The effect of optical illusions on the vestibular system in individuals with motion sickness: An analysis of sensory reweighting.

Exposure to optical illusions during postural control activates the sensory reweighting system. However, the impact of optical illusions on the vestibular system in individuals with motion sickness (MS) remains unclear. This study aims to investigate the effects of optical illusions on the vestibular system in individuals with MS. The study included 33 individuals with MS (MS group) and 34 individuals without MS (control group). The severity of MS was assessed using the Motion Sickness Susceptibility Questionnaire. All participants underwent cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (cVEM…

Association of Lymphatic Fluid Volume in the Inner Ear of Beagle Dogs with the Susceptibility to Motion Sickness.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to quantify total lymphatic fluid spaces of the inner ears volumetrically in the dog in order to find a correlation between the lymphatic volume of the inner ears and motion sickness susceptibility. METHODS: A total of 16 healthy adult Beagle dogs were used to delineate the lymphatic fluid spaces of inner ears by magnetic resonance imag- ing with a 3-dimensional-constructive interference steady-state sequence. Manual segmentation was applied for 3-dimensional reconstruction and volumetric quantification of total lymphatic space. The susceptibility of Beagle dogs t…

Idiosyncratic multisensory reweighting as the common cause for motion sickness susceptibility and adaptation to postural perturbation.

Numerous empirical and modeling studies have been done to find a relationship between postural stability and the susceptibility to motion sickness (MS). However, while the demonstration of a causal relationship between postural stability and the susceptibility to MS is still lacking, recent studies suggest that motion sick individuals have genuine deficits in selecting and reweighting multimodal sensory information. Here we investigate how the adaptation to changing postural situations develops and how the dynamics in multisensory integration is modulated on an individual basis along with MS s…

Phencynonate S-isomer as a eutomer is a novel central anticholinergic drug for anti-motion sickness.

To compare and evaluate the differences of stereoselective activity, the binding affinity, metabolism, transport and molecular docking of phencynonate isomers to muscarinic acetylcholine receptor (mAChR) were investigated in this study. The rotation stimulation and locomotor experiments were used to evaluate anti-motion sickness effects. The competitive affinity with [3H]-QNB and molecular docking were used for studying the interactions between the two isomers and mAChR. The stereoselective mechanism of isomers was investigated by incubation with rat liver microsomes, a protein binding assay a…

Motion sickness is associated with an increase in vestibular modulation of skin but not muscle sympathetic nerve activity.

We have previously shown that sinusoidal galvanic vestibular stimulation (sGVS), delivered bilaterally at frequencies of 0.08-2.00 Hz, cause … and indicates an organ-specific modulation of sympathetic outflow via the vestibular system during motion sickness.

The effects of simulated fog and motion on simulator sickness in a driving simulator and the duration of after-effects.

In the study, we checked: 1) how the simulator test conditions affect the severity of simulator sickness symptoms; 2) how the severity of simulator sickness symptoms changes over time; and 3) whether the conditions of the simulator test affect the severity of these symptoms in different ways, depending on the time that has elapsed since the performance of the task in the simulator. We studied 12 men aged 24-33 years (M = 28.8, SD = 3.26) using a truck simulator. The SSQ questionnaire was used to assess the severity of the symptoms of simulator sickness. Each of the subjects performed three 30-

Motion sickness with combined fore-aft and pitch oscillation: effect of phase and the visual scene.

BACKGROUND: The view ahead influences the motion sickness of car passengers but has been found to have little influence on the sickness caused by low frequency fore-and-aft oscillation. Acceleration and deceleration of vehicles is accompanied by pitch motions that may influence sickness. HYPOTHESES: It was hypothesized that: (1) a visual scene would influence sickness caused by combined fore-and-aft and pitch oscillation; and (2) sickness would be dependent on the phase between the fore-and-aft oscillation and the pitch oscillation. METHOD: While viewing one of three visual scenes (internal …

Influence of attention and predictive visual cue on motion perception and sickness in immersive virtual environment.

Relieving motion sickness and enhancing self-motion perception are required for the public application of immersive visual display system. The effects of user attention and predictive visual cue have been experimentally evaluated in this study. A viewpoint moving visual stimulus was applied to eighteen healthy adults. The subjective evaluation presumably suggested that a predictive visual cue enhances self-motion perception and relieves motion sickness at a same time.

Effect of antiemetic drugs on decrease in gastric emptying in experimental model of motion sickness in rats.

AIM: To study the effect of pretreatment with different antiemetic drugs on the motion sickness-induced inhibition in gastric emptying. METHODS: The rats were rotated for a period of 45 min at the rate of 30 rotations per min. RESULTS: Rotating the rats caused a significant decrease in gastric emptying as compared to the non-rotated group. Pretreatment with scopolamine (5 mg/kg, ip) did not reverse the delay in gastric emptying, while it per se caused inhibition of gastric emptying in the non-rotated group. Similarly other drugs mepyramine, cisapride, and granisetron did not have any effect …

Role of plasma vasopressin as a mediator of nausea and gastric slow wave dysrhythmias in motion sickness.

The possible role of vasopressin in nausea and gastric dysrhythmias in motion sickness was tested by electrogastrography in 14 subjects during circular vection (60 degrees/s) and vasopressin infusion. Tachygastria was expressed as the signal percent >4.5 cycles/min. Vection evoked nausea scores of 2.6 +/- 0.2 (0 = none to 3 = severe) in 10 subjects with increases in tachygastric activity (15 +/- 2 to 45 +/- 3%) and plasma vasopressin (4.5 +/- 1.5 to 8.4 +/- 2.5 pg/ml) that were blocked by atropine but not indomethacin. Four asymptomatic subjects had no tachygastria or vasopressin release. Vaso…

Effect of sickness severity on habituation to repeated motion challenges in aircrew referred for airsickness treatment.

The aim of this study was to determine whether varying the predetermined malaise level at which provocative motion challenges were stopped would affect the habituation rate. At the rate of 2 per day, 21 motion challenges were delivered, stopping either at initial symptoms or at moderate nausea, on a cross-over design randomized between subjects (n = 20). The cross-coupled motion challenge had an incrementing profile of rotational velocity from 2-90 degrees.s-1 in steps of 2 degrees.s-1 every 30 s, with 8 head movements per 30 s, of approximately 45 degrees. The number of head movements tolerat

[The spontaneous and evoked neuronal activity of the parietal associative cortex in cats during motion sickness].

In the experiments with the cats a spontaneous and induced activity of the neurons (57) of parietal associated cortex during motion sickness was studied. It was found that after a 15 min motion sickness 54 percent of the examined neurons displayed suppression, 20 percent of neurons did an increase of spontaneous activity. Twenty-six percent of neurons did not respond to motion sickness. The dynamics of induced neuronal responses under motion sickness effect was complex, a direction of the changes in induced responses frequently did not agree with that of alterations in a spontaneous cellular a…

Effects of serotonin antagonists on motion sickness and its suppression by 8-OH-DPAT in cats.

This investigation evaluated the antagonist properties of (-)propranolol, (+)propranolol, metergoline and BMY 7378 on the known effect of 8-OH-DPAT (DPAT) to decrease motion sickness in cats. (-)Propranolol produced a greater decrease in the antiemetic effect of DPAT than did (+)propranolol. Although metergoline produced a decrease in the antiemetic effect of DPAT, the decrease could not be clearly attributed to interactions with 5-HT1A receptors because metergoline alone slightly enhanced motion sickness. Depletion of 5-HT with PCPA produced a weaker, nonsignificant enhancement of motion sick…

The anti-emetic properties of 1-sulpiride in a ground-based model of space motion sickness.

L-sulpiride, at a dose of 4 mg/kg, essentially abolished motion-induced emesis in a group of 6 squirrel monkeys undergoing horizontal rotation at 25 rpm, a terrestrial model of space motion sickness (SMS). Extrapyramidal side effects were not observed. In the absence of the drug, the usual emetic response returned. In comparison while typical neuroleptics were also strongly anti-emetic, they produced a considerable degree of rigidity and akinesia.

Susceptibility to motion sickness and the development of anticipatory nausea and vomiting in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.

There are neural pathways between the vestibular system and an area of the brain in the fourth ventricle that appear to coordinate vomiting. Based on this and clinical observations, we theorized a relationship between a susceptibility to motion sickness and the intensity of nausea and vomiting from chemotherapy. A significant relationship (P less than 0.01) between a susceptibility to motion sickness and anticipatory nausea/vomiting in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy was found. Antimotion drugs such as scopolamine may have a greater antiemetic effect on chemotherapy patients susceptibl…

Influence of a visual display and frequency of whole-body angular oscillation on incidence of motion sickness.

Visual search within a head-fixed display consisting of a 12 X 12 digit matrix is degraded by whole-body angular oscillation at 0.02 Hz (+/- 155 degrees/s peak velocity), and signs and symptoms of motion sickness are prominent in a number of individuals within a 5-min exposure. Exposure to 2.5 Hz (+/- 20 degrees/s peak velocity) produces equivalent degradation of the visual search task, but does not produce signs and symptoms of motion sickness within a 5-min exposure.
