[The participation of the cholinergic system in the genesis of the reflex vasodilatation in the gracilis muscle of the dog (author's transl)].

These experiments were undertaken to demonstrate the participation of the cholinergic system in the reflex vasodilatation in the gracilis muscle of the dog evoked by rapid i.v. injection of norepinephrine. The analysis of the integrated areas of vasodilatation curves after pretreatment with atropine showed a significant decrease of the reflex vasodilatation suggesting the participation of the cholinergic system to the mechanism underlying the phenomenon. The residue vasodilatation was completely abolished by the subsequent i.a. administration of phentolamine. On the other hand, guanethidine to

[Vagotomy in the treatment of acute ulcerations of the stomach complicated by severe hemorrhage].

It has been found that the intramural nerve apparatus of the stomach is involved in the mechanism of formation of acute gastroduodenal ulcers. Under stress there occurs simultaneous activation of the sympathetic and parasympathetic parts of the vegetative nervous system. The released acetylcholine and noradrenaline influence the corresponding receptors of the target cells which results in hyperproduction of the hydrochloric acid under conditions of hypoxia of the gastric wall and promotes acute ulceration. Conservative hemostatic therapy allows complete hemostasis to be obtained in 95% of pati

Heart rate variability and diastolic heart failure.

Diastolic heart failure accounts for up to 40% of patients with congestive heart failure (CHF), and is associated with a better prognosis as compared to patients with systolic dysfunction. Nevertheless, patients with diastolic dysfunction have a significantly higher mortality as compared to the normal population. Reduced heart rate variability (HRV), a marker of autonomic dysfunction, is associated with increased mortality in patients with systolic heart failure. We therefore sought to determine to what extent HRV is altered in a population of patients with diastolic heart failure. Twenty-four

A case of spontaneous pneumothorax presenting with high-degree atrioventricular block.

The myocardial electrical conduction is significantly influenced by the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. Hypervagotonia refers to increased vagal tone leading to sinus bradycardia, sinus pause, or any degree of atrioventricular (AV) block. There are many clinical, electrocardiographic, and electrophysiologic clues that help make the diagnosis of hypervagotonia as the cause of bradyarrhythmias. We describe a case of spontaneous pneumothorax presenting with symptomatic high-degree AV block and subsequent electrophysiologic diagnosis of hypervagotonia. The patient had complete res…

Identification of CNS neurons with polysynaptic connections to both the sympathetic and parasympathetic innervation of the submandibular gland.

Coordinated modulation of sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous activity is required for physiological regulation of tissue function. Anatomically, whilst the peripheral sympathetic and parasympathetic pathways are separate, the distribution of premotor neurons in higher brain regions often overlaps. This co-distribution would enable coordinated regulation and might suggest individual premotor neurons could project to both sympathetic and parasympathetic outflows. To investigate this one submandibular gland was sympathectomized. One of two isogenic strains of the pseudorabies virus, expressi

Combined effect of depressive symptoms and hostility on autonomic nervous system function.

Depression and hostility have been separately related to indicators of sympathetic hyperactivation and parasympathetic hypoactivation. We examined the associations of depressive symptoms, hostility, and their interaction with pre-ejection period (PEP) and high frequency heart rate variability (HRV), specific indices of sympathetic and parasympathetic cardiac control, respectively. Healthy, young adults (N=120) completed questionnaires assessing depressive symptoms and hostility and underwent autonomic testing. Although main effects were not observed, a depressive symptoms×hostility interaction

Neural control of pulpal blood flow.

Blood flow of mammalian dental pulp is under both remote and local control. There is evidence for the existence of parasympathetic nerves in the pulp, but functionally the cholinergic influence is weak, and the physiological significance of this autonomic system seems to be low. The evidence for sympathetic vasoconstrictor nerves in the pulp is robust, and there is convincing support for the contention that these nerves play a physiological role, operating via release of noradrenaline and neuropeptide Y. However, there is no significant functional evidence in support of sympathetic beta-adreno

Impairment of autonomically mediated heart rate control in patients with cardiac dysfunction.

Patients with cardiac disorders have defective parasympathetic control of heart rate. To evaluate the possibility of similar changes in sympathetic control of heart rate, we compared reflex chronotropic responses to 80 degree upright tilt and nitroglycerin-induced hypotension in 31 cardiac patients and 7 normal individuals before and after partial parasympathetic blockade with atropine. Tilting revealed an attenuation of the normal heart rate increase in patients; the magnitude of this defect was greatest in patients with more severe symptoms (class III) and evidence of left ventricular dysfun

[Neural regulation mechanism in bone regeneration].

The global aging population has intensified the incidence of degenerative bone diseases and the therapeutic demand for traumatic bone injuries, thereby making bone regenerative medicine a research focus. There is a close connection and interaction between the skeletal system and the nervous system, and innervation plays an indispensable regulatory role in the process of bone regeneration: the sympathetic nervous system exerts a negative regulatory effect during bone regeneration, while the parasympathetic nervous system plays a positive regulatory role in this process. Nerve fibers within bone…

Lean Mice Exposed to Early Life Stress Exhibit Increased Basal Sympathetic Tone and Blunted Parasympathetic Activation in Response to High Salt Diet.

Previously, we showed that male mice subjected to Maternal Separation and Early Weaning (MSEW), a model of early life stress, exhibit heightened cardiovascular responses to hypertensive stimuli. This study aimed to determine whether MSEW increases blood pressure salt sensitivity. Male C57BL/6J mouse pups were separated daily from their dams for 4-8 h from postnatal Day 2-16. MSEW mice were weaned the following day, while control litters were normally reared and weaned at postnatal Day 21, after which all mice were placed on a low-fat, normal salt diet (LFNS, 10% kcal from fat, 0.4% NaCl) for 2

Evaluation of Cardiovascular Risk in Hidradenitis Suppurativa Patients Using Heart Rate Variability (HRV) Analysis.

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease associated with elevated prevalence of comorbidities, especially metabolic and cardiovascular diseases. We used a tool called Heart Rate Variability (HRV) in order to assess the correlation between HS and alterations of the sympathetic-vagal equilibrium in the autonomic cardiovascular regulation system. We found increased sympathetic activity, associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular disease. HS, according to our results, is an independent cardiovascular risk factor.

[Explanation of some physiological characteristics of homeostasis in elderly patients with temporomandibular joint dysfunction].

Most number of patients, particularly adult and older women with temporomandibular disfunction suffers from pain reaction in maxillofacial area. Pain symptom associated with temporomandibular disfunction is followed by some changes of physiological statistics (high sympathetic level). Temporomandibular disfunction in adult and older women is most pronounced and can serve as an indicator of concomitant chronic diseases among patients with endocrine disorder (hypothyroidism), cardiological pathology (arterial hypertension).

[Vagus nerve tonus].

The majority of investigators claim that the cause of vagotomic tachycardia is switching off the vagus nerve inhibitory tone, according to other authors the sympathetic nervous system stimulation is responsible for it. The second hypothesis is confirmed by the fact that vagotomic tachycardia is arrested by surgical desympathization in animals. Our data confirm this statement. We have ascertained that vagotomic tachycardia may be decreased by a surgical intervention without desympathization in animals. Artificial lung ventilation exerts the same effect on vagotomic tachycardia. Vagus tone depen

[Pharmacological analysis of sinus rhythm].

The SA nodal pacemaker activity is regulated dominantly by autonomic nervous elements, i.e., sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous factors. In addition, circulatory bioactive substances and physicochemical factors also modify changes in sinus rate. Exogenously applied substances exert their actions on sinus rate directly and/or indirectly. The mechanisms of bradycardia and tachycardia induced by electrical nerve stimulation or exogenous substances are reviewed mostly by describing the results from experiments in isolated canine SA node preparations which were perfused with blood. Enkephalinergic sympathetic and parasympathetic innervation of the rat submandibular and sublingual glands.

Enkephalinergic innervation of the rat salivary glands was investigated by immunocytochemical techniques. Based upon immunostaining for enkephalin (ENK) and tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), 4 types of neurons could be distinguished in the submandibular ganglion: cells containing both ENK and TH (9% of all ganglion cells), cells containing only ENK (17%), cells containing only TH (4%) and cells lacking both ENK and TH (70%). Almost all of the ganglion neurons were also positive for AChE and so were most of the TH-positive cells. The ENK-positive fibers outnumbered the TH-positive fibers. Although TH-

[The sources of the innervation of the sphincter of the esophagogastric junction in rats].

The investigation has been performed by means of the luminescent microscopical method. The retrograde axonal transport of the fluorescent marker primuline has demonstrated that a definite amount of labelled cells are observed in the celiac plexus, in nodes of the thoracic part of the sympathetic trunk (predominantly in Th6-Th8). Innervation of the EGP sphincter is mainly performed from the sympathetic trunk nodes (Th6-Th8) and from the celiac plexus.

The effect of sympathetic and parasympathetic activity on QT duration. Clinical study in patients with normal and prolonged QT time.

The effect of parasympathetic and sympathetic pharmacologic blockade (atropine and propranolol) on QT duration was studied in 26 patients. Of this number 17 had a normal QT time, while in 9 patients the QT interval was prolonged (greater than 460 ms). QT time was determined before and after the pharmacologic blockade with sinus rhythm (under a non fixed cycle length) and with atrial pacing (with a fixed cycle length). Atropine administration did not change QT duration significantly. On the effect of beta receptor blockade in normal patients only the corrected QT time shortened, while in long Q

Intraseptal microinjection of adrenocorticotropic hormone1-24 antagonizes pentobarbital-induced narcosis and depression of hippocampal cholinergic activity.

Intracerebroventricular or intraseptal microinjection of adrenocorticotropic hormone1-24 (ACTH1-24) to pentobarbital-anesthetized rats and rabbits produced shortening of the duration of narcosis. This analeptic effect was blocked by atropine, indicating the central cholinergic nature of the response. ACTH1-24 also increased hippocampal sodium-dependent high affinity choline uptake activity that had been depressed by the barbiturate. Naloxone-pretreatment also blocked the analeptic and cholinergic activating properties of ACTH1-24. These results suggest that intraseptal ACTH1-24 produces its an
