Towards a Validation of the Three Pathways Model of Pathological Gambling.

With the aim of validating the three pathways hypothesis of pathological gambling (Blaszczynski and Nower in Addiction 97:487-499, 2002) 372 pathological gamblers meeting DSM IV (2000) criteria were assessed via a structured clinical interview as well as being subjected to personality tests and evaluation of their gambling practices. Our results show that it is possible to identify three subgroups corresponding to the three pathways: behaviourally conditioned problem gamblers, emotionally vulnerable problem gamblers and antisocial impulsivist problem gamblers. Our results particularly demonstr…

Comparison of Memory Function and MMPI-2 Profile between Post-traumatic Stress Disorder and Adjustment Disorder after a Traffic Accident.

OBJECTIVE: Differential diagnosis between post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and adjustment disorder (AD) is rather difficult, but very important to the assignment of appropriate treatment and prognosis. This study investigated methods to differentiate PTSD and AD. METHODS: Twenty-five people with PTSD and 24 people with AD were recruited. Memory tests, the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory 2 (MMPI-2), and Beck's Depression Inventory were administered. RESULTS: There were significant decreases in immediate verbal recall and delayed verbal recognition in the participants with PTS

Parietal and bi-occipital lobe infarction confounded by ethanol-induced optic neuropathy.

A frequent occurrence in geriatric and chronically ill patients is the exhibition of several simultaneously occurring and confounding health problems. This paper reports the case of a 61-year-old-white male who presented with an extensive history of multiple brain infarcts, hemiparesis, personality changes and varied visual complaints. Tests in the neurooptometric work-up for this patient included static automated perimetry, stereoacuity and optokinetic nystagmus evaluation. The results were suggestive of multiple cerebrovascular accidents which included the right and left occipital lobes as w

Identification of features associated with flying phobia in aircrew.

The psychological and physiological features of 20 aircrew consecutively referred for treatment of anxiety symptoms when flying were compared with a matched control group of uncomplaining aircrew. There were no significant differences between the two groups on psychometric tests of personality, though there were differences in skin conductance; the phobics had a higher rate of spontaneous fluctuation, and habituated less to a repeated auditory tone. More of the phobic group worried about their wives and acknowledged childhood and other adulthood phobias; more had a family history of an episode

The incidence and clinical presentation of neurosyphilis in Greater Copenhagen 1974 through 1978.

The incidence of neurosyphilis in the Greater Copenhagen region was found to be 0.30 per 100,000 inhabitants per year within a 5 year period. This figure is higher than incidence found in other studies from the last decades, but does not represent a statistically significant rise. Using hospital records from relevant departments 23 patients were described. General paresis and meningovascular cases were the most common manifestations. A tendency towards a changing clinical pattern of neurosyphilis was confirmed. Dementia and personality changes were the most frequently observed clinical symptom

Anxiety associated with exposure to organophosphate compounds.

Acute organophosphate poisoning is known to result in substantial behavioral abnormalities. We assessed psychiatric manifestations of exposure in workers less substantially exposed to organophosphate compounds and showing no obvious signs of toxicity. Commercial pesticide sprayers and farmers recently exposed to organophosphate agents were compared to control subjects on personality tests, a structured interview, and cholinesterase level. The commercial sprayers but not the exposed farmers showed elevated of anxiety and lower plasma cholinesterase than control subjects. Assessment of other beh…

Neurocognitive impairment in dramatic personalities: histrionic, narcissistic, borderline, and antisocial disorders.

Thirty-seven patients with personalities in the dramatic cluster (DSM-III-R histrionic, narcissistic, borderline, and antisocial) and 40 controls matched for age and gender were evaluated on 16 neurocognitive variables. The evaluation screened for deficits in functions of attention, memory, language, abstraction, and behavior planning/sequencing. Analysis of variance revealed significant deficits in neurocognitive performance among patients with dramatic personalities, particularly in subtests requiring multi-step, multi-element associative operations.

Correction criteria for the qualitative analysis of the prison population: drugs possession/consumption and gender violence.

INTRODUCTION: People with language difficulties cannot face challenges related to social skills. Those language disorders affect academic, work environments, and social interaction, leading to maladaptive and aggressive behaviors. Young inmates are at high risk of experiencing unrecognized language deficiencies. It is, therefore, necessary to analyze linguistic pathologies that can influence criminal behavior (drugs possession/consumption and gender violence crimes). There are many standardized tests to evaluate and detect language difficulties in adults in English. However, there are relative

Longitudinal Study on Psychological Distress Trajectory and Influencing Factors of Kidney Transplant Patients: A Potential Category Analysis Study.

INTRODUCTION: Although kidney transplantation confers substantial benefits, patients also exhibit varying levels of psychological distress attributable to multiple factors, with significant heterogeneity observed in their trajectories of change. OBJECTIVES: This study investigates latent heterogeneous trajectories of psychological distress in kidney transplant recipients (KTRs) from pre-transplantation to 6 months postoperatively. It tests the core hypothesis that high Neuroticism (N) and Psychoticism (P) scores serve as key distinguishing predictors of these trajectory classes. The analysis
