BACKGROUND: There are few studies measuring the dimensions of the maxillary sinus, being mostly based on computed tomography imaging and rarely being based on cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). The aim of this study was to measure the 3D osseous and soft tissue defined volume and surface area of the maxillary sinus. Further, possible associations with patient-specific and sinus-related variables were evaluated.
METHODS: A total of 128 maxillary sinuses in 64 patients were analyzed using cone-beam computed tomography data. Surface area and volume of the osseus maxillary sinuses as well as o…

PURPOSE: We aimed to investigate the medial and inferior localization of orbit in patients with maxillary sinus hypoplasia using paranasal computerized tomography.
METHODS: We included 76 patients who had a hypoplastic maxillary sinus at least on one side, and 76 patients with normal maxillary sinuses (control group). To assess the localization of orbit, we measured the distances from middle meatal antrostomy point to medial border of orbital medial wall and to the lower border of orbital floor in all patients. We performed statistical comparisons between the groups.
RESULTS: Of 76 patients,…

RATIONALE: Most cases of lymphoepithelial carcinoma (LEC) occur in the nasopharynx, and LEC in the sinonasal tract is extremely rare; thus, the clinical characteristics of sinonasal LEC are not well known.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 63-year-old Japanese man presented with a three-week history of left cheek pain, nasal obstruction and cheek swelling.
DIAGNOSES: Enhanced CT and MRI revealed a tumor of the left maxillary sinus that invaded the left orbit and hard palate, with multiple swollen left cervical lymph nodes. Open biopsy was performed, and the specimen was diagnosed as LEC.
INTERVENTIONS: A…

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a rare malignant secretory gland tumor. It is characterized by slow growth, long clinical course, local recurrences, and distant metastases. In the sinonasal tract, it most commonly arises in the maxillary sinus. It often presents at an advanced stage with perineural spread (PNS). Our patient presented with left-sided facial numbness without other symptoms. The numbness was localized to the left cheek, left side of nose, and left upper lip. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain revealed an enhancing lesion involving the left maxillary sinus with orbita…

The number of maxillofacial trauma (MFT) cases attended in the Emergency Department is progressively increasing in trend, owing to the rising statistics of motor-vehicle accidents (MVAs) and urban assaults in addition to occupational-related injuries. Prompt and thorough assessment is important for accurate diagnosis and paramount treatment plans. We will be discussing a case of unusual presentation of an orbital floor fracture post-MVA which was treated conservatively based on the clinical assessments during follow-ups, supported by radiological findings. We will also briefly discuss the diff

UNLABELLED: Mucosal cavernous hemangioma of the maxillary sinus: a series of 3 cases.
INTRODUCTION: Sott-tissue hemangiomas are benign vascular tumors that are common in the head and neck region and rare in the sinonasal tract. Those originating in the sinus mucosa are extremely rare. We report three cases of non-osseous (mucosal) cavernous hemangioma (CH) originating in the maxillary sinus and successfully managed endonasally and endoscopically.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: All patients were referred to the ENT outpatient department for a persistent unilateral pansinusitis that was resistant to br…

The rate of septum presence in the maxillary sinus has been reported to be over 30%. It was considered that a bony bridge might change to a maxillary sinus septum with growth in a previous study using dry child skulls. In the present investigation, maxillary sinus bony bridges and septa were longitudinally observed using computed tomography (CT). Multislice CT was performed in three patients. A bony bridge was defined as a bony structure between the maxillary sinus wall and dental germ. Also, a septum was defined as a pointed bony structure in the inferior wall of the maxillary sinus. The heig…

This article was designed to report the clinical case of the radicular cyst localized in the maxillary sinus of the 23 year-old man that had been detected before the surgical intervention was undertaken for its treatment. In the preceding visits of the patient to other medical settings, this condition was misinterpreted as a genuine (rhinogenic) cyst. It accounted for the choice of the inadequate surgical strategy for the management of this pathology. As a result, the patient experienced two relapse episodes of the disease. The thorough analysis of the patient's medical history and CT images o…

BACKGROUND: Ectopic eruption of a tooth or osteoma rarely occurs within the maxillary sinus. Coexistence of these two rare entities in the maxillary sinus has never been reported in the English literature.
CASE REPORT: Herein, we present a 21 year-old male patient with osteoma and ectopic tooth in the left maxillary sinus treated with the removal of the ectopic tooth by endoscopic sinus surgery and excision of the osteoma by the Caldwell-Luc procedure.
CONCLUSION: Unique coexistence of two different entities in the maxillary sinus is most likely due to pediatric facial trauma. Pediatric pati…

The blood supply to both the lateral wall of the maxillary sinus and the overlying membrane originates from the posterosuperior alveolar artery (PSAA) and the infraorbital artery. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the anatomic characteristics of the PSAA in a large number of subjects of the Lebanese population. Images of 696 sinuses were analyzed using cone beam computed tomography (CT). Coronal, axial, and sagittal CT images were evaluated for the presence of an osseous canal in the lateral wall of the sinus, and the prevalence, position, and location of the canal were studied …

AIM: To characterise and measure the Schneiderian membranes of individuals with periodontal diseases in China and to analyse the factors impacting maxillary sinus mucosal thickness using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT).
MATERIAL AND METHOD: A cohort of 221 patients with periodontal disease was subjected to cross-sectional CBCT examination. Various parameters, including age, sex, alveolar bone loss, furcation lesions and vertical infrabony pockets, were analysed as correlates of mucosal thickening (MT). Sinus mucosal thickness ≥ 2 mm qualified as MT.
RESULTS: MT was detected in 103 (48.9…

Oral rehabilitation with dental implants has become a routine treatment in contemporary dentistry. The displacement of dental implants into the sinus membrane, a complication related to the maxillary sinus, is one of the most common accidents reported in the literature. The treatment for this complication is the surgical removal of the implant. A 60-year-old woman with three dental implants displaced into the maxillary sinus (one implant displaced into the left maxillary sinus and two implants displaced into the right maxillary sinus) underwent surgery for removal of the implants. The surgery …
