Seventy-two postmenopausal osteoporotic women having more than one nontraumatic vertebral crush fracture were studied. Thirty-six of them, aged 68.8 +/- 1.2 years (18 +/- 4 YSM-years since menopause), were treated with 100 IU/day of salmon calcitonin i.m. plus 500 mg of elemental calcium for 10 days each month. Fifty rheumatodi patients (fifty hands) had Silastic joint implants in 144 metacarpophalangeal joints. Average follow-up time was 2.5 years (maximum 3.5 and minimum 1.5). At clinical examination, gross power, range of motion, lessening of ulnar deviation, relief of pain, and appearance were determined. The results were correlated with preoperative indications. Physeal fractures are common musculoskeletal injuries in foals and should be included as a differential diagnosis for the lame or nonweightbearing foal. Careful evaluation of the patient, including precise radiographic assessment, is paramount in determining the options for treatment. Restoration of adequate function in patients with metacarpal hands is a major challenge. In 1984, we presented a technique in which the contralateral uninjured ring finger was transferred by microvascular techniques to restore the dual hand functions of pinch and palmar grips. This was performed in combination with thumb reconstruction when necessary. PATIENTS: Singleton-Merten syndrome is an extremely rare autosomal dominant condition with less than 10 reported cases in the literature. It is characterized by abnormal aortic calcifications and dental abnormalities. We present an unusual coincidence of acromegaly and Turner's syndrome. A girl was diagnosed with Turner's syndrome when she presented with short stature, primary amenorrhea, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, and some heart and renal anomalies. Despite excessive hip fractures in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD), little is known about bone changes in these patients. We measured bone mineral density (BMD; Z scores) in PD patients and analyzed its relation to serum biochemical indices and sunlight exposure. Resection arthroplasties were performed through a carpal tunnel incision in 72 hands of 57 patients with trapeziometacarpal joint arthritis and coexistent pathology of the anterior hand or wrist. Sixty-nine hands were followed for an average of 44 (range, 12-74 months). Pain relief was excellent in 60 hands, good in 7, and fair in 2, and thumb motion was satisfactory in 64 hands. The authors report a series of six cases of acute traumatic dislocation of the trapeziometacarpal joint of the thumb. Displacement was always dorso-radial. There were associated osseous lesions in one patient: avulsion of the palmar tubercle of the base of the first metacarpal with a fracture of the trapezoid.
