Health care resources and costs associated with delivering gene therapy for hemophilia in clinical practice.

BACKGROUND: The debate around the cost-effectiveness of gene therapy for hemophilia has largely centered on its price (€1-€3.5 million per individual). While previous studies have explored care organization for gene therapy delivery, none have evaluated the potential resource utilization and associated costs in a real-world setting. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to estimate the health care resources and costs of delivering gene therapy for hemophilia in clinical practice. METHODS: We conducted a bottom-up microcosting study and constructed a process map outlining each step of care. Data on re

Musculoskeletal disorders, associated factors, and literature review for intervention according to gender.

INTRODUCTION: The relationship of risk factors with musculoskeletal disorders and their intervention is a topic of interest, given their prevalence among workers. Thus, analyzing risk factors from approaches such as the gender perspective may be an alternative. OBJECTIVES: To analyze risk factors in a health entity with a high prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders in upper limbs and to describe possible intervention measures according to scientific evidence, from a gender perspective. METHODS: This is an analytical study. A questionnaire was applied to 93 workers on demographic aspects, pr

Understanding adaptive tasks in cardiac rehabilitation among patients with acute myocardial infarction: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: While Cardiac Rehabilitation (CR) programs have shown effectiveness in improving cardiac outcomes, there is limited understanding of how patients perceive and adapt to these interventions. Furthermore, alternative modes of delivering CR that have received positive evaluations from participants remain underexplored, yet they have the potential to enhance CR uptake. OBJECTIVES: To explore the patient experience in CR programmes following Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI) and describe their adaptive processing. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This qualitative study was conducted at a national

Affective neuroscience: applications for sexual medicine research and clinical practice.

INTRODUCTION: Affective neuroscience is the study of the brain substrates of emotional, embodied experiences. Affective neuroscience theory (ANT) is based on experimental evidence that all mammals are hardwired with 7 primary subcortical emotional operating systems, or "core emotions," that have overlapping but distinct circuits buried in the deep, ancient parts of the brain. Imbalances in the 7 core emotions can affect multiple aspects of the individual's psychosocial well-being (eg, depression, anxiety, substance abuse). Here, we propose that core emotions can also influence sexual function

The Costs of Implementing a Conversation Aid for Uterine Fibroids in Multiple Health Care Settings.

BACKGROUND: Health care organizations considering adopting a conversation aid (CA), a type of patient decision aid innovation, need information about the costs of implementation. OBJECTIVES: The aims of this study were to: (1) calculate the costs of introducing a CA in a study of supported implementation in 5 gynecologic settings that manage individuals diagnosed with uterine fibroids and (2) estimate the potential costs of future clinical implementation efforts in hypothetical settings. RESEARCH DESIGN: We used time-driven activity-based costing to estimate the costs of CA implementation at

Function-Focused Person-Environment Fit for Long-Term Care Residents With Dementia: Impact on Apathy.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Apathy is a common symptom in dementia and is associated with rapid cognitive decline, poor quality of life, and higher mortality. Lawton's Competence and Environmental Press model suggests that an individual's behavior and affect are influenced by the fit of their functional abilities with the environmental demands. Yet, empirical evidence on the association between person-environment (P-E) fit and apathy is lacking. Thus, this study examined the relationship between P-E fit and apathy in dementia. Specifically, this study focused on the extent the physical environm

Outdoor workers' perceptions of skin cancer risk and attitudes to sun-protective measures: A qualitative study.

OBJECTIVES: Since January 2015, squamous cell carcinoma or multiple actinic keratosis of the skin caused by natural ultraviolet irradiation (UVR) is recognized as occupational disease in Germany. Interventions which improve the sun protection behavior of outdoor workers are urgently needed. When developing preventive interventions, the attitudes of target groups need to be taken into consideration. Therefore, outdoor workers' perceptions and attitudes were investigated. METHODS: Seven guided, problem-centered qualitative interviews with healthy male outdoor workers were conducted. A qualitati

Cardiac Rehabilitation Quality Improvement: A NARRATIVE REVIEW.

PURPOSE: Despite evidence of the effectiveness of cardiac rehabilitation (CR), there is wide variability in programs, which may impact their quality. The objectives of this review were to (1) evaluate the ways in which we measure CR quality internationally; (2) summarize what we know about CR quality and quality improvement; and (3) recommend potential ways to improve quality. METHODS: For this narrative review, the literature was searched for CR quality indicators (QIs) available internationally and experts were also consulted. For the second objective, literature on CR quality was reviewed

OBJECTIVES: Forestry services is a hazardous industry with high job-related injury, illness, and fatality rates. The Northwest workforce is largely Spanish-speaking, Latino, and immigrant, working in poor conditions with insufficient attention paid to safety and health. Institutional racism fundamentally shapes the structural vulnerability of Latino immigrant workers. Given this context, we sought to understand how workplace organizational factors and safety climate affect job-related injuries in this industry. METHODS: We developed 23 case studies from personal interviews after selecting fro

Effect of nonergot dopamine agonists on symptoms of restless legs syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: During a public health emergency, public health officials issue directives with actions people need to take to protect themselves. Past research has shown that adherence to these directives depends on individual beliefs and circumstances. This report presents new research about the effects of community factors on adherence. METHODS: A random digit-dial survey of 936 residents in the St Louis, Missouri, area was conducted in 2008 to assess barriers to and facilitators of adherence to directives issued in response to a hypothetical scenario involving the intentional release of the b

Management and motivational factors in the control of noise induced hearing loss (NIHL).

This paper describes a study investigating attitudes to noise as an occupational hazard. The objectives of the study were to understand the individual and organizational factors which affect attitudes towards noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) and to relate these to the standards of hearing conservation achieved in industry as demonstrated by compliance with the Noise at Work Regulations. The study comprised a survey of 48 organizations across Britain, and a more detailed examination of 10 of these as case studies. Methods used included desk research, audits of hearing conservation programmes,

Implementing Patient Decision Aids for Insulin Initiation in China: What are the Barriers and Facilitators? A TDF-Based Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: When oral antidiabetic drugs are insufficient to achieve glycemic control in Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), patients face the decision of whether to initiate insulin therapy. Patient decision aids (PtDAs) facilitate shared decision-making (SDM) by supporting informed, preference-congruent choices about insulin initiation. However, PtDA implementation in China remains challenging, with limited understanding of context-specific barriers. OBJECTIVE: This study is aimed at identifying the barriers and facilitators to implementing PtDAs for supporting informed decisions about insulin
