Empowering digital public health: a study on the mechanisms by which the application of digital technology drives social entrepreneurial intentions in the health sector among university students.

Amidst the tide of the rapid development of digital public health, digital technology has become a core tool driving university students to address social pain points such as health inequality and engage in social innovation. Based on social innovation theory, this study constructs a multiple mediation model of "digital technology application--digital health practice literacy--psychological capital--social entrepreneurial intention," aiming to explore the internal capability and psychological transmission pathways through which digital technology empowerment influences university students' soc

A prospective study of psychological distress and weight status in adolescents/young adults.

BACKGROUND: The obesity-psychological distress relationship remains controversial. PURPOSE: This study aims to assess whether adolescents' psychological distress was associated with body mass index (BMI) class membership determined by latent class analysis. METHODS: Distress (anxiety, depression) and BMI were measured annually for 4 years in 1,528 adolescents. Growth mixture modeling derived latent BMI trajectory classes for models with 2-11 classes. The relationship of distress to class membership was examined in the best-fitting model using vector generalized linear regression. RESULTS: B

Connecting with a Slot Machine: Social Exclusion and Anthropomorphization Increase Gambling.

Two studies tested whether social exclusion can increase gambling behavior. In Study 1, participants were asked to relive a socially painful instance, a physically painful instance or a control condition and were then presented with a real online gambling device (i.e., a slot machine). The results revealed that participants who relived a socially painful instance played longer on the gambling device. In Study 2, we induced actual feelings of social disconnection and manipulated slot machine anthropomorphization. The results revealed a significant interaction between inclusionary status and ant

Associations of single parenting and sociodemographic factors with mental health among young adults.

BACKGROUND: The transition to adulthood is a critical period for mental health, yet limited evidence exists on how family structure and sociodemographic contexts are associated with depressive symptoms and psychological distress. METHODS: This cross-sectional study used data from the Spatial Social Networks and Environmental Exposure (SSNE) Project to examine associations between single parenting, sociodemographic characteristics, and mental health outcomes among 2446 young adults in the United States. Mental health was assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and the Depress

Human-centric participation paradigm: exploring the enjoyment experience of cultural heritage virtual museum based on system usability and VR technology.

As cultural heritage digitisation accelerates, virtual museums have emerged as powerful platforms for enriching public engagement with culture. Yet, the underlying psychological mechanisms that drive user enjoyment in these environments remain underexplored. Drawing on the Hedonic Motivation System Adoption Model (HMSAM) and Self-Determination Theory (SDT), this study develops an integrated theoretical framework to explain how system usability shapes user enjoyment through five core psychological constructs: perceived usefulness, curiosity, joy, control, and immersion. It also investigates the

Is the match/mismatch model based on a statistical artefact?

In the match/mismatch model, recently formulated by Rachman and coworkers, it is stated that incorrectly predicted aversive experiences are generally followed by an immediate adjustment of the predictions concerning aversiveness of the next experience. This model can be considered to reflect a psychological process of the formation of expectations. In the present article it is argued that a simple H0 model, assuming that predictions are completely randomly generated by the subject, may account for the same effects. This H0 model is used in a stringent test of empirical data to determine if the

Derivation and validation of a novel method to subgroup patients with functional dyspepsia: beyond upper gastrointestinal symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Conventionally, patients with functional dyspepsia are subgrouped based on upper gastrointestinal symptoms, according to the Rome criteria. However, psychological co-morbidity and extraintestinal symptoms are also relevant to functional gastrointestinal disorders. AIM: To investigate whether it is possible to subgroup people with functional dyspepsia using factors beyond upper gastrointestinal symptoms. METHODS: We collected demographic, symptom and psychological health data from adult subjects meeting the Rome III criteria for functional dyspepsia in two secondary care cross-sec

Impact of maltreatment, shame and self-criticism on psychological difficulties: A variable- and a person-centred approach with adolescents from community and residential youth care.

BACKGROUND: Childhood maltreatment is recognized as a primary contributor to psychological distress. Adolescents living in residential youth care (RYC) are a particularly vulnerable group, as their placement often results from repeated maltreatment. Nevertheless, the intermediary processes between maltreatment and psychological distress remain less clear. Previous research has identified the transdiagnostic value of feelings of shame and self-criticism, as well as the connection between childhood maltreatment and these two variables, yet no conceptual model integrating them has been tested. Positive reappraisal and refocus on planning as cognitive emotion-regulation correlates of psychological resilience: a cross-sectional observational study.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive emotion regulation may play an important role in psychological resilience; however, its association with resilience may be influenced by various factors, including cognitive ability and psychiatric symptoms. We examined whether specific cognitive emotion-regulation strategies remained associated with resilience after accounting for these factors. METHODS: We analyzed the data of 149 healthy young adults. Psychological resilience and cognitive emotion-regulation strategies were assessed using the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale and Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionna

From Resilience to Performance: A Serial Mediation Analysis of Stress and Loneliness Among Marine Engineers.

Previous research examining the relationship between psychological resilience and job performance has provided important insights; however, the psychosocial pathways underlying this relationship remain insufficiently understood in maritime settings. This study aimed to examine the relationship between psychological resilience and job performance, as well as the indirect pathways linking these variables through the serial mediation of perceived stress and loneliness among marine engineers. A sample of 400 marine engineers employed on Turkish-flagged commercial vessels participated in the study.

Anxiety and adjustment following SCI: a transdiagnostic psychological intervention combining Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Coping Effectiveness Training (CET).

INTRODUCTION: Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a life-changing experience which can result in a substantial range of psychological challenges. Although anxiety is elevated following SCI, evidence suggests that it is underreported and underdiagnosed, with consequences for long-term physical and mental health. In the UK, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is recommended as the first-line intervention for anxiety. However, people with SCI often face additional and complex challenges, which can limit the efficacy of protocol-delivered CBT. Pre-injury vulnerabilities can compound psychological challeng

From Psychological Maltreatment to Cyberbullying Victimization: Submissive Behavior as a Mediator and Social-Emotional Competence as a Moderator.

Despite growing attention to the link between psychological maltreatment and cyberbullying victimization, the underlying mechanisms remain underexplored, especially in non-Western cultural contexts like China. Recognizing cyberbullying as a critical issue with alarming prevalence rates among Chinese adolescents and its detrimental effects on well-being, this study aims to illuminate pathways within the cycle of victimization. Drawing on social rank theory, which posits that early maltreatment fosters submissive strategies that heighten vulnerability to victimization, and the resilience framewo

Poor sleep quality and loneliness among higher vocational college students: a conditional process analysis of psychological resilience and self-esteem.

BACKGROUND: Loneliness, sleep quality, psychological resilience, and self-esteem are closely related to young adults' everyday psychological adjustment. However, less is known about how sleep quality is associated with loneliness among higher vocational college students and whether this association depends on internal psychological resources. This study examined the association between sleep quality and loneliness and tested the mediating role of psychological resilience and the moderating role of self-esteem. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted from May to December 2023 in three

Optimism and mindfulness are associated with decreased abdominal pain among adolescents with inflammatory bowel disease.

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic relapsing and remitting disease, frequently causing abdominal pain. The gut-brain axis provides an extensive framework to understand the relationship between IBD and psychological well-being. Accumulating evidence indicates that prolonged psychological stress may worsen IBD symptoms and recurrence. Resilience factors (eg, optimism, self-efficacy, mindfulness) are associated with improved outcomes in other populations with recurrent pain; however, it has not been investigated in adolescent IBD populations. AIMS: To examine the associati

Individual Differences in Self-Regulation Do Not Predict Firearm Skill Acquisition During Police Training: A Longitudinal Study of 205 Trainees.

Police firearm training requires perceptual discrimination, decision-making, speed-accuracy control, and technical motor execution under institutional evaluation. This retrospective longitudinal study examined whether self-regulation-related psychological characteristics predicted firearm skill acquisition during an official Brazilian Federal Police training program. Two hundred five trainees completed a 13-week firearm course with standardized live-fire assessments using the Four-Color Target Test. Impulsivity, perceived stress, and self-control were assessed with the Barratt Impulsiveness Sc

Building a Machine Learning Prediction Model for Postpartum Depression Based on Ensemble Learning Strategies.

AIMS/BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a common perinatal mental health disorder that leads to adverse maternal and infant outcomes. Existing screening strategies rely on self-reported symptom presence, potentially delaying early identification. This study aims to integrate biological, psychological, and social predictive factors using an ensemble learning (EL) strategy to develop a superior early prediction machine learning (ML) model for PPD. METHODS: By integrating sociodemographic characteristics, clinical baseline data, and psychological test results of 1323 postpartum women, PP
