Traumatic ventricular septal defect and flail tricuspid valve: successful management by an extracorporeal membrane oxygenator-supported hybrid approach.

We report the successful management of a critically ill patient with a traumatic ventricular septal defect (VSD) and flail tricuspid valve sustained in a motorcycle accident. Multiple orthopedic injuries prevented emergency cardiac surgery. The patient was stabilized by venous arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenator support which allowed initial orthopedic repair. Repair of his cardiac injuries was then accomplished using a hybrid approach of percutaneous VSD closure using an Amplatzer post myocardial infarction VSD occluder which was also coil embolized followed by surgical tricuspid valv

Commuting to and from work and factors associated among industrial workers from southern Brazil.

Cross-sectional study that aimed to estimate the prevalence of forms of commuting to and from work and to identify factors associated among industrial workers in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil. A total of 2,265 workers completed a questionnaire on the forms of commuting to and from work (walking/biking, bus or car/motorcycle). Multinomial logistic regression was used to estimate the association between the outcome and sociodemographic, occupational and behavioral variables. The main form of commuting to and from work was by bus (45.7%). Workers with higher socioeconomic condit

Unhelmeted Riding, Drunk Riding, and Unlicensed Riding among Motorcyclists: A Population Study in Taiwan during 2011-2016.

This study aimed to investigate the association between drunk riding, unhelmeted riding, unlicensed riding, and running-off-road (ROR) crashes. Multiple logistic regression was used to calculate the adjusted odds ratio (AOR) by using the National Taiwan Traffic Crash Dataset for 2011-2016. The results revealed that unhelmeted riding was associated with 138% (AOR = 2.38; CI (confidence interval) = 2.34-2.42) and 47% (AOR = 1.47; CI = 1.45-1.49) higher risks of drunk riding and unlicensed riding, respectively. The risk of unhelmeted riding increased with blood alcohol concentrations (BACs), and

Factors influencing drink driving intention among motorcyclists in Vietnam.

OBJECTIVE: Reducing drink driving amongst motorcyclists has been deemed as a potential area for improving road traffic safety in most developing countries. However, research efforts paid on determining the underlying factors of drink driving intention amongst this road user group has been still scant. To fill this gap, this study explored the factors influencing motorcyclists' intention to drink and drive in Vietnam. METHODS: A questionnaire survey was conducted with a sample of 451 Vietnamese motorcycle riders. The theory of planned behavior (TPB) was utilized as a frame of reference to addr

Comparison of injury severity between E-bikes-related and other two-wheelers-related accidents: Based on an accident dataset.

This study aims to compare the accident injury severity of e-bikes with that of other types of two-wheelers based on accident data and to an … with the assistance of classification trees. Results show that e-bikes are closer to bicycles than motorcycles in terms of injury severities and the factors influencing them, in which the factors "accident configuration," "division of responsibility for the accident," and "collision with a heavy vehicle or four-wheeled vehicle" are significant. Based on the …

Computer vision-based helmet use registration for e-scooter riders - The impact of the mandatory helmet law in Copenhagen.

PROBLEM: E-scooters are a new form of mobility used more frequently in urban environments worldwide. As there is evidence of an increased risk of head injuries, helmets are recommended and (less frequently) legislated. Denmark has enacted mandatory e-scooter helmet use legislation from January 1, 2022. So far, it is unclear how this newly implemented law influenced helmet use of e-scooter riders in Denmark immediately after its implementation. METHOD: In this observational study, we register and compare e-scooter helmet use before the mandatory helmet use legislation (December 2021) and after

A national trauma data bank analysis of large animal-related injuries.

INTRODUCTION: Large animal-related injuries (LARI) are relatively uncommon, but, nevertheless, a public hazard. The objective of this study was to better understand LARI injury patterns and outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of the 2016 National Trauma Data Bank and used ICD-10 codes to identify patients injured by a large animal. The primary outcome was severe injury pattern, while secondary outcomes included mortality, hospital length of stay, ICU admission, and mechanical ventilation usage. RESULTS: There were 6,662 LARI included in our analysis. Most LAR

Sleepiness, attention and risk of accidents in powered two-wheelers.

In recent years, the role of "sleepiness at the wheel" in the occurrence of accidents has been increasingly highlighted with several national and international public health campaigns based on consensual research publications. However, one aspect of this phenomenon is rarely taken into account, i.e., the risk of sleep-induced accidents while riding powered two-wheelers (PTWs). PTWs are indeed involved in a high percentage of fatal accidents mostly with young male riders. The effects of sleepiness may be different in drivers and riders, partly because riders may be stimulated more by the road e

Smart helmet: Monitoring brain, cardiac and respiratory activity.

The timing of the assessment of the injuries following a road-traffic accident involving motorcyclists is absolutely crucial, particularly in the events with head trauma. Standard apparatus for monitoring cardiac activity is usually attached to the limbs or the torso, while the brain function is routinely measured with a separate unit connected to the head-mounted sensors. In stark contrast to these, we propose an integrated system which incorporates the two functionalities inside an ordinary motorcycle helmet. Multiple fabric electrodes were mounted inside the helmet at positions featuring go

What does a motorcyclist look at while driving at urban arterials?

To design adequate measures for enhancing riders' safety, a necessary first step is to understand the riders' visual scanning strategies under different traffic conditions. This paper presents the preliminary analysis of eye tracking data collected by three riders in the Athens metropolitan area, riding along urban arterial motorways and along an undivided urban road. Apart from the fixation duration and location, the fixated road elements and specific objects were annotated and analysed. The mean duration of fixations was found to be higher on urban roads than on motorways for all traffic den

Engineering in accidents: vehicle design and injuries.

This review has touched superficially on the various mechanisms of injuries to the main classes of road-user casualties, and illustrated some of the desirable vehicle design characteristics which can minimize road trauma. There is still much to be gained by better vehicle design. For occupants, enhanced performance from restraint systems, supplementary airbags, better structural integrity and better compatibility between cars and lorries are obvious areas where known solutions are waiting to be applied. For pedestrians there is an extensive literature outlining the characteristics of friendly
