INTRODUCTION: Statin-associated muscle symptoms are common side effects of statin therapy. These symptoms include myopathy, myalgia, and rhabdomyolysis. Vitamin D has been associated with musculoskeletal health; thus, its deficiency may produce detrimental effects in this tissue. Indeed, one symptom of vitamin D deficiency is myalgia, and the normalization of low vitamin D levels can relieve it.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study examined 1210 statin-treated patients to assess vitamin D status. These patients were divided into two groups: 287 with statin-associated muscle sympto…

This case report describes an instance of exercise-induced rhabdomyolysis caused by an extreme conditioning program (ECP) competition. A 35-year-old female presented with abdominal pain and soreness, which began one day after she completed two days of ECPcompetition composed of five workouts. Three days after competition, creatine kinase (CK) was 77,590 U/L accompanied by myalgia and abnormal liver function tests, while renal function was normal and this resulted in a diagnosis of rhabdomyolysis. A follow-up examination revealed that her serum level of CK was still elevated to 3034 U/L on day …

BACKGROUND Adult Still's disease (ASD) is a rare systemic inflammatory condition, which commonly presents with the triad of quotidian fevers, rash, and non-specific rheumatologic symptoms such as myalgia and arthralgia. The etiology and pathogenesis are poorly understood and both the clinical presentation and laboratory data are typically nonspecific. As such, the presentation is often confused with infection, other autoimmune processes, and malignancy. CASE REPORT We present a case of a 29-year-old Hispanic female who presented with fever, sore throat, myalgia, and shortness of breath. Initia…

Carnitine palmitoyltransferase-II (CPT-II) deficiency can be detected through newborn screening with tandem mass spectrometry. We report a 4-year-old patient with rhabdomyolysis due to CPT-II deficiency, which was initially missed by newborn screening. The patient presented with a 2-day history of fevers, upper respiratory infection, diffuse myalgia, and tea-colored urine. Her medical history was notable for frequent diffuse myalgia when ill. She was demonstrated to have homozygous mutation c.338C>T, p. S113L in CPT2, which is typically found in the adult-onset, myopathic form of the disease. …

Tumor necrosis factor receptor-associated periodic syndrome (TRAPS) is a dominantly inherited autoinflammatory syndrome that is characterized by recurrent episodes of fever attacks associated with rashes, abdominal pain, myalgia, conjunctivitis, chest pain, and arthralgia. Some patients have severe abdominal pain leading to abdominal surgery. Most reported cases of TRAPS involve patients of European ancestry, but there have been nine reports of patients with TRAPS in Japan. Here, we review these nine case reports. Reported TNFRSF1A gene mutations in these nine index patients were C70S, T61I, C…

In An Earlier Study Ferguson (1969, 1971) noted occupational cramp in 22% of 263 male telegraphists examined in the Sydney office of a large communications undertaking. A further 6% had occupational myalgia, symptoms of which were also present in some subjects with cramp. At the time of that study all the telegraphists examined had been employed in the undertaking for at least seven years, and all had operated morse telegraphy before this mode was fully superseded by keyboard (teleprinter and telex) telegraphy some five years before. In those telegraphists subject of symptoms in operating, the…

A retrospective analysis of 153 patients suffering from progressive systemic sclerosis failed to show any correlation between either onset or worsening of the disease and L-tryptophan ingestion. Only one woman developed typical acrosclerosis without signs of the eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome during exposure to the drug.

Infective endocarditis (IE) may present with rheumatological manifestations such as myalgias, arthralgias, arthritis and back pain. However, muscle inflammation is rare. We present a case of a 68-year-old Hispanic man who presented with 1-month history of tiredness, weight loss, fever, myalgias, muscle weakness and dysphagia to solid food. On physical examination he had severe weakness in the proximal upper and lower extremities, and erythematous eruption involving the upper eyelids, neck and metacarpophalangeal joints. Creatine kinase levels were markedly elevated at 15 809 U/L. MRI of the ri…

Besides the different forms of odontalgia, myalgias of the masticatory muscles are the most frequent noninfectious complaints in the orofacial region. After summarizing the recommendations set forth by the Interdisciplinary Working Group of Orofacial Pain within the German Chapter of the IASP (German Pain Society), we present the current state of knowledge regarding the etiology, diagnosis, and therapeutic options, based on an extensive literature search. A systematic literature search was carried out in PubMed, the Cochrane Library, and the database of the Deutsche Zahnärztliche Zeitschrift. …

Polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) is a chronic inflammatory disorder of unknown etiology which typically presents with symmetric myalgias in the shoulder and pelvic girdles. Other clinical signs include the rapid onset of symptoms and the almost exclusive manifestation in the elderly population. In around 20% of cases, PMR is associated with giant cell arteritis (GCA). However, new imaging techniques suggest that the prevalence of subclinical GCA (e. g. aortitis) in PMR is probably higher. Acute phase reactants like erythrocyte sedimentation rate and c-reactive protein are usually elevated. Myalgia…

Exertional rhabdomyolysis can rapidly progress to acute kidney injury requiring dialysis, even in young healthy athletes. Delayed presentation and inadequate hydration increase risk. Clinicians should suspect rhabdomyolysis in patients with myalgia, dark urine, or oliguria after strenuous exercise, and initiate early hydration and electrolyte monitoring to prevent severe complications.

Botulinum toxin is used to treat pelvic floor tension myalgia; however, its safety profile is poorly understood. We report an ischiorectal fossa abscess after pelvic floor injections of botulinum toxin. Physicians need to be aware of this possible complication, consider alternate injection techniques and antiseptic preparation before injection.

A suspected case of xanthine oxidase deficiency has been further investigated. The patient complained of arthralgia and myalgia. Further studies included histochemical and ultramicroscopic analysis of muscle sarcoplasmic reticulum, and biochemical studies. High levels of xanthine and hypoxanthine were found, while uric acid was absent in the muscle extracts.

Cutaneous symptoms are observed in 25%-60% of polyarteritis nodosa (PN) patients. On the other hand, cutaneous polyarteritis nodosa (CPN) is designated for the cutaneous limited form of PN and demonstrates benign prognosis. However, there has been much debate on whether or not CPN can progress to PN. Although CPN lesions are fundamentally limited to skin, some CPN cases show extracutaneous symptoms such as peripheral neuropathy and myalgia. According to PN diagnostic criteria, a disease with both cutaneous and at least one extracutaneous symptom with appropriate histopathological findings can …
