that specific genes would impact outcomes, knowledge is not sufficient to subsidize cost-effectiveness strategies for diagnosis, surgical decision, and a multi-professional approach toward personalized medicine. METHODS: Based

Vayu bubble continuous positive airway pressure is a promising solution with favorable treatment outcomes for respiratory distress syndrome in newborns: a qualitative study in Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: According to Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey (2022), neonatal mortality, comprising 67% of under-5 deaths in Bangladesh, is significantly attributed to prematurity and low birth weight (LBW), accounting for 32% of neonatal deaths. Respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) is a prevalent concern among preterm and LBW infants, leading to substantial mortality. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends bubble continuous positive airway pressure (bCPAP) therapy, but the affordability and accessibility of conventional bCPAP devices for a large number of patients become major hur

Good work for dentists--ideal and reality for female unpromoted general practice dentists in a region of Sweden.

UNLABELLED: Female unpromoted general practice dentists (GPDs) in the Public Dental Health Service (PDHS) constitute about one fourth of all working dentists in Sweden. Unpromoted means that the position is without managerial functions. According to many reports, they have a problematic psychosocial work situation. THIS THESIS AIMED TO: Describe the perceived health for these GPDs, in comparison with others with a similar work situation. Analyse their sense of support in comparison with others. Describe how they perceived "good work", i.e. both the healthy and socially responsible work, and w

Penicillin allergy SHACK: Survey of hospital and community knowledge.

AIM: Penicillin allergy accounts for the majority of all reported adverse drug reactions in adults and children. Foregoing first-line antibiotic therapy due to penicillin allergy label is associated with an increased prevalence of infections by resistant organisms and longer hospitalisation. Clinician awareness of allergy assessment, referral indications, management of allergy and anaphylaxis is therefore vital but globally lacking. We aim to assess the knowledge of penicillin allergy, assessment and management in Western Australian health professionals. METHODS: An anonymous survey was distr

Caring amid crisis: a qualitative study of caregivers' experiences, wellbeing, and support for older adults.

BACKGROUND: Unpaid caregivers are a critical yet structurally under-recognized component of health and social care systems, providing essential support to older adults living with chronic illness, frailty, and complex care needs. Although caregiving challenges predate COVID-19, the pandemic intensified reliance on unpaid care and exposed persistent gaps in system coordination, service access, and caregiver support. This study examines how unpaid caregivers in Ontario, Canada, retrospectively understand caregiving during and following this period, with attention to how health and social care sy

The Essential Role of Psychosocial Care in Comprehensive Haemophilia Treatment: Global Perspectives From Haemophilia Treatment Centres and National Member Organizations.

Psychosocial care is a critical component of comprehensive haemophilia management, though its availability varies across regions and between clinical and community settings. This paper examines the landscape of psychosocial services offered through Haemophilia Treatment Centres (HTCs) and National Member Organizations (NMOs), both of which promote mental health, treatment adherence, and quality of life (QoL) using different frameworks. The delivery of psychosocial care in clinical settings, including staffing models, training, and collaboration with other healthcare professionals, is described

Toward Equitable Health Care: Bridging the Gap in the Health of Incarcerated Individuals in Africa.

The situation of correctional facilities in African countries represents a critical threat to health due to overcrowding, poor living conditions, and limited access to medical services. With over 3000 facilities and nearly a million incarcerated individuals, the prevalence of health conditions such as HIV/AIDS, mental health disorders, and tuberculosis is alarmingly high. These conditions are exacerbated by physical and psychological abuse and inadequate healthcare infrastructure. Despite these challenges, the health needs of incarcerated individuals in Africa remain largely neglected. This ar

The microbial flora of clinically infected cutaneous metastases: a retrospective study.

Symptomatic cutaneous metastases are associated with discharge, malodour, pruritus and pain, all of which may negatively impact quality of life and cutaneous health. We conducted a retrospective chart review of patients referred to the Dermatology Service at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center between August 2006 and June 2015, and characterized the microbial flora and antimicrobial management of cutaneous metastases in 64 patients. We detected pathogenic and/or opportunistic bacteria in 50% of skin lesions. The most commonly isolated organisms were Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aer

Methylmercury in water, sediment, and invertebrates in created wetlands of Rouge Park, Toronto, Canada.

Thousands of hectares of wetlands are created annually because wetlands provide beneficial ecosystem services. Wetlands are also key sites for production of the bioaccumulative neurotoxin methylmercury (MeHg), but little is known about MeHg production in created systems. Here, we studied methylmercury in sediment, water, and invertebrates in created wetlands of various ages. Sediment MeHg reached 8 ng g(-1) in the newest wetland, which was significantly greater than in natural, control wetlands. This trend was mirrored in several invertebrate taxa, whose concentrations reached as high as 1.6 μ

Public health and economic costs of investigating a suspected outbreak of Legionnaires' disease.

This paper provides one of the first assessments of the burden of both the public health investigation and the economic costs associated with an apparent outbreak of Legionnaires' disease (LD) in South East London. In addition to epidemiological, microbiological and environmental investigations, we collected data on the staff time and resources committed by the 11 main organizations responsible for managing the outbreak. Of the overall estimated costs of 455,856 pounds, only 14% (64,264 pounds) was spent on investigation and control of the outbreak compared with 86% (391,592 pounds) spent on t

European framework to decrease the burden of TB/HIV.

Tuberculosis (TB) in Europe is declining in countries in western and central Europe, but the burden is still high and increasing in eastern Europe. HIV/AIDS is increasing dramatically in eastern Europe. HIV-related tuberculosis (TB/HIV) morbidity and mortality are expected to accelerate significantly in the future. This framework aims to guide European countries in developing their national plan for reducing TB/HIV morbidity and mortality. It results from an extensive consultation process undertaken by the World Health Organization Regional Office for Europe and by those responsible for HIV/AI

Caring for the major trauma victim: the role for radiology.

Two innovations have improved the care of the major trauma victim in the past 20 years. Both depend on active radiologist participation. The first has been the progressive nationwide development of the Emergency Medical Service System, which identifies trauma centers by a process of categorization, regionalization, and verification. The hospital must be staffed and equipped to perform computed tomography, angiography, and sonography. Trauma centers effectively reduce morbidity and mortality of the accident patient. The second innovation has been the intensive use of computed tomography (CT) fo
