Mechanistic insight into oxide-promoted palladium catalysts for the electro-oxidation of ethanol.

Recent advancements in the development of alternatives to proton exchange membrane fuel cells utilizing less-expensive catalysts and renewable liquid fuels, such as alcohols, has been observed for alkaline fuel cell systems. Alcohol fuels present the advantage of not facing the challenge of storage and transportation encountered with hydrogen fuel. Oxidation of alcohols has been improved by the promotion of alloyed or secondary phases. Nevertheless, currently, there is no experimental understanding of the difference between an intrinsic and a synergistic promotion effect in high-pH environment

Oxidation of diesel soot on binary oxide CuCr(Co)-based monoliths.

Binary oxide systems (CuCr2O4, CuCo2O4), deposited onto cordierite monoliths of honeycomb structure with a second support (finely dispersed Al2O3), were prepared as filters for catalytic combustion of diesel soot using internal combustion engine's gas exhausts (O2, NOx, H2O, CO2) and O3 as oxidizing agents. It is shown that the second support increases soot capacity of aforementioned filters, and causes dispersion of the particles of spinel phases as active components enhancing thereby catalyst activity and selectivity of soot combustion to CO2. Oxidants used can be arranged with reference to

Oxidative stress impairs endothelial nitric oxide levels in Behçets' disease.

BACKGROUND: Behçet's disease (BD) is an inflammatory vasculitis. Endogenous nitric oxide (NO), produced by endothelial cells, has pleiotropic effects such as vasodilatator, antiplatelet, antiproliferative. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are produced at sites of endothelial inflammation. ROS target polyunsaturated lipids, which results in malondialdehyde (MDA) production. OBJECTIVE: The aim was to investigate the oxidative stress in BD patients by measuring MDA and total antioxidant status (TAS) levels and to establish a possible relationship with respect to NO levels regarding disease activity

Periodontal treatment decreases plasma oxidized LDL level and oxidative stress.

Periodontitis induces excessive production of reactive oxygen species in periodontal lesions. This may impair circulating pro-oxidant/anti-oxidant balance and induce the oxidation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) in blood. The purpose of this study was to monitor circulating oxidized LDL and oxidative stress in subjects with chronic periodontitis following non-surgical periodontal treatment. Plasma levels of oxidized LDL and oxidative stress in 22 otherwise healthy non-smokers with chronic periodontitis (mean age 44.0 years) were measured at baseline and at 1 and 2 months after non-surgical pe

Nitric oxide in obstructive uropathy: role of endothelial nitric oxide synthase.

PURPOSE: Nitric oxide (NO) ameliorates fibrosis in experimental obstructive uropathy. Previously, we demonstrated that renal fibrosis was decreased after 2 weeks of unilateral ureteral obstruction in inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) knock-out mice given L-arginine supplemented drinking water. We proposed that the 2 constitutive isoforms of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) mediated down-regulation of renal fibrosis in response to prolonged ureteral obstruction. To determine the specific role of endothelial NOS (eNOS) versus neuronal NOS in modulating renal fibrosis due to obstructive uropathy,

Oxidation of N-hydroxyguanidines by cytochromes P450 and NO-synthases and formation of nitric oxide.

Microsomal cytochromes P450 and tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4) free-NOS II catalyze the oxidation of N-hydroxyguanidines by NADPH and O2 with formation of nitrogen oxides including NO. These reactions are not selective in terms of substrates, as they occur on most N-hydroxyguanidines, and of products, as they not only lead to corresponding ureas but also to cyanamides. These non selective reactions are mainly due to O2- derived from the oxidase function of those hemeproteins. By contrast, NO synthase (NOS) containing BH4 catalyze the selective monooxygenation of some N-hydroxyguanidines by NADPH an…

Influence of nitric oxide on cellular and mitochondrial integrity in oxidatively stressed astrocytes.

Astrocytes provide protection and trophic support to neurons, but like neurons are vulnerable to oxidative stress. Decreased function of astrocytes resulting from oxidative stress could contribute to neurodegeneration. Our goal is to understand the intracellular events associated with oxidative stress in astrocytes. Because nitric oxide (NO) has been implicated as a contributor to oxidative stress in the brain, we examined in this study whether NO contributed to oxidative stress in astrocytes. Stimulation of NO decreases superoxide levels, preserves mitochondrial membrane potential, and decrea

Comparison between the uptake of nitrous oxide and nitric oxide in the human nose.

The absorption of nitrous oxide (N2O) during unidirectional flow was compared with the rate of uptake of nitric oxide (NO). At flow rates of 10, 20, and 60 ml/min from one nostril to the other, with the soft palate closed, the N2O reached a steady-state rate of absorption in 5-15 min. The mean superficial capillary blood flow (n = 5) calculated from solubility and the steady-state rate of N2O absorption ranged from 13.3 to 15.9 ml/min. The relation between absorption of N2O in the nose and capillary blood flow fits a ventilation-perfusion model used by others to describe uptake of inert, solub

Sevoflurane-nitrous oxide or halothane-nitrous oxide for paediatric bronchoscopy and gastroscopy.

We have studied 120 infants and children, in three age groups (3-11 months, 1-5 yr and 6-15 yr), to compare anaesthesia with sevoflurane or halothane for bronchoscopy or gastroscopy, or both. Premedication or i.v. anaesthetic agents were not used. Patients were allocated randomly to receive either 7% sevoflurane or 3% halothane in 66% nitrous oxide in oxygen for induction of anaesthesia. The same inspired mixture was continued during bronchoscopy while the concentration of the inhalation agent was reduced by 50% during gastroscopy. Induction times were shorter for infants than for children and

Neutrophil function, nitric oxide, and blood oxidative stress in Parkinson's disease.

We studied nitrogen radical nitric oxide (.NO) release and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production by isolated neutrophils after phorbol myristate acetate (PMA) stimulation in 12 newly diagnosed and nine treated Parkinson's disease (PD) patients and 10 age-matched healthy controls. Neutrophils of both groups of PD patients had an elevated PMA-activated release of .NO [61 and 57%, respectively, higher than that of controls (p < 0.05)]. In contrast, H2O2 release was only significantly increased by 56% in chronically treated patients. In agreement, the maximum rate of luminol-dependent chemilumi

Novel non-thermal plasma based strategy to synthesize high-performance multistage mesoporous cobalt-ceria oxides for plasma-catalytic decomposition of environmentally hazardous acetone.

A non-thermal plasma based treatment strategy is proposed to prepare CoCeOx catalysts using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as precursor, which were synthesized by a simple NaOH-mediated method through an organometallic reaction of Co2 + /Ce4+ ions and benzimidazole in the presence of polyvinylpyrrolidone. The obtained catalysts exhibited large specific surface areas and retained the morphological and structural features of the MOF precursors. The activity of the catalysts in the degradation of acetone was investigated using a post-plasma catalytic (PPC) setup and a possible degradation pathwa

Something in the air-Unveiling the role of atmospheric nitrogen oxides in nitrosamine formation from amine-containing APIs: Mechanistic insights and risk assessment.

Atmospheric nitrogen oxides (NOx) have emerged as a potential contributor to nitrosamine formation in active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) containing vulnerable amines. This study investigates the extent and mechanisms of NOx-mediated nitrosation under controlled conditions and evaluates its relevance to real-world scenarios during API manufacturing, storage and analysis. Five structurally diverse APIs were exposed to NO, NO₂, and their mixtures at concentrations representative of urban air and forcing conditions. Nitrosamine formation was confirmed for all free base APIs, whereas correspo…

Mitigated dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes by nanoscale zero-valent iron and iron oxides during anaerobic digestion: Roles of microbial succession and regulation.

Nanoscale zero-valent iron (ZVI) and the oxides have been documented as an effective approach for mitigating the dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) during anaerobic digestion (AD). However, the mechanism of ARGs dissemination mitigated by nanoscale ZVI and iron oxides remain unclear. Here, we investigated the influencing mechanisms of nanoscale ZVI and iron oxides on ARGs dissemination during AD. qPCR results indicated that nanoscale ZVI and iron oxides significantly declined the total ARGs abundances, and the strongest inhibiting effect was observed by 10 g/L nanoscale ZVI. M…

Novel Insights into Sb(III) Oxidation and Immobilization during Ferrous Iron Oxygenation: The Overlooked Roles of Singlet Oxygen and Fe (oxyhydr)oxides Formation.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced from the oxygenation of reactive Fe(II) species significantly affect the transformation of metalloids such as Sb at anoxic-oxic redox interfaces. However, the main ROS involved in Sb(III) oxidation and Fe (oxyhydr)oxides formation during co-oxidation of Sb(III) and Fe(II) are still poorly understood. Herein, this study comprehensively investigated the Sb(III) oxidation and immobilization process and mechanism during Fe(II) oxygenation. The results indicated that Sb(III) was oxidized to Sb(V) by the ROS produced in the aqueous and solid phases and then imm…
