HIV entry occurs by concerted conformational changes in the envelope protein complex on the surface of the virus. This complex is made up of a trimer of heterodimers of two subunits: surface subunit, gp120, and transmembrane subunit, gp41. Conformational changes in the envelope complex allow gp41 to mediate membrane fusion leading to exposure of two gp41 regions: N-heptad repeat (NHR) and C-heptad repeat (CHR). Islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP), a 37-amino acid polypeptide hormone of the calcitonin family, is colocalized and cosecreted with insulin in secretory granules of pancreatic islet beta cells. IAPP can assemble into toxic oligomers and amyloid fibrils, a hallmark of type 2 diabetes. HP0892 (SwissProt/TrEMBL ID O25552) is a 90-residue conserved hypothetical protein from Helicobacter pylori strain 26695, with a calculated pI of 9.38 and a molecular mass of 10.41 kDa. Increased versatility for the synthesis of proteins and peptides by native chemical ligation requires the ability to ligate at positions other than Cys. Here, we report that Raney nickel can be used under standard conditions for the selective desulfurization of Cys in the presence of Cys(Acm). A single-nucleotide variant, C/T(-13910), located 14 kb upstream of the lactase gene (LCT), has been shown to be completely correlated with lactase persistence (LP) in northern Europeans. Protected trisaccharides containing N-acetylglucosamine can adopt unexpected conformations through the formation of hydrogen bonds involving the amide group. This conformational behavior was observed by NMR spectroscopy when three protected trisaccharides were dissolved in deuterated chloroform and to a lesser extent in deuterated dichloromethane. In contrast, NMR spectra of the same analogues acquired in the hydrogen bond-accepting solvents deuterated acetonitrile and dimethylsulfoxide showed that the N-acetylglucosamine residues adopted the expected 4C1 conformation.

Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS, MIM 209900) is a heterogeneous autosomal recessive disorder characterized by obesity, pigmentary retinopathy, polydactyly, renal malformations, mental retardation, and hypogenitalism. A candidate for a vaccine against infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) has been cloned and characterized from Moraxella bovis. The plb gene encodes a protein of 616 amino acids (molecular mass of ~65.8 kDa) that expresses phospholipase B activity.
