Trends in cognitive function before and after stroke in China.

BACKGROUND: While cognitive impairment after stroke is common, cognitive trends before stroke are poorly understood, especially among the Chinese population who have a relatively high stroke burden. We aimed to model the trajectories of cognitive function before and after new-onset stroke among Chinese. METHODS: A total of 13,311 Chinese participants aged ≥ 45 years and without a history of stroke were assessed at baseline between June 2011 and March 2012 and in at least one cognitive test between 2013 (wave 2) and 2018 (wave 4). Cognitive function was assessed using a global cognition score,

Association between precuneus volume and autobiographical memory impairment in posterior cortical atrophy: Beyond the visual syndrome.

Posterior cortical atrophy is a neurodegenerative syndrome characterised by progressive disruption of visual and perceptual processing, associated with atrophy in the parieto-occipital cortex. Current diagnostic criteria describe relative sparing of episodic memory function, but recent findings suggest that anterograde memory is often impaired. Whether these deficits extend to remote memory has not been addressed. A large body of evidence suggests that the recollection of an autobiographical event from the remote past coincides with the successful retrieval of visual images. We hypothesised th

Chemogenetic Stimulation of the Dorsal Motor Nucleus of the Vagus Mitigates Autonomic Dysfunction and Memory Decline in Rat Model of Alzheimer-Like Disease.

AIM: To test the hypothesis that Alzheimer-like metabolic neurodegeneration rat model leads to an autonomic dysfunction, memory impairment, and hippocampal amyloid pathology and that long-term chemogenetic stimulation of the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus reverses these alterations. METHODS: Male and female transgenic Long Evans rats received intracerebroventricular streptozotocin to induce sporadic Alzheimer-like pathology. Cardiovascular parameters and sympathetic and parasympathetic tone were evaluated in conscious animals. Episodic-like memory was assessed using the novel object recogn

The Association between Physical Frailty and Cognitive Performance in Older Adults Aged 60 to 96 Years: Data from the "Good Aging in Skåne" (GÅS) Swedish Population Study.

BACKGROUND: The association between physical frailty and performance in different cognitive domains in the absence of cognitive disorders is poorly understood. Hence, we aimed to explore the associations between frailty levels based on the Fried Physical Frailty Phenotype and performance of different cognitive domains. We also aimed to examine the associations between cognitive function and each criterion in the Fried Frailty Scale using the same cognitive domains in a non-dementia population aged 60-96 years. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 4,329 participants aged 60-96 years, d

Neuropsychological predictors of conversion from mild cognitive impairment to dementia at different timepoints.

INTRODUCTION: Impairment of episodic memory is largely considered the main cognitive marker of prodromic Alzheimer's disease (AD). Nevertheless, the neuropathological process in AD starts several years before and, apart from biomarkers well defined in the Amyloid (A), Tauopathy (T), Neurodegeneration (N) framework, early clinical and neuropsychological markers able to detect mild cognitive impairment (MCI) due to AD before the appearance of memory disorders are lacking in clinical practice. Investigations on semantic memory have shown promising results in providing an earlier marker of dementi

Eye movements reveal an impairing role of context reinstatement in temporal memory retrieval.

Mentally reactivating contextual details from the past often supports episodic memory retrieval. However, these benefits may depend on whether reinstated details align with the actual goal of retrieval, such as "when" an event occurred versus other contextual features. In this eye-tracking study, we tested whether auditory cues during sequence encoding are reflected in gaze behavior, and whether evidence of gaze-related context reinstatement relates to better or worse temporal order memory. Participants viewed sequences of centrally presented objects while listening to tones played in their le

White matter correlates of cognition: A diffusion magnetic resonance imaging study.

BACKGROUND: Our comprehension of the interplay of cognition and the brain remains constrained. While functional imaging studies have identified cognitive brain regions, structural correlates of cognitive functions remain underexplored. Advanced methods like Diffusion Magnetic Resonance Imaging (DMRI) facilitate the exploration of brain connectivity and White Matter (WM) tract microstructure. Therefore, we conducted connectometry method on DMRI data, to reveal WM tracts associated with cognition. METHODS: 125 healthy participants from the National Institute of Mental Health Intramural Healthy

Alpha rhythm modulations in the intraparietal sulcus reflect decision signals during item recognition.

Theoretical work and empirical observations suggest a contribution of regions along the intraparietal sulcus to the process of evidence accumulation during episodic memory retrieval. In the present study, we recorded magnetoencephalographic signals in a group of healthy human participants to test whether the pattern of oscillatory modulations in the lateral parietal lobe is consistent with the mnemonic accumulator hypothesis. To this aim, the dynamic properties and the spatial distribution of MEG oscillatory power modulations were investigated during an item recognition task in which the amoun

Frontoparietal cognitive control of verbal memory recall in Alzheimer's disease.

OBJECTIVE: Episodic memory retrieval is reliant upon cognitive control systems, of which 2 have been identified with functional neuroimaging: a cingulo-opercular salience network (SN) and a frontoparietal executive network (EN). In Alzheimer's disease (AD), pathology is distributed throughout higher-order cortices. The hypotheses were that this frontoparietal pathology would impair activity associated with verbal memory recall; and that central cholinesterase inhibition (ChI) would modulate this, improving memory recall. METHODS: Functional magnetic resonance imaging was used to study normal

A new behavioural intervention to enhance memory in older people-evening autobiographical recall.

Episodic memory deteriorates with age and in Alzheimer's Disease (AD). Interventions to enhance memory in these cohorts are limited and associated with disadvantages inherent in pharmaceuticals and in the cost/availability of formal cognitive enhancement programmes. Here we tested whether an autobiographical retrieval task could enhance performance in a separate word-list recognition task. The RESTED-AD Study (Remote Evaluation of Sleep To enhance understanding in Early Dementia) was a cohort study comprising individuals with AD MCI/early dementia and age-matched healthy controls (HC). Blood pressure interacts with APOE ε4 to predict memory performance in a midlife sample.

OBJECTIVE: Elevated blood pressure and the Apolipoprotein ε4 allele (APOE ε4) are independent risk factors for Alzheimer's disease. We sought to determine whether the combined presence of the APOE ε4 allele and elevated blood pressure is associated with lower cognitive performance in cognitively healthy middle-aged adults. METHODS: A total of 975 participants aged 30-54 (mean age = 44.47) were genotyped for APOE. Cardiometabolic risk factors including blood pressure, lipids, and glucose were assessed and cognitive function was measured using the Trail Making Test and the Visual Reproduction a

Default mode, executive function, and language functional connectivity networks are compromised in mild Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by mental and cognitive problems, particularly with memory, language, visuospatial skills (VS), and executive functions (EF). Advances in the neuroimaging of AD have highlighted dysfunctions in functional connectivity networks (FCNs), especially in the memory related default mode network (DMN). However, little is known about the integrity and clinical significance of FNCs that process other cognitive functions than memory. We evaluated 22 patients with mild AD and 26 healthy controls through a resting state functional MRI scan. We aimed to identify dif

The Relationship between Age, Neural Differentiation, and Memory Performance.

Healthy aging is associated with decreased neural selectivity (dedifferentiation) in category-selective cortical regions. This finding has prompted the suggestion that dedifferentiation contributes to age-related cognitive decline. Consistent with this possibility, dedifferentiation has been reported to negatively correlate with fluid intelligence in older adults. Here, we examined whether dedifferentiation is associated with performance in another cognitive domain-episodic memory-that is also highly vulnerable to aging. Given the proposed role of dedifferentiation in age-related cognitive dec

Association of β-Amyloid and Apolipoprotein E ε4 With Memory Decline in Preclinical Alzheimer Disease.

IMPORTANCE: Older age, high levels of β-amyloid (Aβ), and the presence of the apolipoprotein E (APOE) ε4 allele are risk factors for Alzheimer disease (AD). However, the extent to which increasing age, Aβ, and ε4 are associated with memory decline remains unclear, and the age at which memory decline begins for Aβ-positive ε4 carriers and noncarriers has not been determined. OBJECTIVE: To determine the association of age, Aβ level, and APOE ε4 with memory decline in a large group of cognitively healthy older adults. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This longitudinal observational study incl

The effect of tobacco abstinence on recognition memory, digit span recall, and attentional vigilance.

This article examines the effects of tobacco abstinence on recognition memory, digit span recall, and visual attentional vigilance. The results demonstrated that abstinence impaired recognition memory discrimination (ad libitum d' =.85, abstinent d' =.64), recognition memory hit rates (ad libitum =.60, abstinent =.54), accuracy of target detection in attentional vigilance (ad libitum =.99, abstinent =.97), and speed of target detection in attentional vigilance (ad libitum = 662 ms, abstinent = 687 ms). Abstinence did not impair digit span recall (ad libitum =.55, abstinent =.56). These results

The Bidirectional Association Between Cognitive Function and Gait Speed in Chinese Older Adults: Longitudinal Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive and gait speed decline are common conditions in older adults and are often associated with future adverse consequences. Although an association between cognitive function and gait speed has been demonstrated, its temporal sequence remains unclear, especially in older Chinese adults. Clarifying this could help identify interventions to improve public health in older adults. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to examine the longitudinal reciprocal association between gait speed and cognitive function and the possible temporal sequence of changes in both factors in a national longi

Altered default mode network connectivity in adolescents with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is characterized by intrusions, re-experiencing, avoidance and hyperarousal. These symptoms might be linked to dysfunction in core neurocognitive networks subserving self-referential mental processing (default mode network, DMN), detection of salient stimuli (salience network, SN) and cognitive dysfunction (central executive network, CEN). Resting state studies in adolescent PTSD are scarce and findings are inconsistent, probably due to differences in patient symptom severity. Resting state brain activity was measured in 14 adolescents with severe PTSD and
