Cryptosporidium oocysts were detected microscopically in the concentrated faecal smears (stained by modified kinyoun's acid fast stain) in 13 out of 100 (13 per cent) cases of acute diarrhoea (AD < 2 weeks duration), 7 out of 50 (14 per cent) cases of chronic diarrhoea (CD > 2 weeks duration) and none in 50 age matched controls. The grades of malnutrition of the cases and controls were calculated by the weight for age criteria and the immune status assessed by the levels of serum immunoglobulins and SIgA in duodenal fluids. In 45 patients with chronic digestive tract diseases (gastric and/or duodenal peptic ulcer, cholecystolithiasis, conditions after gastrectomy and cholecystectomy) the biochemical parameters serving as indicators of the nutritional status of the organism (Hb, Bc, Fe, Ca, alkaline phosphatase) were determined. In the group with postgastrectomy syndrome the serum calcium level was decreased. The other parameters were normal in all groups of patients.

The nutritional status of 121 psychiatric patients over the age of 60 years was examined on admission in a general psychiatric hospital. Before admission all patients were living independently. They were admitted directly from their homes. We found that the older psychiatric patient is evidently at risk for malnutrition. A cross-sectional study of dental caries in the primary teeth as a function of nutritional status was conducted on 1481 children one to 13 years old in Lima, Perú. Forty-one percent of the children were found to be chronically malnourished (stunted), 3% were acutely malnourished (wasted), and 5% were both stunted and wasted. Previous studies have shown that salicylates and protein-calorie malnutrition independently compromise maturation and growth of infants. In the present study, pregnant rats were fed normal-and low-protein diets with and without aspirinlike drug treatments. The effects of a low-protein (8 percent) diet included decreases in total serum proteins in both dams and their offspring. Decreases in weight gains, serum albumin and globulin levels, and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) concentrations were detected in dams fed the low-protein diet without evidence of changes of these variables in their offspring.
