Feline Papillomatosis.

Different types of feline papillomaviruses (PVs) are associated with a variety of skin lesions and neoplasia, such as papillomas and cell carcinomas, but the virus can also be found in healthy skin. In this review, the European Advisory Board on Cat Diseases (ABCD), a scientifically independent board of veterinary experts on feline infectious diseases from 11 European Countries, discusses the current knowledge of feline PV infections. Cats most likely become infected through lesions or abrasions of the skin. Most PV infections remain asymptomatic. Besides cat-specific PVs, DNA sequences most c

Secondary Sinonasal Malignancies After Retinoblastoma.

PURPOSE: Retinoblastoma (RB) is the most common intraocular tumor in childhood. Survivors of RB are at risk of developing secondary malignancies. Prior radiotherapy substantially increases the risk of malignancy in the orbit, brain, and nasal cavities. The authors report 2 new cases of secondary sino-orbital malignancies in RB survivors who underwent radiotherapy during early childhood. A literature review on secondary sinonasal and orbital malignancies in RB is presented. METHODS A: case series and literature review of relevant publications on the topic was performed, with appropriate data e

Outcome and complications of extended cranial-base resection requiring microvascular free-tissue transfer.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the complications of extensive cranial-base resection requiring free-tissue transfer (FTT) and the effect of these resections on local control and survival among patients with malignant neoplasms of the skull base. BACKGROUND: Before the advent of FTT, cranial-base surgery was often limited by our inability to adequately repair defects comprising communication between the central nervous system and upper aerodigestive tract. The use of FTT in cranial-base resections was therefore assessed to determine whether the improved procedure (ie, extensive resections) would imp

Clinical impact of PD-L1 and PD-1 expression in squamous cell cancer of the vulva.

PURPOSE: Squamous cell carcinoma of the vulva (SQCV) is the fifth most common cancer in women and accounts for about 5% of all genital cancers in women. The PD-L1 signaling pathway is activated in many malignant neoplasms and its blockade enhances anti-cancer immunity. The aim of our study was to examine the protein expression of PD-L1 and PD-1 in squamous cell cancer of the vulva, its correlations with clinicopathologic features and prognostic value. METHODS: Patients with SQCV treated in one institution were used for the analyses. PD-L1 immunohistochemistry was performed on 4 µm-thick secti

Galectin-9 expression links to malignant potential of cervical squamous cell carcinoma.

PURPOSE: Galectin-9 (Gal-9) induces adhesion and aggregation of certain cell types and can be a prognostic factor in the patients with melanoma and breast cancer. We assessed the experiments to resolve whether Gal-9 expression in cervical neoplasm links to malignant potential of cervical squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) cells. METHODS: Gal-9 expression was examined with immunohistochemical techniques in 23 normal cervical squamous epithelia, 17 cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), and 38 cervical SCC compared to E-cadherin. CIN was divided into low-grade and high-grade squamous intraepithel

Clinicopathological evaluation of carcinoma cuniculatum: a variant of oral squamous cell carcinoma.

Carcinoma cuniculatum (CC) is a rare neoplasm of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and remains a histopathological challenge to pathologists because of its low incidence and unique architecture. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to illustrate the clinicopathological findings and biological behavior about this distinctive lesion. Clinical and follow-up information were retrieved from medical charts, and histopathological analyses were performed. Our series included 15 cases of CC, and the study included seven men and eight women, age 44-92. The tongue and mandible were the most frequen

INI1 and GLUT-1 expression in epithelioid sarcoma and its cutaneous neoplastic and nonneoplastic mimics.

The morphological features of epithelioid sarcoma may closely mimic those of epithelial neoplasms, such as squamous cell carcinoma, mesenchymal tumors, such as benign fibrous histiocytoma, and nonneoplastic lesions, such as granuloma annulare. Immunohistochemistry, particularly for epithelial markers and CD34, thus plays a valuable role in the differential diagnosis of epithelioid sarcoma. However, some epithelioid sarcomas may show very focal or even absent expression of such markers and may be difficult to distinguish from various morphological mimics. There is therefore continued interest i

Differential diagnostic value of CD5 and CD117 expression in thoracic tumors: a large scale study of 1465 non-small cell lung cancer cases.

BACKGROUND: Thoracic pathologists are frequently faced with tissue specimens from intrathoracic/mediastinal tumors. Specifically the differentiation between thymic and pulmonary squamous cell carcinomas (SqCC) can be challenging. In order to clarify the differential diagnostic value of CD5 and CD117 in this setting, we performed a large scale expression study of both markers in 1465 non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cases. METHODS: Tissue microarrays of formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded resection specimens of 1465 NSCLC were stained with antibodies against CD117 and CD5. Positivity of both ma

Cytologic features of stratified mucin producing intraepithelial lesion of the cervix--a case report.

Stratified mucin-producing intraepithelial lesion (SMILE) of the cervix is a human papilloma virus (HPV) associated high grade intraepithelial columnar cell neoplasm that is thought to arise from the reserve cells of the transformation zone. It is composed of immature stratified cells that display intracytoplasmic mucin and is commonly associated with high grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL), adenocarcinoma in situ (AIS), and invasive carcinoma. Here, we describe the cytologic features of SMILE and discuss its pitfalls in cervical cytology. A 51-year-old woman was diagnosed with SMILE
