BACKGROUND: Open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of displaced intra-articular calcaneal fracture (DIACF) by extensile lateral approach is widely used but is technically challenging. In this study, the learning curve for ORIF of DIACF by extensile lateral approach was investigated.
METHODS: Between March 2014 and July 2018, 45 cases consisting of 40 patients underwent operative treatment for DIACF by the extensile lateral approach performed in all instances by a single surgeon. A moving average and cumulative summation control chart (CUSUM) were used for learning curve analyses. Operati

Proximal humeral fractures are common injuries with increasing incidence, particularly in the aging population. Nondisplaced or minimally displaced fractures can be treated conservatively whereas surgical fixation is usually indicated in the cases of displaced fractures. Various surgical options have been used for treatment of these fractures. Good outcomes have been reported with use of the Proximal Humeral Internal Locking System (PHILOS plate; Synthes, Zuchwil, Switzerland) as the implant of choice. However many complications have been reported, including varus malalignment, excessive retro

Combined fracture neck femur with anterior dislocation of the head of femur is a very rare injury with little resources available in the literature. This case report describes a case that was treated by open reduction and internal fixation with 2-year follow-up showing good radiological and functional outcome. Functional evaluation was done according to Merle d'Aubigné score modified by Matta JM, which takes into account the presence of pain, ability to walk and joint range of motion. The measured functional score was 15 points out of a maximum of 18, signifying a good postoperative result. Ea

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: To report on the surgical treatment of intra-articular calcaneal fractures by open reduction and internal fixation with a calcaneal locking compression plate (LCP) from an extended lateral approach, and to retrospectively analyze the mid-term results in a group of patients treated by this technique.
MATERIAL: In the period from August 2005 till March 2007, a total of 49 patients with 61 calcaneal fractures were treated. Of these, 11 (18 %) were treated conservatively. Reduction combined with Kirschner-wire fixation was used in four fractures (6.6 %). Open reduction with

Thirty-six fractures of the radial head were evaluated following treatment with four different techniques: open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF), excision, silastic replacement, and non-operative management. Clinical assessment included calculation of the Clinical Performance Index based on parameters for motion, stability, pain, and daily function, as well as radiographic evaluation for fracture type (Mason) and the development of degenerative changes. Further assessment included isometric strength measurements for elbow flexion, extension, pronation, supination, and grip. Range of moti

BACKGROUND: Studies comparing arthroscopic surgery with open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) for posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) tibial avulsion fracture have exploded in recent years; however, the results are not consistent. This meta-analysis aimed to summarize the efficacy and safety profile of arthroscopic surgery and ORIF in patients with PCL tibial avulsion fracture.
METHODS: Relevant studies were searched across the Web of Science, PubMed, EMBASE, Wan Fang, CNKI, and VIP databases. The standardized mean difference (SMD) or odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) was pool

INTRODUCTION: Isolated ulnar shaft fractures are uncommon injuries but are prone to developing delayed union. Delayed union of such fractures is a well-recognized complication, regardless of the type of treatment. The standard treatment for this complication initially involves observation, and if non-union develops, it is followed by internal fixation with a compression plate, combined with biological stimulation using an autologous iliac crest bone graft. Recently, extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) has been proposed as a non-operative alternative for the treatment of delayed union. The

BACKGROUND: The optimal surgical technique for treating tibial plateau fractures remains controversial. This study aimed to compare the outcomes of arthroscopy-assisted reduction and internal fixation (ARIF) to those of open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) in treating tibial plateau fractures.
METHODS: This systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to compare surgical outcomes between ARIF versus ORIF for patients with tibial plateau fractures. Relevant studies, comprising randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and non-RCTs, were identified through searches in Cochrane CENTRAL, P

Pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) is a rare condition characterized by the development of aseptic, non-healing skin ulcers. Any skin trauma, such as a surgical incision, can trigger an outbreak of lesions. Our case and literature review show that a physician should consider PG in every event of a non-healing, aseptic wound after surgery. The treatment of PG requires collaboration within a multidisciplinary team and immunosuppressive therapy is the first line of treatment, while surgical interventions should be avoided in the active stage of PG.

BACKGROUND: The open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) was a standard treatment approach for fracture at distal humerus intercondylar, whereas the optimal way before ORIF remains inconclusive. We, therefore, performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the efficacy and safety of olecranon osteotomy vs. triceps-sparing approach for patients with distal humerus intercondylar fracture.
METHODS: The electronic searches were systematically performed in PubMed, EmBase, Cochrane library, and Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure from initial inception till December 2019. The pr

BACKGROUND: To date, no meta-analysis has been performed on the efficacy of fibular allograft augmentation for the management of proximal humerus fractures. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the radiographic and clinical outcomes of proximal humerus fractures treated with a locking compression plate (LCP) with or without fibular allograft augmentation.
METHODS: The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, the Cochrane Register of Controlled Trials, PubMed, MEDLINE, Web of Science, and SCOPUS were queried in June of 2021 for literature comparing the radiographic and clinical outcomes f

INTRODUCTION: Ankle fractures are common in the elderly population. Surgical fixation is technically challenging and often results in complications due to high rates of osteoporosis and vascular disease. Open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) often requires prolonged periods of non-weight bearing increasing the risks of complications. Tibiotalocalcaneal (TTC) nailing has been suggested as an alternative to ORIF which allows immediate weight bearing, and is suggested to result in fewer complications. This study aims to compare the two surgical techniques in the elderly population with ankl

We report a case of fracture of the tuberosity of the fifth metatarsal which was managed by tension band wiring and bone grafting. It was complicated by symptomatic fibrosis of the operated site involving the cubometatarsal joint, peroneus brevis tendon, peroneus tertius tendon and the long extensor tendon to the fifth toe. This was successfully managed by arthroscopic lysis of the involved joint and tendons.

This case illustrates the treatment of a stiff shoulder following open reduction and internal fixation of a three-part fracture of the proximal humerus. Motion could not be improved with physical therapy or with manipulation under general anesthesia. Arthroscopic subscapularis tenolysis provided a dramatic increase in range of motion. The unique pathological findings may render such cases refractory to manipulation because of thick unyielding scar tissue. In such cases, arthroscopic subscapularis tenolysis may provide the only means of improving the final range of motion.

PURPOSE: Measures directed at infection prevention, particularly perioperative systemic antibiotic prophylaxis, have received widespread implementation and are considered a standard of care for patients undergoing operative management of fractures, especially with implant use. This study aimed to review the microbiology profile of patients with fracture-related infections (FRIs) in a sub-Saharan African country in order to establish the necessity or otherwise of Gram-negative cover in the selection of antibiotics for perioperative prophylaxis.
METHODOLOGY: This study retrospectively reviewed

INTRODUCTION: Distal radius fractures represent up to one in every sixth treated fracture. The majority of these are intra-articular and require operative management. Many recent studies advocate for the use of volar plating fixation. Following fixation, most patients attend the fracture clinic at 2 and 6 weeks post-operatively and may get repeat imaging at both visits, resulting in longer wait times and repeat exposure to radiation. Revision surgery is however rarely performed in the 2- to 6-week period, raising the question of the necessity of plain film at 2 weeks.
AIM: Improve patient sat
