When the brain remembers, but the patient doesn't: converging fMRI and EEG evidence for covert recognition in a case of prosopagnosia.

The role of the occipito-temporal cortex in visual awareness remains an open question and with respect to faces in particular, it is unclear to what extent the fusiform face area (FFA) may be involved in conscious identification. An answer may be gleaned from prosopagnosia, a disorder in which familiar faces are no longer recognized. This impairment has sometimes been reported to be associated with implicit processing of facial identity, although the neural substrates responsible for unconscious processing remain unknown. In this study, we addressed these issues by investigating the functional

Brief report: face configuration accuracy and processing speed among adults with high-functioning autism spectrum disorders.

The present study investigates the accuracy and speed of face processing employed by high-functioning adults with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). Two behavioral experiments measured sensitivity to distances between features and face recognition when performance depended on holistic versus featural information. Results suggest adults with ASD were less accurate, but responded as quickly as controls for both tasks. In contrast to previous findings with children, adults with ASD demonstrated a holistic advantage only when the eye region was tested. Both groups recognized large manipulations to

Racial distinction of the unknown facial identity recognition mechanism by event-related fMRI.

A body of evidence exists indicating that the function of the fusiform area of the face is selectively involved in the perception of faces, and in particular, in perceiving racial differences. In the present study, we investigated the neural substrates of the face-selective region (the fusiform face area, FFA) in the ventral occipital-temporal cortex and examined their role in case of same-racial face recognition by employing event-related fMRI. Twelve healthy subjects (Oriental-Koreans) performed the familiarity judgment tasks while they were being presented with familiar and unknown faces of

Facial emotion processing in criminal psychopathy. Preliminary functional magnetic resonance imaging study.

BACKGROUND: It has been suggested that people with psychopathic disorders lack empathy because they have deficits in processing distress cues (e.g. fearful facial expressions). AIMS: To investigate brain function when individuals with psychopathy and a control group process facial emotion. METHOD: Using event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging we compared six people scoring > or =25 on the Hare Psychopathy Checklist-Revised and nine non-psychopathic healthy volunteers during an implicit emotion processing task using fearful, happy and neutral faces. RESULTS: The psychopathy group

Disgust-specific impairment of facial expression recognition in Parkinson's disease.

There is contradictory evidence regarding whether the impairments of the recognition of emotional facial expressions in Parkinson's disease are specific to certain emotions such as disgust and fear. Generally, neurological case reports on emotion-specific impairments have been suspected of being confounded with the factor of task difficulty. Using a refined assessment method in which the difficulty factors were controlled by means of mixed facial expressions and item response theory, we attempted to clarify whether Parkinson's disease disproportionately impaired the recognition of specific emo

Functional dissociation of amygdala-modulated arousal and cognitive appraisal, in Turner syndrome.

The amygdala is preferentially activated by facial expressions of fear. Right and left amygdala are hypothesized to play distinct, but complementary, roles that influence somatic and cognitive responses to facial expressions. Right amygdala activation is linked to autonomic arousal, and thus indirectly influences left hemisphere cognitive processing centres. Left amygdala activation is more closely associated with cognitive processing and differentiation of facial emotions. A double-dissociation between the functions of left and right amygdala is implied by lesion studies but supportive eviden

Global shape recognition is modulated by the spatial distance of local elements--evidence from simultanagnosia.

Simultanagnosia is a rare deficit that impairs individuals in perceiving several objects at the same time. It is usually observed following bilateral parieto-occipital brain damage. Despite the restrictions in perceiving the global aspect of a scene, processing of individual objects remains unaffected. The mechanisms underlying simultanagnosia are not well understood. Previous findings indicated that the integration of multiple objects into a holistic representation of the environment is not impossible per se, but might depend on the spatial relationship between individual objects. The present

The representation of objects in the human occipital and temporal cortex.

Recently, we identified, using fMRI, three bilateral regions in the ventral temporal cortex that responded preferentially to faces, houses, and chairs [Ishai, A., Ungerleider, L. G., Martin, A., Schouten, J. L., & Haxby, J. V. (1999). Distributed representation of objects in the human ventral visual pathway. Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, U.S.A., 96, 9379--9384]. Here, we report differential patterns of activation, similar to those seen in the ventral temporal cortex, in bilateral regions of the ventral occipital cortex. We also found category-related responses in the dorsal

Impact of Hyperventilation and Sleep Deprivation Upon Visual Evoked Potentials in Patients with Epilepsy.

OBJECTIVES: The diagnosis of epilepsy can cause many problems, especially when the routine electrophysiological tests are inconclusive. The aim of the present study was to assess the visual evoked potential (VEP) in patients with epilepsy using various kinds of stimulation and activation tests. The VEP parameters were also presented with reference to the type of seizure and abnormalities in electroencephalogram (EEG), including the response to the activation tests. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study comprised 81 patients with newly diagnosed epilepsy of unknown etiology before initiation of th

Distributed neural systems for the generation of visual images.

Visual perception of houses, faces, and chairs evoke differential responses in ventral temporal cortex. Using fMRI, we compared activations evoked by perception and imagery of these object categories. We found content-related activation during imagery in extrastriate cortex, but this activity was restricted to small subsets of the regions that showed category-related activation during perception. Within ventral temporal cortex, activation during imagery evoked stronger responses on the left whereas perception evoked stronger responses on the right. Additionally, visual imagery evoked activity

Effects of Pattern-Reversal Visual Stimulation on Brain Activity in Migraineurs and General Population.

BackgroundA better understanding of migraine pathophysiology through standardized methods could facilitate the development of more effective therapeutic approaches for migraine sufferers. However, neurophysiological studies with migraine sufferers present larger variability, as most contain only a single measurement.ObjectiveThis observational study aimed to compare the cortical and visual excitability of migraine sufferers, individuals with other types of headaches, and healthy participants in response to pattern-reversal visual stimulation.MethodsFifty-nine individuals were classified by a n

Spontaneous pattern formation and pinning in the primary visual cortex.

A mean field approach to the population activity of cortical neurons is used to provide a possible mechanism for the generation of geometric visual hallucinations. As was previously investigated, competition between short-range excitation and longer-range inhibition in the connectivity profile of neurons provides the difference of length scales necessary for spontaneous symmetry breaking in the form of the Turing mechanism to generate patterns of activity. This approach is expanded in order to be able to incorporate additional details of the cortical circuitry, namely that neurons are also wea

Guided saccades modulate face- and body-sensitive activation in the occipitotemporal cortex during social perception.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has identified distinct brain regions in ventral occipitotemporal cortex (VOTC) and lateral occipitotemporal cortex (LOTC) that are differentially activated by pictures of faces and bodies. Recent work from our laboratory has shown that the strong LOTC activation evoked by bodies in which the face is occluded is attenuated when the occlusion is removed. We hypothesized that this attenuation may occur because subjects preferentially fixate upon faces when present in the scene. Here, we experimentally manipulated subjects' fixations while they viewed

Ventral extra-striate cortical areas are required for optimal orientation averaging.

We examined the ability of a previously well-studied patient with visual agnosia to compute the average orientation of elements in visual displays. In a structural MRI study, we show that the lesion is likely to involve a variety of ventral extra-striate areas, including V2, V3 and V4; however, the lesion does not extend dorsally. Subsequently we show that some ability to compute average orientation is spared, though there are limitations on the ability to scale the averaging process as a function of the numbers of elements. The results suggest that some aspects of orientation averaging can be

Imprinting modulates processing of visual information in the visual wulst of chicks.

BACKGROUND: Imprinting behavior is one form of learning and memory in precocial birds. With the aim of elucidating of the neural basis for visual imprinting, we focused on visual information processing. RESULTS: A lesion in the visual wulst, which is similar functionally to the mammalian visual cortex, caused anterograde amnesia in visual imprinting behavior. Since the color of an object was one of the important cues for imprinting, we investigated color information processing in the visual wulst. Intrinsic optical signals from the visual wulst were detected in the early posthatch period and

Effects of visual contrast on visual evoked potentials and Doppler signal.

We studied visually evoked cerebral blood flow responses (VEFR) and visual evoked potentials (VEP) to different visual contrasts and analysed the relationship between them. The records were made from 35 healthy volunteers aged 38.6 +/- 10.1 years. The stimulus was a black-and-white checkerboard with visual contrasts (VC) of 1%, 10% and 100%. The VEFR were measured in the posterior cerebral artery using transcranial Doppler, and the VEP were recorded from the occipital leads. We found the relationship between visual contrast and VEFR (r = 0.79, P < 0.01) as well as between visual contrast and V

Comparison between the lambda response of eye-fixation-related potentials and the P100 component of pattern-reversal visual evoked potentials.

The purpose of this study was to compare the lambda response of eye-fixation-related potentials (EFRPs) with the P100 component of pattern-reversal visual-evoked potentials. EFRPs were obtained by averaging EEGs time-locked to the offset of the saccade. The dipole of the lambda response and that of the P100 component were estimated by the dipole-tracing method (Musha & Homma, 1990). The locations of their dipoles at the occipital sites were very close to each other when the difference waveform, which was calculated by subtracting the EFRP to the patternless stimulus from the EFRP to the patter

Pattern electroretinogram and computerized optic nerve-head analysis in glaucoma suspects.

Both the pattern electroretinogram (PERG) and computerized disc analysis have been shown to detect early stages of glaucomatous optic nerve disease. As these two methods tap different domains (PERG reflects ganglion cell function, whereas disc analysis yields morphometric measures), we set out to compare their results in the same eyes. We recorded the PERG and optic disc parameters in 114 eyes of 58 ocular hypertensive patients. In addition, 51 eyes (26 patients) were monitored over a follow-up period of more than 6 months using the optic nerve-head analyzer. We found: (1) that a reduction in

Detection performance of normal cats and those lacking areas 17 and 18: a behavioral approach to analyse pattern recognition deficits.

The ability of cats to discriminate between two geometrical outline patterns in the presence of superimposed Gaussian visual noise was tested before and after bilateral removal of cortical area 17 and parts of area 18. The detection probability PD was measured as a function of the signal-to-noise ratio for the parameters: noise bandwidth, spatial frequency content and rate of movement of patterns. In both normal and lesioned cats a broadband noise was found to be most effective in masking the large patterns while two other types of noise, a medium frequency noise and a high frequency noise had

Visual mechanisms for the analysis of spatial pattern.

After a brief outline of the structure and electrophysiology of the normal visual pathways, the responses, as revealed by psychophysical studies, of the visual system to spatially and temporally varying stimuli are reviewed. An appropriate network model, involving two sequentially organized classes of visual channel, is presented. Examples are given in which the psychophysical methods developed to analyse the normal visual pathways are applied to cases in which these pathways are defective (amblyopia, albinism, hemianopia, parietal cortical lesion, inhibitory central colour vision defect).
