Role of Copper in the Onset of Alzheimer's Disease Compared to Other Metals.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that is characterized by amyloid plaques in patients' brain tissue. The plaques are mainly made of β-amyloid peptides and trace elements including Zn2+, Cu2+, and Fe2+. Some studies have shown that AD can be considered a type of metal dyshomeostasis. Among metal ions involved in plaques, numerous studies have focused on copper ions, which seem to be one of the main cationic elements in plaque formation. The involvement of copper in AD is controversial, as some studies show a copper deficiency in AD, and consequently a need to enhance cop

Methylene-bridged, intramolecular donor-acceptor systems based on rare-earth metals and phosphinomethanides.

New geminally bonded intramolecular donor-acceptor systems, Cp2LnCH2PR2 (Ln = Y, Ho, Er, R = CHMe2, CMe3), were prepared by salt elimination reactions between the dicyclopentadienyl-element chlorides (Cp2LnCl, Ln = Y, Ho, Er) and diorganylphosphinomethanides (R2PCH2Li; R = CHMe2, CMe3). These compounds, 1-6, were characterized by elemental analyses, mass spectrometry and X-ray diffraction experiments and the yttrium species additionally by NMR spectroscopy. In the solid state the molecular structures differ from each other, depending on the steric demand of the phosphorus substituents. For all

The role of metals in mammalian olfaction of low molecular weight organosulfur compounds.

Covering: up to the end of 2017While suggestions concerning the possible role of metals in olfaction and taste date back 50 years, only recently has it been possible to confirm these proposals with experiments involving individual olfactory receptors (ORs). A detailed discussion of recent experimental results demonstrating the key role of metals in enhancing the response of human and other vertebrate ORs to specific odorants is presented against the backdrop of our knowledge of how the sense of smell functions both at the molecular and whole animal levels. This review emphasizes the role of me…

Heavy metals in the surface sediments of lakes on the Tibetan Plateau, China.

Heavy metal contamination has affected many regions in the world, particularly the developing countries of Asia. We investigated 8 heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, Cr, Co, Ni, and As) in the surface sediments of 18 lakes on the Tibetan Plateau. It was found that the distributions of the heavy metals showed no clear spatial pattern on the plateau. The results indicated that the mean concentrations of these metals in the sediment samples diminished as follows: Cr > As > Zn > Ni > Pb > Cu > Co > Cd. The results of geoaccumulation index (I geo) and potential ecological risk factor (E ir ) assessments…

Biochemical, Histopathological and Molecular Responses in Gills of Leuciscus cephalus Exposed to Metals.

Gills are major targets for acute metal toxicity in fish, due to their permanent contact with aquatic pollutants. To assess the effects of metals on gills of the Leuciscus cephalus (chub), fish individuals were collected from two sites in the Tur River, Romania, in upstream (site 1) and downstream (site 2) of a metal pollution source. Quantitative and hyperspectral analyses showed that Zn, Sr, and Fe concentrations were significantly higher in gills from site 2 compared with site 1. Malondialdehyde and advanced oxidation protein products levels increased 17 and 28%, respectively, whereas reduc…

Behavior of metals in a combined wastewater collection system in Ostrava, Czech Republic.

In combined wastewater collection systems, the concentrations of metals and the form of metal occurrence (dissolved form and bonding of metals to total suspended solids) influence the efficiency of capturing metals into sludge in wastewater treatment plants. The variability of metal concentrations was determined for 12 sampling sites during dry weather periods (DWP) and wet weather periods (WWP). Wastewater during DWP contain in dissolved form 77% of cadmium, 75% of nickel, 66% of arsenic, 57% of manganese and 50% of zinc and copper. Other metals are preferably bound to suspended particulates:…

Heavy metals and metalloids as autophagy inducing agents: focus on cadmium and arsenic.

In recent years, research on the autophagic process has greatly increased, invading the fields of biology and medicine. Several markers of the autophagic process have been discovered and various strategies have been reported studying this molecular process in different biological systems in both physiological and stress conditions. Furthermore, mechanisms of metalloid- or heavy metal-induced toxicity continue to be of interest given the ubiquitous nature and distribution of these contaminants in the environment where they often play the role of pollutants of numerous organisms. The aim of this

Stabilization of low valent silicon fluorides in the coordination sphere of transition metals.

Silicon(II) fluoride is unstable; therefore, isolation of the stable species is highly challenging and was not successful during the last 45 years. SiF(2) is generally generated in the gas phase at very high temperatures (~1100-1200 °C) and low pressures and readily disproportionates or polymerizes. We accomplished the syntheses of stable silicon(II) fluoride species by coordination of silicon(II) to transition metal carbonyls. Silicon(II) fluoride compounds L(F)Si·M(CO)(5) {M = Cr (4), Mo (5), W(6)} (L = PhC(NtBu)(2)) were prepared by metathesis reaction from the corresponding chloride with M

Environmental exposure to POPs and heavy metals in urban children from Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and heavy metals are well known environmental pollutants. Even though numerous studies have been carried out to assess human exposures to these compounds, there is still a lack of data on humans from developing countries, especially in underprivileged children. The objective of this study was to assess the exposure to POPs and heavy metals in children from Dhaka, Bangladesh. One specific aim was to investigate whether children working at, or living close to, open waste disposal sites (WDSs) were more heavily exposed than other urban children. In 2008, blood…

Pyrrole-hyaluronic acid conjugates for decreasing cell binding to metals and conducting polymers.

Surface modification of electrically conductive biomaterials has been studied to improve biocompatibility for a number of applications, such as implantable sensors and microelectrode arrays. In this study we electrochemically coated electrodes with biocompatible and non-cell adhesive hyaluronic acid (HA) to reduce cellular adhesion for potential use in neural prostheses. To this end, pyrrole-conjugated hyaluronic acid (PyHA) was synthesized and employed to electrochemically coat platinum, indium-tin oxide and polystyrene sulfonate-doped polypyrrole electrodes. This PyHA conjugate consisted of

Mapping metals in Parkinson's and normal brain using rapid-scanning x-ray fluorescence.

Rapid-scanning x-ray fluorescence (RS-XRF) is a synchrotron technology that maps multiple metals in tissues by employing unique hardware and software to increase scanning speed. RS-XRF was validated by mapping and quantifying iron, zinc and copper in brain slices from Parkinson's disease (PD) and unaffected subjects. Regions and structures in the brain were readily identified by their metal complement and each metal had a unique distribution. Many zinc-rich brain regions were low in iron and vice versa. The location and amount of iron in brain regions known to be affected in PD agreed with ana…

[In vitro susceptibility of Enterococcus strains to high level aminoglycosides and heavy metals].

The widespread use of antimicrobial agents in the hospitals and environmental contamination with heavy metals are increasingly related to resistance progression in microorganisms. The aim of this study was to investigate the resistance of enterococci to high level aminoglycosides and some heavy metals [lead (Pb+2), cadmium (Cd+2), mercury (Hg+2), arsenic (As+5)]. A total of 39 Enterococcus strains, isolated from stool and rectal swabs of hospitalized patients were included to the study. Twenty of the strains were resistant to glycopeptides (11 were resistant to vancomycin + teicoplanin and 9 w…
