Cheyne-Stokes Breathing is a periodic cycle of apnea followed by hyperventilation. A theory of this phenomenon is developed based on a minimal set of physiological assumptions. The rate of loss of CO2 from venous blood is proportional to the CO2 concentration in the lungs times the respiration rate; the respiration rate is a linear function of arterial CO2 concentration above a threshold, and zero below that threshold. A time delay between blood in lungs and respiratory response allows the system to go into oscillation. These assumptions lead to a single nonanalytic delay-differential equation

Primary hypokalemic periodic paralysis (HypoPP) is a skeletal muscle channelopathy most commonly caused by pathogenic variants in the calcium channel gene, CACNA1S. HypoPP can present with attacks of paralysis and/or permanent muscle weakness. Previous studies have shown that patients with HypoPP can have impaired quality of life (QoL). In this cross-sectional study, we aimed to describe the QoL in patients with HypoPP caused by pathogenic variants in CACNA1S using The Individualized Neuromuscular Quality of Life (INQoL) questionnaire, a validated tool to measure the QoL of patients with neuro

The thymus, a vital immune organ in humans, plays a crucial role in the differentiation and development of T cells. Its normal development commences around the fourth week of gestation, originating from the ectoderm of the third branchial cleft and the endoderm of the third parotid pouch. By the 7-8th week of gestation, the primary thymus migrates towards the central axis. However, various factors may disrupt this process, leading to congenital anomalies such as incomplete descent of thymus tissue. Persistence of residual thymus tissue can result in the formation of ectopic thymus. Although ec

Oxytocin is a reproductive hormone implicated in the process of parturition and widely used during labor. Oxytocin is produced within the supraoptic nucleus and paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus and released from the posterior pituitary lobe into the circulation. Oxytocin is released in pulses with increasing frequency and amplitude in the first and second stages of labor, with a few pulses released in the third stage of labor. During labor, the fetus exerts pressure on the cervix of the uterus, which activates a feedforward reflex-the Ferguson reflex-which releases oxytocin. When my

Periodic fever syndromes (PFS) are a group of autoinflammatory diseases characterized by repeated febrile episodes and systemic inflammation. The most common monogenic periodic fever syndromes are familial Mediterranean fever, mevalonate kinase deficiency/hyper immunoglobulin D syndrome, cryopyrin-associated periodic syndrome, and tumor necrosis factor receptor-associated periodic syndrome. Although fever is the predominant feature of PFS, other systems, including the cardiovascular system, may be involved in the disease process. This review focuses on cardiovascular risks and issues in monoge

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Periodic limb movement in sleep is a common sleep phenotype characterized by repetitive leg movements that occur during or before sleep. We conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of periodic limb movements in sleep (PLMS) using a joint analysis (i.e., discovery, replication, and joint meta-analysis) of four cohorts (MrOS, the Wisconsin Sleep Cohort Study, HypnoLaus, and MESA), comprised of 6843 total subjects.
METHODS: The MrOS study and Wisconsin Sleep Cohort Study (N = 1745 cases) were used for discovery. Replication in the HypnoLaus and MESA cohorts (1002 cases)

Asthma is one of the most common chronic diseases in pregnancy and is associated with adverse perinatal outcomes. Asthma symptoms worsen in approximately 40% of women, and exacerbations requiring medical intervention occur in at least 20% of women. Factors associated with exacerbation and worsening asthma include multiparity, obesity, Black race, exacerbations before pregnancy, and poor asthma control. Exacerbations are associated with further increased risks for poor perinatal outcomes, including low birth weight, preterm birth, and small for gestational age (SGA) status, as well as an increa

Bipolar disorder (BPD) is a lifelong mental health condition characterized by symptoms of mania, depression, and often anxiety. BPD can have detrimental consequences for individuals during pregnancy and the postpartum period, as well as for their offspring. This is often due to underdiagnosis and/or misdiagnosis as unipolar depression. There is a high incidence of first episodes of BPD in pregnant and postpartum persons. Perinatal care providers need to routinely screen for BPD and assess for relapse among those with a previous diagnosis during the pregnancy and postpartum periods. Medication

The auxetic structures considered in this paper are three-dimensional periodic bar-and-joint frameworks. We start with the specific purpose of obtaining an auxetic design with underlying periodic graph of low valency. Adapting a general methodology, we produce an initial framework with valency seven and one degree of freedom. Then, we describe a saturation process, whereby edge orbits are added up to valency 16, with no alteration of the deformation path. This is reflected in a large dimension for the space of periodic self-stresses. The saturated version has higher crystallographic symmetry a

Calcified amorphous tumor (CAT) of the heart is a rare nonneoplastic cardiac mass that may exhibit symptoms resembling malignancy. In this report, we presented a 4-month-old male baby with repeated attacks of cyanosis and a cardiac murmur. Echocardiography revealed a tumoral noncircumscribed mass in the right atrium adhering to the interatrial septum which extends to the inferior vena cava. Cardiac exploration was carried out to excise the tumor. A histopathological study demonstrated the presence of thrombus-like tissue with extensive calcification and foreign body type giant cell reactions.

BACKGROUND: The use of MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine), also known as ecstasy, has increased in Norway in recent years. Since MDMA has the potential to be toxic and cause death, we studied whether increased availability and use correlates with the increase in MDMA-associated deaths.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: The study includes post-mortems with findings of MDMA in blood, linked to information about cause of death from the Norwegian Cause of Death Registry. These data were compared with the number of arrested drug drivers with MDMA detected in their blood as well as annual seizure statisti

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: HHPP is a rare type of hypokalemic PP that can occur when there is hyperthyroidism.Thyrotoxic periodic paralysis is due to increased influx of potassium into skeletal muscle cells which leads to profound hypokalemia and paralysis. Insulin and Epinephrine are also responsible for stimulating the Na-K-ATPase pumps which are over expressed during hyperthyroid state. Laboratory hypokalemia in the background of hyperthyroidism with sudden symmetric paralysis point toward the diagnosis.
CASE: We present a case of 25 year old male with limb weakness for 3hours following

Thyrotoxic periodic paralysis is a life-threatening complication characterized by acute paralysis of proximal muscles with severe hypokalemia in patients with a known or undiagnosed history of thyrotoxicosis. A 24-year-old man was brought to the emergency room with 1 month of progressively worsening lower-extremity weakness followed by urinary retention. He demonstrated severe motor weakness in proximal muscles with absent reflexes. Laboratory testing showed a dangerously low potassium of 1.3 mmol/L. Further testing to establish an etiology revealed a new diagnosis of thyrotoxicosis, and the p

Hypokalemic periodic paralysis (HPP) is a clinical condition of sudden-onset, recurrent transient episodes of weakness caused by severe hypokalemia. Thyrotoxic periodic paralysis (TPP) is a specific subgroup of the HPP spectrum, where hypokalemia occurs in the setting of thyrotoxicosis, and the repletion of potassium must be performed with caution. A male in his second decade of life with hyperthyroidism non-adherent to methimazole presented with acute-onset bilateral lower extremity weakness. On physical examination, the patient had diffuse thyromegaly and tremors on outstretched hands. Bilat

Primary hyperaldosteronism, also known as Conn's syndrome, is characterized by an independent and excessive aldosterone production in the adrenal cortex, causing hypernatremia, arterial hypertension, and, in some cases, potentially severe hypokalemia can occur. We report a case of a 45-year-old Caucasian woman, with a history of obesity and hypertension, who presented to the emergency room with a four-week evolution history of myalgia and ascending muscle weakness eventually resulting in tetraparesis. The initial blood analysis showed severe hypokalemia (1.5 mmol/L). Further laboratory studies
