BACKGROUND: Liver metastasis is the most common cause of death in patients with colorectal cancer (CRC). Phosphatase of regenerating liver-3 induces CRC metastasis by epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition, which promotes CRC cell liver metastasis. Mesenchymal-to-epithelial transition (MET), the opposite of epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition, has been proposed as a mechanism for the establishment of metastatic neoplasms. However, the molecular mechanism of MET remains unclear.
METHODS: Using Immunohistochemistry, western blotting, invasion assays, real-time quantitative PCR, chromatin immunop

BACKGROUND: The incidence of gastric metastasis is 2.6%. Although all primary neoplasms can metastasize to the stomach, most originate from melanoma or breast and lung cancer. Their most common endoscopic appearance is a "volcano-like" polypoid mass covered by normal mucosa that may show a central ulceration. Renal cell carcinoma, clear cell type, is known to spread hematogenously, and isolated metastasis to the stomach is a rare event.
CASE PRESENTATION: In this report, we describe a gastric recurrence of RCC, clear-cell type, in a 80-year-old patient who had undergone nephrectomy 20 years b

INTRODUCTION: Renal clear cell carcinoma (RCCCa) represents 2-3% of the neoplasms in the adult population, and can be metastastatic in up to 30% at the time of diagnosis. In these cases its mortality can be of up to 99% in 5 years, due to the lack of response to current treatments, unless it is a single, surgically resectable metastasis. Currently, there is no explanation for its routes of progression, it even seems to be non existent based on the rare tumor implant sites.
OBJECTIVE: To report unusual metastasis from RCCCa and a review of the literature.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We reviewed ret

Rhabdomyosarcoma is an aggressive neoplasm of primitive mesenchymal cells that have the potential to differentiate into skeletal muscle. Case selection required positive expression of both vimentin and desmin, confirmed by immunohistochemistry, and negative expression of cytokeratin. In this study of 34 young dogs, the average age at time of diagnosis was 16.5 months. The majority of tumors were located in the maxilla (n = 26, 76%), whereas a smaller subset (n = 4, 11%) occurred solely within the mandible. One (2.9%) involved the caudal mandible and maxilla, 1 of 34 (2.9%) involved the maxilla

BACKGROUND: Primary ureteral neoplasms are extremely rare in dogs, and ureteral involvement usually occurs owing to the invasion of renal and bladder tumors.
CASE DESCRIPTION: This case report describes a 12-year-old intact male mixed-breed dog referred to a private clinic with a six-month history of abdominal distention. A physical examination revealed mild abdominal pain. Hematological tests detected normocytic-normochromic anemia (hematocrit 33.6% [reference interval-RI: 37%-55%], red blood cells 4.93 M/µl [RI: 5.5-8.5 M/µl], and hemoglobin 12.4 g/dl [RI: 12-18.0 g/dl]). Extragastrointestinal stromal tumors (EGISTs) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms, which develop in the retroperitoneum, mesentery, and omentum, lacking continuity to the stomach or intestines. Authors hereby present a female patient with a large heterogeneous abdominal mass as a case of an omental EGIST. A 46-year-old woman was referred to our hospital due to an insidious enlargement and colicky pain in the right iliac fossa. Abdominal palpation revealed a voluminous, freely mobile, and non-pulsatile mesoabdominal bulge expanding to the hypogastrium. On exploratory midline laparotomy, the tumor wa

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) is a malignant mesenchymal neoplasm described in humans, dogs, and cats. A hallmark of diagnosis for GISTs is positive immunohistochemical labelling with c-Kit (CD117). The differentiation of GIST from other mesenchymal neoplasms of the gastrointestinal tract is pivotal to allow for initiation of appropriate treatment. In humans, cystic GIST has been described, though this has not been reported in dogs. In humans, the cystic form of GIST has been associated with a favorable prognosis. In the present paper, we report a case of multilocular cysti

Hyalinizing clear cell carcinoma (HCCC) is a rare, low-grade neoplasm accounting for approximately 1% of salivary gland neoplasms. Histologically, it is characterized by a monomorphous population of clear cells arranged in sheets, nests, or cords, lacking ductal structures. Until recently, clear cell carcinoma of the oral cavity (OC) represented a diagnosis of exclusion when other head and neck pathologic entities such as epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma or mucoepidermoid carcinoma could be ruled out, making definitive diagnosis by light microscopy and immunoprofiling a challenge. As a resul

AIMS: Uncommon cases of lung metastasis from different types of uterine neoplasms with a long tumour-free interval after hysterectomy are reported.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Four cases were retrieved from our surgical pathology archives. Case 1 was a 68-year-old woman who had three pulmonary nodules 23 years after hysterectomy for low-grade endometrial stromal sarcoma (LGESS). The nodules obtained with video-assisted thoracic surgeries were consistent with metastatic LGESS. Case 2 was a 36-year-old woman who had numerous bilateral pulmonary nodules 6 years after hysterectomy for leiomyoma. A trans

Vulvar neoplasms represent four percent of all gynecological cancers. While most cases of vulvar neoplasms are benign, two percent of patients present with malignant disease. We present the case of a 37-year-old premenopausal female who presented to an outside institution with a lump in her left vulva, which had progressively enlarged to the size of an egg. A wide local excision of the left vulva was performed, and the pathology revealed a high-grade sarcoma, not otherwise specified (NOS), with negative margins. Imaging showed enlarged bilateral external iliac lymph nodes, likely metastatic. A

Adult granulosa cell tumor (AGCT) is a low-grade malignant neoplasm with a significant propensity for late recurrence and metastasis. Almost all AGCTs are composed of cells with bland nuclear features and even when these tumors recur or metastasize, the nuclear features are almost always low-grade. We report 5 cases of AGCT in patients aged 37 to 88 years composed of areas of typical AGCT with low-grade morphology admixed with areas of high-grade morphology, with marked nuclear atypia, often with bizarre multinucleate cells and high mitotic activity; this is the first reported series of high-g

CONTEXT: SDHB mutations are found in an increasing number of neoplasms, most notably in paragangliomas and pheochromocytomas (PPGLs). SDHB-PPGLs are slow-growing tumors, but ∼50% of them may develop metastasis. The molecular basis of metastasis in these tumors is a long-standing and unresolved problem. Thus, a better understanding of the biology of metastasis is needed.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify gene methylation changes relevant for metastatic SDHB-PPGLs.
DESIGN: We performed genome-wide profiling of DNA methylation in diverse clinical and genetic PPGL subtypes, and validated p

Between January 1, 1976, and January 1, 1986, we treated sixty-three patients who had histologically proved squamous-cell carcinoma that originated in a pre-existing scar or sinus of an extremity. In 49 per cent of the patients, metastases to regional lymph nodes either were present when the patient was first seen or subsequently developed. The age and sex of the patient, the etiology of the original scar, and the duration of illness bore no relationship to the result. The most significant factor in predicting the outcome was the grade of the tumor: for grade-I (low-grade) lesions, the inciden

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is the most common malignant neoplasm in the female population. However, stomach is a rare site for metastasis, and can show up many years after initial diagnosis and treatment of the primary tumor.
AIM: Analyze a case series of this tumor and propose measures that can diagnose it with more precocity.
METHODS: Were analyzed 12 patients with secondary gastric tumors. Immunohistochemistry has demonstrated that primary tumor was breast cancer. We retrieved information of age, histological type, interval between diagnosis of the primary breast cancer and its metastases,

Warthin tumour is a benign salivary gland neoplasm strongly associated with smoking and known for avid 18F-FDG uptake. We report a 53-year-old male chronic smoker presenting with tinnitus and ear pain. A resected brain mass demonstrated metastatic carcinoma (TTF-1 positive, CK7 diffuse). 18F-FDG PET/CT revealed a moderately 18F-FDG -avid left upper lobe pulmonary nodule and a small 18F-FDG -avid intraparotid lesion. Given the smoking history and imaging characteristics, Warthin tumour was favoured over metastasis. Lung biopsy confirmed moderately to poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma; paroti

Mammary-like adenocarcinoma originating in the vulva is extremely rare, even rarer when metastasized at diagnosis. It may arise from the primitive mammary ridge or mammary-like glands of the skin in the anogenital region. We report a case of a 47-year-old woman with diffuse bone metastasis and a vulvar lesion compatible with mammary-type adenocarcinoma, with no evidence of primary breast cancer. Systemic treatment followed protocols for hormone receptor (HR)-positive, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-negative advanced breast cancer, using an aromatase inhibitor and ribociclib, r

Pheochromocytoma is a neuroendocrine neoplasm that originates from chromaffin cells of the adrenal medulla. Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a proliferative disease of histiocyte-like cells, often associated with activating mutations of the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway. We present a case of a 49-year-old male with a history of pheochromocytoma, which metastasized to the inferior vena cava eight years after left adrenalectomy. At the same time, it was found that the pheochromocytoma in the metastasis was complicated with LCH, a combination that has not been previously r

Low-grade fibromyxoid sarcoma (LGFMS) is a rare malignant spindle cell neoplasm that characteristically involves the trunk and extremities. The bland morphological appearance of the tumor makes it notoriously difficult for the pathologist to identify in routine microscopic sections especially when the tumor is located at unconventional sites. This ensues significant therapeutic implications as the tumor is known for long-standing distant metastasis. This case involves a 48-year-old lady who was diagnosed with this tumor at an extremely uncommon site as maxilla. The case report highlights the i

Epithelioid sarcoma is a rare soft tissue neoplasm of uncertain differentiation that typically affects the distal extremities. Primary orbital epithelioid sarcoma is rare, and no reports exist characterizing metastases of this tumor to the orbit and ocular adnexa. In this article, the authors describe a rare case of eyelid metastasis in a 47-year-old man with epithelioid sarcoma of the right fibula diagnosed 16 months earlier who was otherwise doing well on the adjuvant tazemetostat therapy. In addition, the authors perform a retrospective review of cases of primary orbital epithelioid sarcoma
