Challenging stigma and attitudes towards ECT via an educational video.

While electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is an effective therapeutic modality for the treatment of mental illness, negative attitudes and stigma exist about ECT in the general community and even within health services. Investigating interventions that improve the attitudes of health professionals towards ECT is beneficial as this reduces stigma and increases the acceptability of ECT for consumers. The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the change in attitude of nursing graduates and medical students towards ECT by watching an educational video. The secondary aim was to compare health profe

Inter-agency collaboration: teaching breast self-examination to black women.

Excessive breast cancer mortality and limited use of mammography among black women point to a need for breast cancer education and increased use of breast self-examination (BSE) and other screening procedures. The Illinois Cancer Council (ICC), a consortial comprehensive cancer center, and the Chicago Chapter of the National Black Nurses' Association (CCNBNA) developed and piloted an educational project to increase black women's knowledge about breast cancer and their use of BSE and other screening methods. This paper describes the steps leading up to this collaborative effort, the procedures

Health beliefs related to diarrhea in Haitian children: building transcultural nursing knowledge.

Regardless of where they live or under what circumstances, mothers throughout the world seem to have a compelling desire to provide the best possible health care for their children (Huston, 1979). Haitian mothers living in the Dominican Republic were no exception. The health beliefs and practices of these mothers related primarily to diarrhea among their children which demonstrated a concern and resourcefulness that is commendable. The results of this study clearly indicate the importance of transcultural nurses conducting culturally relevant research as a basis to develop sound health program

The Potential Mediating Role of the Number of Remaining Teeth in the Association Between Age and Oropharyngeal Dysphagia Risk Among Community-Dwelling Older Adults.

BACKGROUND: Oropharyngeal dysphagia is a common issue among community-dwelling older adults and is associated with adverse health outcomes. This study examined whether the number of remaining teeth mediates the association between age and oropharyngeal dysphagia (OD) risk. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 413 community-dwelling older adults (≥ 60 years) recruited from community health centers in Sulawesi, Indonesia. OD risk was assessed using a validated screening questionnaire. Oral examinations were conducted by trained nurses. Mediation analysis estimated the indirect, direct,

Nia Imani Model of Care's Impact on Homeless African-American Women.

This qualitative study assessed the impact of the Nia Imani model of care on homeless African-American women, many of whom abused drugs, experienced interpersonal violence, and faced other challenges when seeking to improve their lives and health. Nia Imani Family, Inc., is Milwaukee, Wisconsin's, only long-term transitional living facility. Grounded in Black feminist thought, our study included focus group interviews with 39 women who had lived at Nia Imani, and successfully completed its programs; and one individual interview with the founder, who had also experienced homelessness (N=40). Public Health Nurses in Israel: A Case Study on a Quality Improvement Project of Nurse's Work Life.

Public health nurses (PHNs) working in Well Baby Clinic in Israel's Haifa district were voicing great distress to inspectors-the impossibility of meeting their workload, feeling overwhelmed, poor physical, and technological conditions. They were feeling tired and frustrated and burn-out was rising. The district's nursing management took the decision, together with Tel Aviv University's nursing research unit, to conduct a quality improvement project based on issues that arose from meetings with focus groups on the nurses' difficulties. This paper is a case study of a quality improvement project

Nurses' assessments of the work environment, organisational culture and work arrangements: a cross-sectional study of Estonian hospitals in 1999, 2009 and 2021.

BACKGROUND: Nurses play a vital role in patient care, and their perceptions of their work environment are crucial for healthcare quality. A supportive and well-resourced work environment enhances the quality of care and increases employee commitment. The physical environment directly influences nurses' well-being and efficiency, while a culture that fosters collaboration and communication is essential for improving patient outcomes and ensuring high-quality care. This study aimed to analyse nurses' assessments of the work environment, organisational culture and work organisation over three dec

Developing standardized patient clinical simulations to apply concepts of interdisciplinary collaboration.

Interdisciplinary collaboration and interprofessional education (IPE) are essential for transforming health care. Students in nurse practitioner (NP) programs have limited exposure to IPE. Simulated clinical experiences, based on social learning theory, provide a safe and realistic environment to expose NP students to interdisciplinary collaboration as a step toward developing IPE. Faculty at a large university school of nursing developed a formative standardized patient experience to provide NP students with two opportunities to synthesize a patient assessment, to share patient problem-solvin

Cultural Competency and Implicit Bias: Decreasing Barriers to Native American and First Nation Mental Health Care.

Indigenous populations have different perceptions of mental health compared to Western medicine. Implicit bias and limited cultural awareness among healthcare professionals contribute to disparities in care, misdiagnosis, and disengagement. This article examines how historical trauma, spiritual perspectives, and systemic barriers hinder access to care for the Indigenous population. Implicit bias training can mitigate unconscious assumptions in nursing practice, influencing care delivery at the meso level and contributing to broader institutional change and health equity at the macro level. Case studies 1-3: leg ulcers.

Case studies are presented here by a tissue viability nurse consultant and an advanced podiatrist demonstrating the use of ChloraSolv in clinical practice. The first set of cases is from a community setting, where the tissue viability nurse and district nurse successfully used the product to fully debride hard-to-heal leg ulcers in patients who mostly had been unable to tolerate other forms of debridement. The second set illustrates its use in a podiatry clinic, where the gel removed dry, adherent slough. 'These case studies show that ChloraSolv can be used by any health professional to achiev

Implementing targeted cervical cancer screening videos at the point of care.

OBJECTIVE: To develop and implement educational videos to improve cervical cancer health literacy for patients within a safety net healthcare system. METHODS: Testimonial-style videos were developed with the goal of describing the Pap test to low literacy patients and motivating them to participate in regular cervical cancer screening. Nurses were trained to use the electronic medical record to identify patients due or past due for a Pap test according to the current screening guidelines. Educating Health Care Providers in Treatment of Patients With Ebola Virus Disease.

Nurses manage patients with common infectious diseases by following institutional guidelines based on expert advice, evidence in the literature, and a wealth of experience. Today nurses are challenged to provide care to patients with multidrug-resistant organisms and virulent infectious diseases such as Ebola virus disease. Management of some patients with virulent infectious diseases occurs in the context of minimal experience with the pathogen, course of infection, diagnostics, nursing care, and treatment. Limited evidence exists in the US or international literature about direct nursing car

Effects of a Nurse-Led Telehealth Self-care Promotion Program on the Quality of Life of Community-Dwelling Older Adults: Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, telehealth has become a common channel for health care professionals to use to promote health and provide distance care. COVID-19 has further fostered the widespread use of this new technology, which can improve access to care while protecting the community from exposure to infection by direct personal contact, and reduce the time and cost of traveling for both health care users and providers. This is especially true for community-dwelling older adults who have multiple chronic diseases and require frequent hospital visits. Nurses are globally recognized as health
