Relationship Between the Mobility Method and Limb Skeletal Muscle Morphology in the Institutionalized Elderly in Japan: A Study Using Ultrasound Imaging to Evaluate Skeletal Muscle Structure.

Background Reduced mobility among institutionalized elderly individuals is associated with an increased risk of falls, progression to dependence on nursing care, and decline in activities of daily living. However, the qualitative changes in skeletal muscle structure in this population remain poorly understood. This study aimed to noninvasively evaluate muscle morphology, including muscle fiber alignment, as a potential early marker of functional decline. Methods This cross-sectional study included 41 elderly residents (mean age, 85.7 ± 8.7 years) of a long-term care facility. Participants were

Hindlimb Skeletal Muscle Function and Skeletal Quality and Strength in +/G610C Mice With and Without Weight-Bearing Exercise.

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a heterogeneous heritable connective tissue disorder associated with reduced bone mineral density and skeletal fragility. Bone is inherently mechanosensitive, with bone strength being proportional to muscle mass and strength. Physically active healthy children accrue more bone than inactive children. Children with type I OI exhibit decreased exercise capacity and muscle strength compared with healthy peers. It is unknown whether this muscle weakness reflects decreased physical activity or a muscle pathology. In this study, we used heterozygous G610C OI model mic

The role of muscle fascia in heterotopic ossification and maintenance of skeletal muscle integrity in fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva.

The rare genetic disorder fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) is characterized by progressive heterotopic ossification (HO) of skeletal muscles and associated soft tissues. FOP is caused by a gain-of-function mutation in the type l BMP receptor ACVR1 (also known as ALK2) that renders the receptor inappropriately responsive to activin ligands. HO is associated with muscle destruction and compromised muscle regeneration, although little is known of the mechanistic relationship between these pathophysiological disease manifestations. In mouse FOP models, HO is experimentally induced by di

Characteristics of Skeletal Muscles in Lower Limb From the Perspective of Muscle Quality in Patients With Knee Osteoarthritis.

This observational cohort study aimed to comprehensively assess the muscle quality of gluteus, quadriceps femoris, and calf muscles. Seventy-seven patients with knee osteoarthritis scheduled for total knee arthroplasty participated in this retrospective cohort study. The cross-sectional area (CSA) of the lower limb muscles was assessed using computed tomography images, and muscular attenuation was evaluated in Hounsfield Units (HU). Muscle quality was categorized into four groups based on HU values: intramuscular fat tissue, very low-density muscle (VLDM), low-density muscle (LDM), and normal-

Inductive analysis of the spatial distribution characteristics of neurons that innervate skeletal muscle and their correlation with muscle phenotype.

JOURNAL/nrgr/04.03/01300535-202606000-00081/figure1/v/2026-02-11T151048Z/r/image-tiff To perform various functions in the body, skeletal muscle is controlled and coordinated as a whole by nerves. However, there has been little research into whether the nerve control characteristics of different muscles are different, and the importance of these potential differences. In the present study, we used a three-dimensional imaging of solvent-cleared organ-compatible multi-tracer technique to explore the spatial distribution patterns of sensory and sympathetic neurons that innervate limb muscles. Effect of Burosumab on Muscle Function and Strength, and Rates of ATP Synthesis in Skeletal Muscle in Adults With XLH.

CONTEXT: In clinical trials, burosumab ameliorates symptoms of pain, fatigue, and stiffness and improves performance on certain muscle function studies in patients with X-linked hypophosphatemia (XLH). OBJECTIVE: This work aimed to determine if burosumab increases adenosine triphosphate (ATP) synthesis in skeletal muscle of treatment-naive adults with XLH, and if so, whether that correlates with improved muscle function. METHODS: Ten untreated, symptomatic adults with XLH had ATP synthesis rates measured in the right calf using the 31P magnetic resonance spectroscopy saturation transfer tech

The series of smooth muscle structures in the pelvic floors of men: Dynamic coordination of smooth and skeletal muscles.

INTRODUCTION: Recent studies have revealed the extended nature of smooth muscle structures in the pelvic floor, revising the conventional understanding of the "perineal body." Our aim was to clarify the three-dimensional configuration and detailed histological properties of the smooth muscle structures in the region anterior to the rectum and anal canal in men. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four male cadavers were subjected to macroscopic and immunohistological examinations. The pelvis was dissected from the perineal side, as in the viewing angle during transperineal surgeries. Serial transverse sec

Psoas muscle area is not representative of total skeletal muscle area in the assessment of sarcopenia in ovarian cancer.

BACKGROUND: Computed tomography measurements of total skeletal muscle area can detect changes and predict overall survival (OS) in patients with advanced ovarian cancer. This study investigates whether assessment of psoas muscle area reflects total muscle area and can be used to assess sarcopenia in ovarian cancer patients. METHODS: Ovarian cancer patients (n = 150) treated with induction chemotherapy and interval debulking were enrolled retrospectively in this longitudinal study. Muscle was measured cross sectionally with computed tomography in three ways: (i) software quantification of tota

Muscle weakness in respiratory and peripheral skeletal muscles in a mouse model for nebulin-based nemaline myopathy.

Nemaline myopathy is among the most common non-dystrophic congenital myopathies, and is characterized by the presence of nemaline rods in skeletal muscles fibers, general muscle weakness, and hypotonia. Although respiratory failure is the main cause of death in nemaline myopathy, only little is known regarding the contractile strength of the diaphragm, the main muscle of inspiration. To investigate diaphragm contractility, in the present study we took advantage of a mouse model for nebulin-based nemaline myopathy that we recently developed. In this mouse model, exon 55 of Neb is deleted (NebΔE

The influence of undernutrition during gestation on skeletal muscle cellularity and on the expression of genes that control muscle growth.

We examined the effects of two levels of gestational undernutrition (50 % and 40 % of ad libitum) on postnatal growth rate, skeletal muscle cellularity and the expression of genes that control muscle growth, in the offspring at weaning. The results showed that the rat pups born to mothers fed the 50 % diet during gestation and a control diet during lactation had an increased postnatal growth rate compared with the pups fed the more restricted diet (40 % of ad libitum). Surprisingly, the growth rate of the control group (ad libitum) was intermediate between the 50 % and 40 % groups. The restric

Exercise-induced angiogenesis-related growth and transcription factors in skeletal muscle, and their modification in muscle pathology.

Angiogenesis is the process of formation of new blood vessels; it is generally a rare occurrence in the adult, although it is a common adaptive response to exercise training in skeletal muscle. Current thinking is that angiogenesis is mediated by diffusible angiogenic factors and that the angiogenic activity is regulated through the balance between stimulatory and inhibitory factors. Recent studies have shown that up-regulation of angiogenic factors occurs in response to increased muscle activity in skeletal muscle. The major putative angiogenic factor, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF

Histology of skeletal muscle in adults with GH deficiency: comparison with normal muscle and response to GH treatment.

The histology of needle biopsy specimens of skeletal muscle from the vastus lateralis was quantitatively assessed in a group of adults with growth hormone (GH) deficiency, most of whom had hypopituitarism treated with conventional pituitary hormone replacement. The mean age of the 21 patients (16 males and 5 females) was 39 +/- 2 (SEM). Comparisons were made with age- and sex-matched controls following six months double-blind, placebo-controlled treatment with recombinant human GH (rhGH) in the GH-deficient patients. Before treatment, needle muscle biopsies from patients with GH deficiency sho

Non-muscle myosin IIC predominantly expressed in the slow-twitch skeletal muscles impedes age-related muscle weakness.

Skeletal muscle expresses three types of non-muscle myosin (NM) II in addition to skeletal type myosin. While immature myoblasts have been reported to express NMIIA and NMIIB, playing roles in cell morphology, the specific localization and function of NMIIC in skeletal muscle cells remain unclear. In this study, we aimed to investigate the expression pattern and the physiological role of NMIIC in skeletal muscle. NMIIC was specifically expressed in the slow-twitch muscles such as soleus, which primarily consists of type I and type IIa fibers, and its expression increased as muscle differentiat

Evaluation of taurine and carnitine concentrations in whole blood, plasma, skeletal muscle and cardiac muscle in dogs.

Little is known about how plasma and whole blood taurine and plasma carnitine correlate to concentrations in skeletal and cardiac muscle and the effects of diet in dogs. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the correlation among plasma, skeletal and cardiac muscle carnitine and taurine and whole blood taurine and determine the effect of diet. The study protocol was approved by the Pet Food Solutions Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee. Thirty-three mixed-breed hounds and 32 beagles were evaluated at Day 0 then removed from their baseline diet and randomized to a test diet: high an

Skeletal muscle fibrosis is associated with decreased muscle inflammation and weakness in patients with chronic kidney disease.

Muscle dysfunction is an important cause of morbidity among patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Although muscle fibrosis is present in a CKD rodent model, its existence in humans and its impact on physical function are currently unknown. We examined isometric leg extension strength and measures of skeletal muscle fibrosis and inflammation in vastus lateralis muscle from CKD patients ( n = 10) and healthy, sedentary controls ( n = 10). Histochemistry and immunohistochemistry were used to assess muscle collagen and macrophage and fibro/adipogenic progenitor (FAP) cell populations, and RT

THE RENIN-ANGIOTENSIN SYSTEM AND THE BIOLOGY OF SKELETAL MUSCLE: MECHANISMS OF MUSCLE WASTING IN CHRONIC DISEASE STATES.

Sarcopenia and cachexia are muscle-wasting syndromes associated with aging and with many chronic diseases such as congestive heart failure, diabetes, cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and renal failure. While mechanisms are complex, these conditions are often accompanied by elevated angiotensin II (Ang II). We found that Ang II infusion in rodents leads to skeletal muscle wasting via alterations in insulin-like growth factor-1 signaling, increased apoptosis, enhanced muscle protein breakdown via the ubiquitin-proteasome system, and decreased appetite resulting from downregulation

Comparisons of the skeletal muscle metabolic abnormalities in the arm and leg muscles of patients with chronic heart failure.

BACKGROUND: It has been suspected for some time that patients with chronic heart failure (CHF) have abnormal muscle metabolism, so in the present study the muscle metabolism of the arm and leg were compared by (31)P magnetic resonance spectroscopy ((31)P-MRS) to examine the relationship to exercise tolerance. METHODS AND RESULTS: The study group comprised 13 patients and 11 normal controls. Calf-plantar and forearm-wrist flexion were performed to evaluate the metabolic capacity assessed as the phosphocreatine breakdown rate (PCr-slope) and muscle pH at a submaximal (70% peak) work rate (subma

Neural regulation of the formation of skeletal muscle phosphorylase kinase holoenzyme in adult and developing rat muscle.

Neural influences on the co-ordination of expression of the multiple subunits of skeletal muscle phosphorylase kinase and their assembly to form the holoenzyme complex, alpha4beta4gamma4delta4, have been examined during denervation and re-innervation of adult skeletal muscle and during neonatal muscle development. Denervation of the tibialis anterior and extensor digitorum longus muscles of the rat hindlimb was associated with a rapid decline in the mRNA for the gamma subunit, and an abrupt decrease in gamma-subunit protein. The levels of the alpha- and beta-subunit proteins in the denervated

The effect of zidovudine on skeletal muscle mtDNA in HIV-1 infected patients with mild or no muscle dysfunction.

Zidovudine (ZDV), a nucleoside analogue which inhibits viral replication, is currently used in the treatment of type 1 human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1) infection. It has been considered to be the cause of an acquired form of myopathy associated with a depletion of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) in muscle fibres, although the fact that the patients previously studied were clearly symptomatic, and the theoretical difficulty in differentiating on HIV-related myopathy from the effects of ZDV, led to a controversy on the possible deleterious effect of ZDV on muscle fibres. We studied the muscle biop
