Exploring the Impact of Bullying and Friendship on Mental Health Outcomes Among Transgender, Gender Diverse (TGD), and Cisgender Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual (LGB+) Youth.

Prejudice and discrimination put 2SLGBTQ+ youth at greater risk of developing poor mental health outcomes. Yet there is heterogeneity within this group, notably a greater risk for poor mental health outcomes in trans and gender diverse (TGD) youth. The goal of this study was to determine if the relationship between bullying and mental health outcomes, and the potential protective influence of peer friendship, differed between cisgender lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB+) and TGD youth. Using data from the 12-year youth survey from All Our Families cohort (n = 221), we analyzed youth's responses o

Exploring the influence of social relationships on adolescents' multiple sleep problems via a school-based China education panel survey: the moderating role of depressive emotion.

BACKGROUND: Poor adolescent sleep health is a significant public health issue worldwide. In particular, multiple sleep problems disturb the lives of adolescents. It is urgent to identify the key factors (e.g., parent‒child relationships, peer relationships, and teacher‒student relationships) and influential moderators (e.g., depressive emotions) that contribute to adolescent sleep problems. METHODS: Data were derived from the China Education Panel Survey (CEPS) and collected through self-reported questionnaires. A total of 7405 students (3818 boys and 3587 girls) born between 2000 and 2001 we

Socio-ecological domains and adolescent mental health: An application of the dual-factor model.

Comprehensive assessment of mental health includes wellbeing and psychopathology. Using the dual-factor model of mental health, this study explored associations between socioecological domains and mental health profiles and subsequent moderations by sex, race and ethnicity, and age. Cross-sectional data were from the Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) Cohort (N = 2826). Adolescents were 11-17 years old (mean age 14.4 ± 2.1), 55.3% non-Hispanic White, and 48% girls. Using latent profile analysis, four mental health groups were identified: positive mental health; parent-end

Let's hear it from the facilitators: Experiences of peer facilitators in engendering work with adolescent boys and young men in Cape Town, South Africa.

Working with men and boys is central to improving sexual and reproductive health and rights and contributes to gender equality and social justice. Focusing on two behaviour change interventions ("One Youth Can" and "SKILLZ Guyz"), embedded within a national HIV programme ("My Journey"), this qualitative, exploratory study explored the contextual and organizational realities faced by peer facilitators in implementing these two interventions and what it would take to integrate a gender-transformative approach into their practice. The research, conducted in South Africa, used three data sources:

Design of egocentric network-based studies to estimate causal effects under interference.

Many public health interventions are conducted in settings where individuals are connected and the intervention assigned to some individuals may spill over to other individuals. In these settings, we can assess: (a) the individual effect on the treated, (b) the spillover effect on untreated individuals through an indirect exposure to the intervention, and (c) the overall effect on the whole population. Here, we consider an egocentric network-based randomized design in which a set of index participants is recruited and randomly assigned to treatment, while data are also collected on their untre

"She Was Real About It and Made Me Feel Life Is Important": Patient Perspectives on Peers' Role in Peer-Assisted Telemedicine Hepatitis C Treatment for People Who Use Drugs in Rural Communities.

OBJECTIVES: Telemedicine is a promising approach to reach people with limited access to treatment for hepatitis C. People who use drugs (PWUD) and are disengaged from services, however, experience barriers to telemedicine access. The Oregon HOPE TeleHCV study employed peer support specialists to provide outreach to engage PWUD, support pretreatment screening, facilitate telemedicine Hepatitis C virus visits, and assist HCV medication initiation and adherence. In our randomized controlled trial (N =203), the model demonstrated substantially higher HCV treatment initiation and cure compared with

Longitudinal Study of Indigenous Children: adolescent never smoking and associations with individual, social, and environmental factors.

Fuelled by the tobacco industry, commercial tobacco use is a major cause of preventable morbidity and mortality among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Preventing adolescent smoking initiation is critical to reducing uptake. Understanding individual, social, and environmental factors that are protective against smoking can inform prevention strategies. We analysed data from adolescents 12-15 years and their caregivers from Wave 11 (2018) of the Longitudinal Study of Indigenous Children (LSIC). Poisson regression was used to calculate adjusted prevalence ratios (PR) of never smokin

Relationships between childhood maltreatment, peer victimization and depressive symptoms in youth: a network approach on the cycle of victimization.

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), such as childhood maltreatment and peer-related problems, are among the most influential risk factors contributing to the development of depressive symptoms in children and adolescents. Using a network approach, this study investigated the relationships between diverse forms of ACEs and distinct depressive symptoms in children and adolescents with psychiatric disorders. METHODS: A total of 464 psychiatric outpatients diagnosed with a range of psychiatric disorders (278 females; mean age = 14.2 years, standard deviation = 2.1 years) were includ

Social support and online interaction and their links to psychosocial well-being among Nordic adolescents: Integrating variable-centered and person-centered approaches.

The Nordic countries are among the most digitally advanced societies in the world. Past research suggests that both social support offline and interaction online are linked to adolescent psychological adjustment. However, less is known regarding the complex implications of distinctive sources of social support offline and online interaction for a broader range of indices of adolescent psychosocial well-being, including its contemporary forms such as social media addiction. This study utilized two methodological approaches to examine the social components and determinants of psychosocial well-b

Social reorientation of emotion regulation: Changing roles of family and peers during adolescence.

The emotional climate of the family and peer group is theorized to play a central role in the development of emotion regulation (ER) in children and adolescents, such that warmer, more supportive environments promote more effective ER. However, most studies demonstrating associations between social interactions and ER use have focused on individual differences in the regulation of negative affect. This study is the first to investigate whether social interactions with family versus peers are differentially associated with ER, of both negative and positive affect, using a unique multi-timescale…

Smartphone intervention for pregnancy smoking cessation with peer support: the study protocol of the SmokeFree Together 2.0 (SFT 2.0) randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Smoking in pregnancy negatively impacts the mother's and offspring's health. Mobile health, especially mobile phone-based approaches, shows promise in supporting pregnant women to quit smoking. Our previous research indicated that support from laypersons, such as family, friends and coworkers, can increase smoking cessation. Building on these findings, we developed an innovative smartphone application (app) that combines the power of social support with artificial intelligence. The app leverages the unique functionality of smartphones and reinforcement learning (RL) to provide a

Co-designing a peer support programme for carers of people treated under the Mental Health Act: views from stakeholders.

BACKGROUND: Relatives/friends (carers) of people who are involuntarily admitted to a psychiatric hospital report high levels of stress, feelings of isolation and exclusion from their patient's care. One-to-one peer support is widely implemented for patients, facilitating mental health recovery. Preliminary evidence reports that peer support may benefit carers too, but a one-to-one peer support programme to help carers when their relatives/friends are in hospital has not been developed. OBJECTIVE: To explore carers', patients', and professionals' views on what an accessible, feasible and helpf

A Linguistic Analysis of Future Perceptions of Parents of Adolescents With Complex Regional Pain Syndrome and Parents of Pain-Free Peers.

BACKGROUND: Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a chronic pain condition which typically affects a body extremity and occurs more frequently from the onset of adolescence. Parents of adolescents with chronic pain report uncertainty and fear concerning their adolescent's transition to adulthood. Nonetheless, little is known about how parents of adolescents with CRPS perceive their adolescent's future. METHODS: This study sought to explore the future perceptions of parents of adolescents with CRPS (n = 45) and compare their use of language with a sample of parents of adolescents without ch

Exploring the relationship between peer loneliness, problematic videogame use, and cyberbullying victimisation in adolescence.

Background: Adolescence, acknowledged as a transformative developmental phase marked by socio-emotional challenges, introduces an elevated susceptibility to loneliness. As adolescents are exposed to loneliness, they concurrently navigate the dynamic landscape of problematic videogame use, characterised by deleterious gaming patterns with consequential impacts across various life domains. Empirical evidence indicates a significant correlation between experiences of cyberbullying victimisation and heightened feelings of loneliness, particularly within the context of peer relationships during thi

Technology-assisted cognitive-behavioral therapy for perinatal depression delivered by lived-experience peers: a cluster-randomized noninferiority trial.

Perinatal depression affects one in four women in low- and middle-income countries. The World Health Organization's Thinking Healthy Programme (WHO-THP) is an established 'task-shared' cognitive-behavioral therapy intervention for perinatal depression. However, efforts to scale up are hampered by overburdened health systems struggling to maintain quality and fidelity. Here, to overcome these challenges, we coproduced with end users a technology-assisted digital version of the THP delivered by lived-experience peers (technology-assisted peer-delivered THP (THP-TAP)). We aimed to evaluate the ef
