RATIONALE: Extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma (EMC) is a rare malignant neoplasm of which intracranial EMC is the rarest.
PATIENT CONCERNS: We present an unusual case report of a 41-year-old woman who was sent to the emergency department for a sudden headache and other symptoms related to increased intracranial pressure.
INTERVENTIONS: Emergent CT revealed an occupying lesion in the left cerebellum with surrounding edema. A complete surgical excision of the lesion through a transcortical approach was performed. After the operation, this patient received adjuvant radiotherapy and temozolomid

Tumour-induced osteomalacia is a paraneoplastic syndrome wherein bone is affected by a hormone from a tumour that causes renal phosphate wasting and hypophosphataemia. Here, we present the case of a 31-year-old man who has been suffering from generalised bone pains and a spine deformity that led to loss of height. Pertinent findings are low serum phosphorus, low vitamin D and decreased bone mineral density. These findings led to a diagnosis of osteomalacia. However, the finding of an oral mass raised some questions as to what role it plays in the patient's disease. It was suspected that the or

CONTEXT: Tumor-induced osteomalacia is curable if the tumors can be totally excised. However, when the tumors are present in locations that make surgery disproportionately risky, the need for less invasive strategies like radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is realized.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We describe three patients with suspected tumor-induced osteomalacia who were treated in our department between 2006 and 2013 with tumors in surgically difficult locations and were subjected to single or multiple sessions of RFA. The response was documented in terms of symptomatic improvement, phosphorus normal

Critical evaluation of the anti-complement immunofluorescence (ACIF) test for Epstein-Barr virus-associated nuclear antigen (EBNA) in known EBV-associated cell lines was carried out. The ACIF procedure, in which the cell smears were thoroughly air-dried and fixed with carbon tetrachloride (for 15 min at room termperature), provided reproducible staining results with minimum variations. The fixed smears coulb be stored for at least 5 weeks at minus 80 degrees C without loss of reactivity. On the basis of the above evaluation, a total of 59 human cell lines, which had unknown or uncertain associ

The radiographic appearance of the breast on mammography varies among women, and reflects variations in breast tissue composition and the different X-ray attenuation characteristics of these tissues. Fat is radiologically lucent and appears dark on a mammogram. Connective and epithelial tissues are radiologically dense and appear light. These variations in appearance are commonly described as the percentage of the breast image that is radiologically dense, or as percent mammographic density (PMD). There is now extensive evidence that PMD is a risk factor for breast cancer, with a 4- to 6-fold

OBJECTIVES: Juvenile angiofibroma is a benign, non-encapsulated neoplasm, consisting of vascular and connective tissue. Its main feature is a local malignancy. In its clinical course it destroys adjoining structures, without metastasizing. It appears rarely, and is mainly found in boys at puberty. Among theories about the aetiology of juvenile angiofibroma, we must consider a haematoma-like lesion, an angioma with an extended fibrous component, or type of inflammatory allergic polyp. In the development of the lesion the participation of hormonal disorders on the pituitary gland-gonad axis is a

Due to its superior tissue resolution, magnetic resonance imaging has become the modality of choice for assessing pathologies of soft tissues, joints, cartilage, and bone marrow. This is also true in the pediatric population. This article reviews magnetic resonance imaging appearances and techniques for a variety of congenital abnormalities and acquired conditions including posttraumatic, infectious, inflammatory, ischemic, metabolic, benign, and malignant processes.

Primary cutaneous osteosarcoma is an exceedingly rare malignant mesenchymal neoplasm of the skin which produces bone, osteoid, or chondroid material and does not involve the underlying bone. The most common site for extraskeletal osteosarcoma is in the deep soft tissues of the thigh, upper extremities, and retroperitoneum; however, it may occur anywhere in the body. Involvement of the skin is rare and when it does occur it is more commonly due to metastatic disease rather than a primary malignancy. Only 16 cases of primary cutaneous osteosarcoma have been described in the literature. We report

In human placentation, events of implantation and early blastocyst development are mediated by fetal trophoblastic cells which penetrate into the maternal endometrium and myometrium. Although highly regulated in its biological behavior, trophoblast simulates a malignant neoplasm by virtue of invading the uterine wall and uterine spiral arteries and by embolizing throughout the systemic circulation. This process is at least in part dependant on the regulated production of proteolytic enzymes to degrade extracellular matrix. The most abundant extracellular protein is connective tissue type (inte

One variety of sarcoma of the central nervous system (CNS) has been referred to under such synonyms as perithelial sarcoma, microglioma, and reticulum cell sarcoma. A case of diffuse involvement of the CNS is reported and the author believes that the tumour is a reticulum cell sarcoma because: (1) in addition to involvement of the CNS, lesions characteristic of a diffuse lymphomatous process were present in extraneural sites; (2) silver carbonate impregnation of the tumour cells was demonstrated. This tinctorial property has been reported as characteristic of microgliomas but has been shown to

Metastases in the oral cavity are rare and frequently associated with widespread disease and poor prognosis. Clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) is the most common subtype of renal cell carcinoma (RCC), known for its propensity for metastatic spread. The diagnosis of oral metastases from ccRCC is challenging, especially when the patient has no history of primary neoplasm. Herein, we reported a rare metastatic ccRCC in a 58-year-old female presenting clinically as a painless nodule on the tongue mimicking a benign lesion. Microscopically, the tumor showed a proliferation of clear cells orga

BackgroundLarge-scale surveys of complementary traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) use in pediatric cancer patients are lacking. The aim of our study was to investigate the use of TCM in pediatric cancer patients.MethodsWe analyzed cancer patients younger than 18 years (n = 12 965) who were registered in the National Health Insurance Research Database in Taiwan between 2001 and 2011. Patients were categorized into TCM or non-TCM users based on their use of TCM.ResultsIn Taiwan, 8086 (62.4%) children with cancer sought TCM treatment at some point. Children in older age groups, including school-a

AIMS: To report a previously undescribed phenomenon of incidentally detected microscopic proliferations of sex cord cells, often mimicking adult granulosa cell tumour or sex cord tumour with annular tubules, in extraovarian locations.
METHODS AND RESULTS: The six cases were in patients aged 23-58 years. The proliferations were located in the fallopian tube in three cases, and in paraovarian connective tissues, the pelvic side wall, and appendiceal serosa (one case each). Microscopically, they were typically composed of well-demarcated nests of regular cells with round/ovoid vesicular nuclei,

Thymoma is an uncommon and slow-growing neoplasm. It is derived from thymic epithelial cells and comprises about 20% to 30% of mediastinal masses in adults, but only about 1% in pediatric patients. Patients usually present with mass-associated respiratory symptoms, superior vena cava syndrome, or paraneoplastic syndrome including myasthenia gravis, pure red cell aplasia, or acquired hypogammaglobulinemia, and connective tissue disorders. Due to the limited number of cases, knowledge, and experience with thymoma in pediatric patients, the diagnosis and treatment are very challenging for this ag

We describe two prepubertal girls with oncogenic rickets. The first patient, 9 years of age, presented with recent-onset lower-extremity pain. The second girl, presented at 4 years of age following a 9-month period of muscle weakness, bone pain, and poor linear growth. Laboratory analyses in both patients revealed hypophosphatemia and hyperphosphaturia; elevated circulating alkaline phosphatase activity was present in one of them. Radiographic evidence of a generalized rachitic process was evident in both cases. Computerized tomography of the paranasal sinuses and facial bones in patient 1 rev

OBJECTIVE: Malignant chest wall tumors are rare neoplasms. Resection with wide-free margins is an important prognostic factor, and massive chest wall resection and reconstruction are often necessary. A recent case series of 20 consecutive patients is reported in order to find any possible correlation between tumor histology, extent of resection, type of reconstruction, and adjuvant treatment with short- and long-term outcomes.
METHODS: Twenty patients were submitted to chest wall resection and reconstruction for malignant chest wall neoplasms between 2006 and 2014. The mean age (ten males) wa

Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is typically caused by phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor (PMT) that secretes the phosphaturic hormone, fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF23), resulting in decreased phosphate reabsorption in kidneys, hypophosphatemia, and finally osteomalacia. Rare cases of malignant tumor manifesting with TIO other than PMT had been reported, although in most of these reports, except one, circulating FGF23 levels were not evaluated and tissue expressing of FGF23 was not confirmed. In this article, we report a case of TIO in a patient with pulmonary small cell carcinoma with liver m

Paraneoplastic symptoms, caused by a malignancy, but not directly related to invasion by the tumor or its metastases, are the result of a wide variety of tumor-derived biologic mediators like hormones, peptides, antibodies, cytotoxic lymphocytes, autocrine and paracrine mediators. Systemic inflammatory rheumatic diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, scleroderma or dermatomyositis, may increase the risk for the development of malignancies, predominantly lymphoproliferative disorders. Immunosuppressive drugs and biological agents may also be carcinogenic. However,

OBJECTIVE: Trigeminal sensory neuropathy is an uncommon but often significant orofacial symptom. There are few detailed descriptions of the problem in the dental literature. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical presentation and management of a cohort of patients presenting with anesthesia/paresthesia affecting one or more divisions of the trigeminal nerve unrelated to any identifiable traumatic cause.
STUDY DESIGN: Nine patients with trigeminal neuropathy were examined. Each patient underwent a standard protocol of examination and hematologic, serologic, radiologic, and histopat
