BACKGROUND: Isolated tears of the pectoralis minor (PMi) are rare and often misdiagnosed as pectoralis major or costochondral injuries. Since the first report in 2004, only eleven cases have been described in the English-language literature, all involving the myotendinous junction or coracoid insertion. A tear at the costal origin has not previously been reported.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 46-year-old male developed acute anterior chest pain after pulling a heavy hospital bed. Physical examination revealed focal tenderness over the third to fifth ribs and pain with resisted internal rotation. Magn

BACKGROUND: Poland syndrome (PS) is a congenital abnormality defined as aplasia or hypoplasia of the unilateral pectoralis muscle and breast tissue that may be accompanied by limb or thoracic deformities. Reconstruction of deformities associated with PS is challenging owing to the spectrum of differences. We aimed to evaluate the trends in surgical management of chest and breast anatomical anomalies associated with PS.
METHODS: A systematic review of studies describing primary surgical management of chest and breast deformities in PS was conducted. Papers exclusively describing PS-associated

The pectoralis major flap (PMF) is one of the most used pedicled flaps for reconstructive surgery in head and neck. Basing on previous studies observing that a vascular accident or pedicle ligation not always resulted in necrosis of free flaps, sometimes after a short critical period, we describe the possibility to perform the division of the PMF pedicle. The autonomization of PMF is based on the hypothesis that the flap, after a critical period, develops a neoangiogenesis at the free portion in the recipient site. It represents a possible choice in selected patients with relapse or second tum

A study was conducted to understand the differentially expressed genes in Pectoralis (P) major under woody breast (WB) myopathy condition in a high yielding broiler strain using RNA-sequencing at the growing (d 21) and finishing (d 42 and d 56) grow-out ages. Follow-up study was conducted to understand the in vivo triglyceride (TG) synthesis (d 49) occurring in adipogenic tissues using deuterium oxide (2H2O) as a metabolic tracer. Results indicated the top physiological systems affected in myopathy broiler were related to the musculo-skeletal system (d 21, 42, and 56) and cardiovascular system

PURPOSE: Poland syndrome was first described as a deficiency of the pectoral muscle with ipsilateral symbrachydactyly. Currently, numerous case reports describe variations of Poland syndrome in which pectoral muscle deficiency is often used as the only defining criterion. However, more syndromes can present with pectoral muscle deficiency. The aim of this review is to illustrate the diversity of the phenotypic spectrum of Poland syndrome and to create more awareness for alternative diagnoses in pectoral muscle deficiency.
METHODS: A systematic literature search was performed. Articles contain

OBJECTIVE: To explore the therapeutic effect of sternum-hyoid muscle transposition and arytenoid adduction for unilateral vocal cord paralysis (UVCP).
METHODS: Included in this study were 19 patients with UVCP lasted for 12 months to 15 years. The surgical technique was as follows. The thyroid cartilage was engaged with a skin hook and gently rotated anteriorly. The lateral-inferior corner of the thyroid cartilage was exposed and the muscular process of the arytenoid was identified. Then, the thyroid lamina on the involved side was parasagittally separated 5 mm off the midline. The inner peri

Sternal cleft is a rare visually dramatic congenital anomaly. It results from failure of fusion of the 2 lateral mesodermal sternal bars by the 8 weeks of gestation. Superior clefts are more frequent than inferior ones, and isolated central clefts are extremely rare. We describe the case of a 4-year-old girl with a central sternal cleft that was closed autogenously with pectoralis major advancement flaps.

We present a case report of a 2-year-old child with a hypopharyngeal stricture secondary to caustic soda ingestion. We discuss the initial and long-term management of caustic soda ingestion. In this case the hypopharynx was successfully reconstructed using a pedicled pectoralis major flap. We demonstrate the versatility of this flap, which is traditionally known for its use in adult head and neck surgery.

We report the case of a 38-year-old woman who had pulmonary actinomycosis that involved the pleura and the pectoral muscles. The patient was initially treated with intravenous ceftriaxone once a day on an outpatient basis. After 3 weeks of treatment, a computed tomogram showed resolution of the initial findings. This result suggests that ceftriaxone may be an effective and convenient therapeutic agent for the initial parenteral treatment of actinomycosis.

Pathogenesis, morphology and different associated abnormalities in the so-called Poland syndrome are considered. The surgical treatment adopted in the case recently observed is discussed. In most cases an isolated muscular and breast hypoplasia or aplasia is present so that surgery has the only intent to solve the esthetic problem.

The authors report 2 sporadic cases of the Poland-Möbius syndrome in neonates. Both cases presented with unilateral facial palsy, bilateral loss of abduction of the eye, palatal palsy and tongue hypoplasia. The Poland anomaly was total in the first case (absence of pectoralis major, hypoplasia of the right superior limb, syndactyly and brachydactyly) and only partial in the second (absence of pectoralis major).

We report three unrelated patients: two (patients 1 and 3) with preaxial polydactyly type 1 (PPT1), and one (patient 2) with PPT1 and Poland complex, and previously undescribed minor manifestations in the parents. The mother of patient 1 has camptodactyly with mild ulnar deviation of the distal phalanx of left thumb. The mother of patient 2 has symmetrical minor changes of both hands: mild camptodactyly of digits 4 and 5; mild clinodactyly of right 5th digit; absent or hypoplastic DIP flexion creases of digits 2, 3, 4 and 5; and tight skin around the middle phalanx of the 4th fingers. Paralympic Powerlifting (PP) is a maximum strength modality, where male athletes demonstrated greater relative and absolute strength compared to conventional powerlifting. This study aimed to assess the acute effects of traditional training (TT) and eccentric training (ET) methods on Maximum Isometric Strength (MIF), Time to Maximum Isometric Force (Time), Muscle Activation (sEMG), and Skin Temperature (Thermo) in twelve male PP athletes (mean age 30.25 ± 8.13; body weight 72.36 ± 18.47). The training consisted of 5 sets of 5 repetitions (5 × 5), with 80% 1RM in the TT method and in the ET 80%

The 'membrane pacemaker' hypothesis proposes a biochemical explanation for among-species variation in resting metabolism, based on the positive correlation between membrane docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and metabolic rate. We tested this hypothesis using a novel model, altricial red-winged blackbird nestlings, predicting that the proportion of DHA in muscle and liver membranes should increase with the increasing metabolic rate of the nestling as it develops endothermy. We also used a dietary manipulation, supplementing the natural diet with fish oil (high DHA) or sunflower oil (high linoleic acid

UNLABELLED: The present study examined whether pain catastrophizing and pain-related fear predict the experience of pain in body regions that are not targeted by an experimental muscle injury protocol. A delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) protocol was used to induce pain unilaterally in the pectoralis, serratus, trapezius, latissimus dorsi, and deltoid muscles. The day after the DOMS protocol, participants were asked to rate their pain as they lifted weighted canisters with their targeted (ie, injured) arm and their nontargeted arm. The lifting task is a nonnoxious stimulus unless participan

Post-stroke neural damage can impair sequential muscle activation, which may lead to associated reactions (ARs) during effortful tasks. During gait this may manifest as homolateral limb synkinesis (HLS), where voluntary movement of paretic limb evokes involuntary movement in the corresponding ipsilateral limb. Upper limb muscle activation underlying HLS during ambulation remains poorly understood, hence this study aimed to investigate muscle activation using surface electromyography (sEMG) in post-stroke HLS patients. This study included 22 participants, 11 in each group. sEMG recordings were

Forty three cadavers of adult and five patients were included in our study. Accessory, suprascapular, musculocutaneous and sural nerves were dissected. These widely used nerves in brachial plexus reconstruction have varying anatomy and still have no standard approach for surgery. Dissection of the accessory nerve in the upper part of the posterior neck triangle was quite complicated took a relatively long time and the nerve could easily be injured. It was found that these shortcomings could be diminished starting dissection of this nerve in the lower part of the posterior neck triangle near th
