Musculoskeletal Complications of CancerA Survey of 50 Patients.

A variety of complications associated with cancer may adversely affect the spine and musculoskeletal system, resulting in physical impairment, pain, or both. Dysfunction may arise because of tissue injury at the primary site of disease; from metastatic lesions and paraneoplastic syndromes; or as the result of treatment and bed rest. This study evaluated 50 patients seen in consultation by the Rehabilitation Service at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (28 retrospective, 22 prospective). Patients were evaluated for functional problems resulting from their disease or therapy. Patients were …

Artificial Mitochondrial Transfer (AMT) for the Management of Age-related Musculoskeletal Degenerative Disorders: An Emerging Avenue for Bone and Cartilage Metabolism Regulation.

Musculoskeletal system disorders are among the most common age-related conditions worldwide. All associated with a degeneration of the supporting tissues under pro-inflammatory micro- and macro-environments, the erosion of cartilage and later of bones, are the main hallmarks of these pathologies. Affected chondrocytes, osteoblasts and synoviocytes, that are all critical actors in the bone and cartilage defects exhibit mitochondrial dysfunction that develops immediately following cartilage and bone injury, and leads to tissue residing specific cell death, cartilage degeneration, bone erosion, a…

Management of patients presenting with generalized musculoskeletal pain and a suspicion of Lyme disease.

Lyme disease is caused by bacteria of the B. burgdorferi sensu lato complex, and can give polymorphic clinical manifestations that can affect several organs such as the skin, the central nervous system, or the joints. In recent years, patients' associations and physicians have been supporting the hypothesis that this infection would manifest as chronic generalized musculoskeletal pain symptoms, named "chronic Lyme disease". Fibromyalgia is a clinical presentation characterized by chronic generalized musculoskeletal pain with a major impact on quality of life and social and psychological functi

Dystrophin and utrophin "double knockout" dystrophic mice exhibit a spectrum of degenerative musculoskeletal abnormalities.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a degenerative muscle disorder characterized by the lack of dystrophin expression at the sarcolemma of muscle fibers. In addition, DMD patients acquire osteopenia, fragility fractures, and scoliosis indicating that a deficiency in skeletal homeostasis coexists but little is known about the effects of DMD on bone and other connective tissues within the musculoskeletal system. Recent evidence has emerged implicating adult stem cell dysfunction in DMD myopathogenesis. Given the common mesenchymal origin of muscle and bone, we sought to investigate bone and oth…

Musculoskeletal disorders among construction apprentices in Hungary.

The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of occupationally related musculoskeletal disorder (MSD) symptoms and carpal tunne … o MSD symptoms. No cases of CTS were found in this sample of apprentices. Although disorders of the musculoskeletal system are more prevalent among experienced construction workers, this study indicated that symptoms of MSDs are present among young construction workers. Assessing the magnitude and nature of occupational related MSDs is the first step in promoting a heal …

Central Sensitization as a Risk Factor in Work-related Musculoskeletal Pain - New Aspects of Functional Disorders.

When analyzing work-related complaints, it is important to consider not only external and psychosocial factors but also conditions that have their origin in neurological processes, which lead to sensitization. This results in a lowering of receptor thresholds, leading to increased sensitivity to often inadequate stimuli. This hypersensitivity manifests not only as pain but also in the form of various discomforts. The basis of many workplace problems may therefore not be isolated causes, but rather an underlying sensitization process as an expression of dysfunctional regulatory feedback loops.

A guide to identify cervical autonomic dysfunctions (and associated conditions) in patients with musculoskeletal disorders in physical therapy practice.

BACKGROUND: Differential diagnosis is a hot topic in physical therapy, especially for those working in a direct access setting dealing with neck pain and its associated disorders. All international guidelines agree in recommending to first rule out non-musculoskeletal pathologies as the cause of signs and symptoms in the patient. Although the autonomic nervous system (ANS) has a crucial role and is also involved in pain conditions, coverage of it in neuroscience textbooks and educational programmes is limited and most healthcare professionals are unfamiliar with it. Although autonomic conditio

Point-of-care ultrasound in musculoskeletal field.

The musculoskeletal field is relatively new in point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS), a modality that has been gaining significance with the evolution of ultrasound (US) equipment and high-frequency probes. Images have become progressively clearer over the past decade, making it possible to diagnose many pathological conditions without exposure to radiation. Ultrasonography reveals many soft tissue pathologies that cannot be visualized using plain radiographs, which have historically been the first choice for the evaluation of musculoskeletal disorders. US saves money and time compared to magnetic

Cumulative Sport-Related Injuries and Longer Term Impact in Retired Male Elite- and Amateur-Level Rugby Code Athletes and Non-contact Athletes: A Retrospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Rugby union and rugby league are popular team contact sports, but they bring a high risk of injury. Although previous studies have reported injury occurrence across one or several seasons, none have explored the total number of injuries sustained across an entire career. As the first to do so, the aim of this study was to report on cumulative injuries and their perceived long-term impact in retired rugby code athletes compared to athletes from non-contact sports. METHODS: One hundred and eighty-nine former rugby code athletes (rugby union n = 145; rugby league n = 44) and 65 forme

[Tumor-like bony lesions of the skeleton].

Tumor-like bony lesions are, by definition bony lesions, which can be clinically, radiologically and histologically mistaken for real bone tumors. This article presents the aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC), solitary bone cyst (SBC), fibrous dysplasia, osteofibrous dysplasia Campanacci and non-ossifying fibroma (NOF). Many tumor-like bony lesions are often incidental findings. The combination of X‑ray imaging specifically supplemented by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computed tomography (CT) enables a diagnostic classification in the majority of cases.

Irisin and musculoskeletal health.

Irisin is a hormone-like myokine produced in abundance by skeletal muscle in response to exercise, both in mice and humans. Once released into the circulation, irisin acts on white adipocytes to induce the browning response and subsequently activates nonshivering thermogenesis. We have examined the premise that irisin produced during exercise may subserve further functions in the musculoskeletal system. We review evidence for its possible skeletal effects, including the central role that irisin plays in the control of bone mass, with positive effects on cortical mineral density and geometry in…

Extraintestinal manifestations of coeliac disease.

Coeliac disease is a common disorder that can arise at any age and typically presents with a broad spectrum of symptoms. The disease is thought to be underdiagnosed, in part owing to the fact that coeliac disease is often characterized by associated conditions and extraintestinal manifestations that can misdirect and impede diagnosis. Some of these manifestations are direct consequences of autoimmunity, such as dermatitis herpetiformis or gluten ataxia, whereas others are indirectly related to inflammation and/or malabsorption including anaemia, osteoporosis, short stature and delayed puberty.

Foul play is associated with injury incidence: an epidemiological study of three FIFA World Cups (2002-2010).

BACKGROUND: Foul play has been considered as one of the most important known extrinsic risk factors for injuries in football. AIMS: To compare the incidence and characteristics of foul play injuries and non-foul injuries. METHODS: Team physicians' postmatch injury reports and official match statistics were obtained from all matches of the 2002, 2006 and 2010 Fédération Internationale de Football Association World Cups. RESULTS: The number of injuries was associated with the number of fouls in a match. The incidence of foul play injuries (20.6/1000 match-hours, 95% CI 17.3 to 24.4) was signi
