BACKGROUND: Microsporidia MB disrupts Plasmodium development in Anopheles mosquitoes, making it a possible biocontrol tool for malaria. As a tool for vector/disease control, its ecological distribution and the factors that determine their occurrence must be defined. We investigated the frequency of Microsporidia MB in Anopheles mosquitoes across selected sites in northern and southern Ghana, as well as the physicochemical parameters of mosquito breeding water that are associated with the occurrence of the fungus, by fitting regression models.
METHODS: A non-column extraction method was used t

Females of some mosquito species are anthropophilic, as they feed on human blood to support egg production and, hence, are forensically valuable if found at a crime scene. The present study investigated the blood meal digestion process in Culex pipiens L. both with and without heroin and proposed a method for estimating the post-feeding interval (PFI). Mosquitoes were fed on a control mouse, a heroin-injected mouse, or in vitro heroin-treated mouse blood. The blood meal digestion was then investigated at different hours post-feeding. Data showed that the blood meal size ingested by control mos

Although larval diet quality may affect adult mosquito fitness, its impact on parasite development is scarce. Plant pollen from Zea mays, Typha latifolia, and Prosopis juliflora was ultraviolet-sterilized and examined for effects on larval development, pupation rate, adult mosquito longevity, survival and infectivity. The control larvae were fed Tetramin fish food as a comparator food. Four treatment and two control groups were used for each pollen diet, and each experimental tray had 25 larvae. Female An. arabiensis were starved overnight and exposed to infectious blood using a membrane-feedi

Aedes albopictus tends to proliferate in small, often man-made bodies of water, largely present in urban private areas. For this reason, education and community participation are considered crucial for source reduction and mosquito control. In the current study, we identify mosquito breeding habitat and evaluate the effectiveness of resident education. Since 2010 several outbreaks of West Nile virus infection occurred in Greece however urban population has no previous experience with mosquito-borne disease related to Aedes species, such as Dengue, Zika and Chikungunya. After the introduction o…

The West Nile Virus (WNV) is a zoonotic arbovirus that has recently been causing outbreaks in many countries in southern and Central Europe. In 2012, for the first time, it caused an outbreak in eastern Croatia with total of 7 human clinical cases. With an aim of assisting public health personnel in order to improve survey protocols and vector control, the high risk areas of the WNV transmission were estimated and mapped. The study area included cities of Osijek and Slavonski Brod and 8 municipalities in Vukovarsko-Srijemska County. Risk estimation was based on seroprevalence of WNV infections

Two microbial mosquito larvicides, Bacillus thuringiensis ssp. israelensis (Bti) and Bacillus sphaericus (Bsph), have been shown to be highly effective in controlling mosquito larvae and have been used in larvicidal programs for many years. In exploring other modes of action of these agents, we studied the ovipositional response of Bsph susceptible and resistant Culex quinquefasciatus to aqueous suspensions of Bti and Bsph water dispersible granules (WDG). We quantified the level of mortality of adult mosquitoes caused by exposure to Bti and Bsph suspensions during oviposition. Significantly l

Mosquito vectors of eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV) and West Nile virus (WNV) in the USA reside within broad multi-species assemblages that vary in spatial and temporal composition, relative abundances and vector competence. These variations impact the risk of pathogen transmission and the operational management of these species by local public health vector control districts. However, most models of mosquito vector dynamics focus on single species and do not account for co-occurrence probabilities between mosquito species pairs across environmental gradients. In this investigation, w

Disadvantaged communities characterised by poor sanitation conditions, overcrowding, and limited vector control are highly susceptible to Aedes aegypti proliferation and arboviral disease transmission. Effective mosquito vector control requires a detailed understanding of Ae. aegypti oviposition preferences and spatial distribution within such urban environments. This study aimed to identify key environmental and behavioural drivers of Ae. aegypti proliferation in disadvantaged communities of Salvador, Brazil, combining household surveys, entomological assessments, and remote sensing to guide

BACKGROUND: Widespread insecticide resistance increasingly threatens malaria elimination, prompting a reassessment of vector control strategies. As Tanzania transitions from standard pyrethroid-only insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) to new-generation nets, evaluating the impact of this shift on malaria transmission and resistance is critical.
METHODS: Using the agent-based malaria model, EMOD, we assessed the impact of three ITN types, standard pyrethroid-only nets, pyrethroid-PBO nets (Olyset® Plus/PermaNet® 3.0), and the dual-active Interceptor® G2 nets (IG2) on malaria transmission and on mo

BACKGROUND: Over the last 20 years, malaria transmission on Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea has declined dramatically thanks to the implementation of a comprehensive set of malaria control activities, centered around island-wide indoor residual spraying (IRS). In 2024 Bioko Island experienced a lapse in malaria control funding, and as a result vector control activities (including IRS) were interrupted. However, agreements with funders allowed for both a previously planned malaria indicator survey (MIS) and the subsequent implementation of indoor residual spraying (IRS) in late 2024.

BACKGROUND: A dramatic malaria resurgence occurred in areas of Uganda between 2020 and 2022, coinciding with the switch to clothianidin-based formulations for indoor residual spraying. During the resurgence, Anopheles funestus sensu lato (s.l.) numbers increased more than those of Anopheles gambiae s.l., but when an alternative insecticide, pirimiphos-methyl, was reintroduced in 2023, both malaria cases and An. funestus mosquito density fell.
METHODS: In this study, we investigated possible causes of the resurgence by assessing (1) whether sufficient quantities of insecticide were sprayed, (2

BACKGROUND: Indoor residual spraying (IRS) is a core insecticide-based vector control tool employed in most malaria-affected settings globally. However, mosquito vectors have developed resistance to nearly all of the insecticides currently used in IRS. This has necessitated a transition to new classes of insecticides, from mostly using dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and pyrethroids from 1997 to 2010 to carbamates in 2011 and organophosphates in 2013. In addition, other vector control measures, like the use of long-lasting insecticide-treated bed nets (LLINs), have also been employed for

Understanding the behaviour of malaria vectors could lead to improved designs of partially treated insecticidal nets and low-cost nets with less insecticide content. The behaviour of Anopheles arabiensis around cow baited bed nets with partial adhesive treatments were assessed in experimental huts. The study was conducted in Moshi Tanzania, using a Latin Square design with five arms: no bed-net, intact untreated bed-net, roof, sides and whole adhesive treated bed-nets. The data analyses were done using generalized linear mixed effects models with proportions of mosquitoes on the bed-net panels

Insecticide-based mosquito control poses risks of environmental harm and resistance development. As a safer alternative, β-caryophyllene, a nontoxic compound derived from plants, was evaluated as a safer alternative for its excito-repellency against four Anopheles mosquito species. Using an excito-repellency assay, An. minimus showed the highest escape rates (100%) at 2.5% (contact) and 5% (noncontact) concentrations. An. harrisoni also exhibited strong responses at 7.5%, with 94.34% (contact) and 72.73% (noncontact) escape. In contrast, An. epiroticus showed minimal response (12-25.42%). Sign…

BACKGROUND: Escalating pyrethroid resistance in malaria vectors highlights the urgency of implementing new control tools incorporating non-pyrethroid molecules. Here, using DNA-based metabolic resistance markers, we assessed the efficacy of the dual active ingredients net Royal Guard against pyrethroids-resistant malaria vectors in Cameroon, establishing its long-term impact on mosquitoes' life traits after exposure.
RESULTS: Cone assays revealed low efficacy of Royal Guard against field Anopheles populations. However, analysis of the survival curves revealed that unexposed mosquitoes lived l

Malaria vector control tools currently focus on insecticide treated nets (ITNs) and indoor residual spraying in malaria-endemic locations, but additional preventative strategies are needed to address protection gaps. Larval source management (LSM) includes larvicide application to aquatic habitat and an array of alternative forms of environmental efforts. An individual-based transmission model for falciparum malaria is used to demonstrate the theoretical benefit of suppressing malaria adult mosquito vector densities through LSM. The model simulates results of epidemiological trials from Wester

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains a public health challenge with Nigeria having the highest burden in cases and deaths worldwide. Increased outdoor and indoor biting of Anopheles gambiae sensu lato (s.l.) and large gaps in protection have become emerging challenges threatening malaria control efforts in Kebbi State, Nigeria. This study provided data on vector behaviour, the distribution, diversity, and other characteristics of larval habitats to inform the feasibility of larval source management in the state.
METHODS: Routine entomological data were comparatively analyzed across six entomological m

Mosquito-borne infectious diseases, such as malaria, respond to environmental change in a complex way because the transmission of Plasmodium depends on a set of context-specific ecological and social factors that influence mosquito vectors and humans differently. Malaria continues to be a serious public health problem for populations living in and near the tropical humid forest of the Amazon region, where evidence suggests that deforestation of the Amazon forest has been the main environmental driver of persistent epidemics. In this review, we focus on the impact of increasing forest degradati

BACKGROUND: In the northeastern region of India, perennial malaria transmission persists in certain hotspots in areas geographically adjacent to the international borders with Bhutan, Bangladesh, and Myanmar, where both Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium falciparum coexist, particularly in remote, forested, and inaccessible areas. This northeastern landscape harbors a wide diversity of anopheline vector species; Anopheles minimus and Anopheles baimaii are the traditional primary vectors of malaria.
