The main goal of the current study was to evaluate the effectiveness of resveratrol (RESV) on protoscolices and hydatid cysts of Echinococcus granolosus. Echinococcus granolosus protoscolices and hydatid cyst were exposed to RPMI, DMSO, formalin, mebendazole, and different concentrations of RESV in vitro. Then, viability, GGT, and caspase-3 activity of protoscolices were evaluated using light microscopy, colorimetric, and enzymatic assay, respectively. Tissue changes and expression of caspase-3 apoptosis were analyzed on the hydatid cyst wall by histologic and immunohistochemistry methods. The

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To highlight the gastrointestinal helminths in the context of renewed global commitment to control or eliminate neglected tropical diseases in the coming decade.
RECENT FINDINGS: Two key documents, namely the 2012 London Declaration for Neglected Tropical Diseases and the 2013 World Health Assembly resolution, emphasize the importance of mass drug administration (MDA) for controlling several key neglected tropical diseases. These documents, together with the Global Burden of Disease Study 2010, establish the major gastrointestinal helminth infections, including the soil-tra

The clinical background, vertical transmission of Trichinella spiralis and helminthotoxic activity of sera were evaluated in four pregnant women infected at different gestation times. Parasitological and immunological parameters were analyzed. Patients presented clinical symptoms and a seroconversion pattern typical of Trichinella infection, independently of the gestation trimester. All patients, including one patient treated with mebendazole, gave birth to healthy infants at full term. Studies performed in placentas and umbilical cords by artificial digestion and/or immunofluorescence did not

BACKGROUND: Several studies have shown an inverse association between helminth infections and atopy, but none have clearly established that the pathogens themselves, rather than other associated factors, cause the suppression of atopy. To show a direct link, prospective intervention studies are required.
METHODS: A randomized, controlled trial was performed to study whether repeated anthelminthic treatment results in increased allergic sensitivity to house dust mites (HDMs) in chronically infected children. The trial population consisted of 317 Gabonese schoolchildren with a high prevalence o

Intestinal capillariasis caused by Capillaria philippinensis appeared first in the Philippines and subsequently in Thailand, Japan, Iran, Egypt, and Taiwan, but most infections occur in the Philippines and Thailand. As established experimentally, the life cycle involves freshwater fish as intermediate hosts and fish-eating birds as definitive hosts. Embryonated eggs from feces fed to fish hatch and grow as larvae in the fish intestines. Infective larvae fed to monkeys, Mongolian gerbils, and fish-eating birds develop into adults. Larvae become adults in 10 to 11 days, and the first-generation

Phosphorylcholine (PC), an immunodominant component of the cell wall of certain bacteria, fungi and nematodes, is known to induce low anti-PC antibody levels during natural infection by Trichinella spiralis. This article reports a study in which spleen cells from BCF1 mice infected with Trichinella sp. larvae were found to produce large numbers of direct haemolytic plaques in response to PC conjugated to sheep red blood cells (SRBC) after muscle-encysted larvae had been killed by treatment with mebendazole. Inhibition of the response by PC-chloride, immunodiffusion and immunoelectrophoretic st

The São Tomé e Príncipe government is committed to achieving neglected tropical disease (NTD) control and elimination as a public health problem by 2025. In 2014, the Ministry of Health led a national survey to determine the prevalence of soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) and schistosomiasis across the country. Following this survey, a preventive chemotherapy (PC) campaign with mebendazole and praziquantel reached 31 501 school-age children in 2015. A follow-up 2017 survey to determine the impact of the intervention showed success in controlling schistosomiasis, as no infections were found, bu

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Giardiasis remains a common cause of diarrhea and intestinal enteropathy globally. Here we give an overview of clinical treatment studies and discuss potential mechanisms and molecular targets for in-vitro testing of drug resistance.
RECENT FINDINGS: Giardia is a cause of disease both in diarrheal and nondiarrheal cases. The prevalence of treatment refractory giardiasis is increasing. Recent studies reveal 5-nitroimidazole refractory infection occurs in up to 50% of cases. Mechanisms of drug resistance are not known. Placebo controlled studies of drug efficacy, taking the s

BACKGROUND: Studies have shown that administration of anthelmintic drugs in pregnancy can reduce the incidence of maternal anaemia; however, data on other maternal and perinatal outcomes are limited.
AIM: This study was therefore conducted to evaluate the direct impact of mass deworming on delivery and perinatal outcome.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 560 healthy pregnant women in their second trimester were randomised to receive a single dose of oral mebendazole (500 mg) and placebo. Each participant received the standard dose of iron supplement and malaria prophylaxis. They were followed

OBJECTIVES: The roundworm Ascaris lumbricoides is one of the most prevalent parasites belonging to the class of the soil-transmitted helminths. Infections are most common in developing countries with a tropical climate where sanitation and hygiene are poor. However, prevalence of ascariasis in industrialized countries is increasing because of immigration and increasing number of refugees.
METHODS: We report a case of ascariasis in a female patient who was admitted to our hospital after she had left the informal refugee camp of Calais in the north of France.
RESULTS: After colonoscopic remova

RATIONALE: Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a parasitic zoonosis caused by echinococcus larvae. Manifestations of the disease include a severe damage to the liver and lung. Damages to the mesentery, omentum, spleen, brain, heart, bone, thyroid, kidney, and uterus are rarely observed. Moreover, primary ovarian and retroperitoneal hydatid disease is extremely rare, and is easily ignored or misdiagnosed.
PATIENT CONCERNS: We present a case of CE in a 34-year-old female who presented with an adnexal mass detected by B-ultrasound. Adnexal and retroperitoneal masses were removed by laparoscopic surger

Zoonotic infections are increasingly becoming public health menaces and are usually transmitted to humans due to unsuitable environmental conditions. One of them is hepatic capillariasis, caused by the parasite Capillaria hepatica, primarily a disease of rodents, with hepatic manifestations in humans. Although its prevalence is very low, it can cause significant morbidity and mortality, with cases reported from all over the world. The main infective form for humans is the embryonated egg of the parasite, which hatches in the intestine and ultimately colonize the liver. The larvae mature and re

Neglected parasitic infections, including Chagas disease, toxocariasis, cysticercosis, and toxoplasmosis, affect millions of persons in the United States. Relatively few resources have been devoted to surveillance, prevention, and treatment of these diseases. Chagas disease primarily affects Latin American immigrants and can cause heart failure and death if not treated. Immediate antiparasitic treatment is indicated for most patients with acute Chagas disease. Treatment is recommended for patients younger than 18 years who have chronic Chagas disease and is generally recommended for adults you

This review concerns the efficacy and safety of combinations of various drugs, including albendazole (ALB), diethylcarbamazine (DEC), ivermectin (IVM), mebendazole and praziquantel (PZQ). There were no significant pharmacokinetic interactions when ALB-PZQ, ALB-DEC, ALB-IVM or ALB-IVM-PZQ were co-administered. ALB did not add to the cure rate of PZQ in the treatment of Schistosoma japonicum, S. mansoni and S. haematobium. ALB and DEC in combination and alone were ineffective against S. haematobium infections. No combinations (ALB-PZQ, ALB-IVM and ALB-DEC) were superior to ALB against Ascaris lu

BACKGROUND: Anthelmintics are commonly used in tropical areas, but are also prescribed in Western countries with other climates. However, pharmacoepidemiologic studies of these drugs are rare.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate adverse drug reactions (ADRs) due to anthelmintics.
METHODS: All spontaneous reports of ADRs associated with albendazole, diethylcarbamazine, flubendazole, ivermectin, mebendazole, niclosamide, praziquantel, pyrantel pamoate, and thiabendazole were identified in the French Pharmacovigilance Database from January 1, 1985, to August 31, 1999. For each case, the following data we

This paper is a retrospective study of the first 51 cases of liver hydatid cysts, which underwent a conservative treatment between April 1996-December 2000. There were 28 females and 23 males with a mean age of 40.1 years (7-65), which had 63 liver hydatid cysts. In the right liver lobe were located 46 cysts, in the left liver lobe were located 7 cysts and in 10 cases cysts were located in both liver lobes. In 4 cases a pulmonary hydatidosis was associated. Abdominal ultrasound and CT scan were routinely performed and the cysts were classified in type I and II after Gharbi's classification. Al
