Distinct signatures of B-cell homeostatic and activation-dependent chemokine receptors in the development and progression of extragastric MALT lymphomas.

Chemokine receptors mediate migration and activation of lymphocytes through binding of their ligands. Recent studies have revealed important contributions of chemokine receptors to the development, progression, and dissemination of haematopoietic neoplasms. Because the chemokine receptor expression profile in extragastric MALT lymphoma is unknown, we performed a comprehensive study on tissue samples of parotid glands, parotid glands affected by Sjögren syndrome, extragastric MALT lymphoma, and extranodal diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (eDLBCL) originating from MALT lymphoma (transformed MALT ly

Sclerosing Polycystic Adenoma Masquerading as Malignancy on Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology.

Sclerosing polycystic adenoma (SPA) is a rare benign salivary gland neoplasm composed of a lobular proliferation of ducts lined by cuboidal, columnar, apocrine, and foamy vacuolated cells, and acinar structures having large cells with intracytoplasmic bright eosinophilic granules in a collagenous stroma with lymphoid aggregates. Due to its rarity, its cytological features are not widely documented. The spectrum of cell types may lead to it being mistaken for malignancy on cytological examination. This 29-year-old male presented with a right parotid swelling measuring 4 cm on ultrasonography. F

Basal Cell Adenoma of the Minor Salivary Glands in the Buccal Mucosa: A Rare Entity Arising in an Unusual Location.

One of the rare tumors of the salivary gland is known as basal cell adenoma (BCA). Only a small percentage of salivary gland tumors affect the minor salivary gland of the oral cavity while the majority are found in the parotid gland. We present a rare case of BCA involving the left buccal mucosa of a 45-year-old female. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed well defined solid mass measuring 1.9 x 1.5 cm in the left buccal space inseparable from the buccinator muscle. The T2-weighted image demonstrates a hyperintense signal post-contrast. Ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration cytology reve

Mammary analog secretory carcinoma of salivary glands: a report of 2 cases with expression of basal/myoepithelial markers (calponin, CD10 and p63 protein).

Mammary analog secretory carcinoma (MASC) of salivary glands is a recently described neoplasm with favorable outcome. We describe 2 cases of MASC occurring in a 34-year-old female and a 58-year-old male, both presenting with a swelling of upper lip and right parotid gland, measuring 15 and 20mm, respectively. Without adjuvant treatment, both patients have been free of disease for 15 months and 12 months since the operation. Microscopically, both tumors were cystic and showed tubular and cystopapillary architecture. The tumor cells had round to oval nuclei and eosinophilic cytoplasm. Presence o

Prognostic significance of biomarkers (c-erbB-2, p53, proliferating cell nuclear antigen, and DNA content) in salivary duct carcinoma.

Salivary duct carcinoma (SDC), a rare neoplasm of the major salivary glands, is a high-grade carcinoma with a predilection for elderly men. The authors investigated the prognostic role of p53, c-erbB2, proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), and DNA flow cytometry in a pathobiological evaluation of a cohort of 30 patients with these neoplasms. The patient group comprised 24 men and 6 women, with ages ranging from 22 to 87 years (mean = 61 years). Twenty-eight tumors were located in the parotid gland and two in the submandibular gland. Tumor size ranged from 1.0 to 8.0 cm (mean = 3.48 cm). R

The diagnostic efficacy of ultrasonographically-based measurements of minimum and maximum fascia-tumor distance in differentiating superficial from deep lobe benign parotid tumors.

OBJECTIVES: The objective was to calculate the efficacy of ultrasonographically-based measurements of minimum and maximum fascia-tumor distance (MiFTD and MaFTD) of benign salivary gland tumors to identify tumor location in the superficial or deep lobe of the parotid gland. STUDY DESIGN: MiFTDs and MaFTDs were measured on pre-operative ultrasonographic images of 102 tumors. Tumor location was classified at surgery as superficial or deep based on relation to the facial nerve, with 74 tumors in the superficial lobe and 28 in the deep lobe. The diagnostic efficacy of differences in MiFTD and MaF

Frey syndrome after conservative parotidectomy: Importance of closing the remnant parotid parenchyma.

BACKGROUND: Frey syndrome (FS) is a typical late complication following parotidectomy. Parotid surgery without proper coverage or reconstruction of exposed parotid parenchyma may contribute to the development of FS. Therefore, this study compared the closure versus the non-closure of exposed parotid parenchyma in the occurrence of FS. METHODS: This study included 195 patients with parotid lesions who underwent partial or superficial parotidectomy plus closure or non-closure of exposed parotid parenchyma, both with the application of fibrin glue. Two surgical methods of closure and non-closure

Ultrasonography techniques in the preoperative diagnosis of parotid gland tumors - an updated review of the literature.

Preoperative diagnosis of parotid tumors plays a crucial role in selecting and planning the surgical treatment. Ultrasound (US) with its modern techniques can contribute to the differential diagnosis of parotid tumors. This paper aims to achieve a comprehensive review of the ultrasound techniques used in the differential diagnosis of parotid tumors, based on the latest literature data. Considering that most parotid gland tumors are located in the superficial lobe, US is frequently the first imaging technique used for the diagnosis of parotid tumors. Sonoelastography can provide additional data
