Comparison of the outcomes of phacoemulsification versus topical medication alone in canine diabetic cataracts: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Long-term comparisons of phacoemulsification with topical medication are limited in canine diabetic cataracts. OBJECTIVES: To compare outcomes of eyes submitted to phacoemulsification with those of topical medication for canine diabetic cataracts and identify risk factors for complications. METHODS: Through medical records review, 150 eyes (76 dogs) with diabetic cataracts were included; 58 eyes (31 dogs) underwent phacoemulsification (phaco-group) and 92 eyes (48 dogs) received ophthalmic solution alone (medication-group). The medication-group was divided into owner-led and vet-…

Characteristics and Risk Factors of Intraocular Lens Tilt and Decentration of Phacoemulsification After Pars Plana Vitrectomy.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics and risk factors of intraocular lens (IOL) tilt and decentration of phacoemulsification after pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) using swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT). METHODS: One hundred four eyes with prior PPV and 104 eyes without PPV undergoing uneventful cataract surgery were enrolled in this study. IOL tilt and decentration were measured by SS-OCT (CASIA2) 3 months postoperatively. RESULTS: The mean IOL tilt and decentration were greater in the PPV group (5.36 ± 2.50 degrees and 0.27 ± 0.17 mm, respe…

Phacoemulsification cataract surgery in the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta): surgical technique and outcomes in 10 cases.

Cataract removal using phacoemulsification was performed in 10 loggerhead turtles being rehabilitated after stranding. All turtles had significant systemic abnormalities and had cataracts either at the time of rescue or developed them during rehabilitation. Surgical difficulties encountered included an extremely soft globe that did not allow for a partial thickness corneal incision, incomplete topical anesthesia of the ocular surface with proparacaine, inability to dilate the pupil pharmacologically, a markedly shallow anterior chamber, a thick posterior capsular plaque in most cases, and diff…

BACKGROUND This article discusses the effectiveness of phacoemulsification cataract surgery with intraocular lens implantation in patients with wet age-related macular degeneration in the inactive phase of the disease. MATERIAL AND METHODS Forty-nine patients (50 eyes) aged 78.94±5.54 years, previously treated with intravitreal injections of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor agents, were qualified for a prospective, randomized 12-month study. The participants were divided into 2 groups. Group I consisted of 25 patients (25 eyes) who were subjected to phacoemulsification cataract surgery.…

Collagen matrix vs mitomycin-C in trabeculectomy and combined phacoemulsification and trabeculectomy: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Antifibrotic agents are commonly utilized to enhance the success rates of trabeculectomy. Novel approaches to further improve success rates and reduce the risks of complications are needed. The purpose of this study was to compare intraocular pressure (IOP)-lowering efficacy and safety of trabeculectomy or combined phacoemulsification and trabeculectomy with mitomycin-C (MMC) vs. Collagen Matrix (CM). METHODS: A prospective, multicenter, randomized controlled trial was performed. Ninety-five eyes of 94 patients with uncontrolled glaucoma despite medical therapy, without previous i…

Outcomes of Phacoemulsification Using Different Size of Clear Corneal Incision in Eyes with Previous Radial Keratotomy.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate visual outcomes and complications after phacoemulsification in eyes with cataract and previous radial keratotomy (RK) cuts using different sizes of clear corneal incisions. METHODS: The study was a retrospective study. Thirty eyes with cataract and previous RK underwent phacoemulsification and intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. Among them 7 eyes had 8 RK cuts, 13 eyes had 12 RK cuts, and 10 eyes had 16 RK cuts. Phacoemulsification and IOL implantation were performed through a 2.0-3.2 mm clear corneal incision by a single surgeon. In the 8 RK cuts group, 3.2 mm clear c…

Aqueous cytokines as predictors of macular edema in patients with diabetes following uncomplicated phacoemulsification cataract surgery.

This study aims to ascertain whether cytokines in the aqueous humor can predict macular edema (ME) in diabetic patients following uncomplicated phacoemulsification cataract surgery. Undiluted aqueous humor samples were obtained from 136 consecutive type 2 diabetic patients who underwent cataract surgery. The concentrations of 27 cytokines were measured in aqueous humor using the multiplex bead immunoassay. At the final follow-up examination, 116 patients completed 4 weeks of follow-up, and the incidence of macular edema was 29.31% (34 patients) 4 weeks after cataract surgery. Compared to the M…

Health-related quality of life after cataract surgery with the phacoemulsification technique and intraocular lens implantation.

PURPOSE: Disease-specific instruments have shown significant gains in measuring health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in subjects having cataract surgery. However, the usage of generic instruments has resulted in conflicting evidence. METHODS: In this prospective study, we have evaluated the impact of cataract surgery on subjects' HRQoL measured with a 15-dimension generic instrument, the 15D. The HRQoL of cataract subjects was compared with that of an age- and gender-standardized sample of the general population in Finland. A total of 152 subjects (mean age 74 years, 66% females) with a fir

Comparison of the keratometric corneal astigmatism and refractive astigmatism after phacoemulsification and foldable intraocular lens implantation.

Here we aimed to define keratometric and refractive astigmatism in a series of patients who underwent phacoemulsification, using small corneal incision and implantation of foldable intraocular lenses. Furthermore, we compared keratometric astigmatism and refractive astigmatism of the patients both before and after surgery. We performed a follow-up study of patients with newly diagnosed cataract before and after phacoemulsification surgery. Eighty eyes from 78 patients with a mean age of 62.9 ± 12.03 (32-86) years were studied. Thirty-nine (48.8 %) were male and 41(51.2 %) were female. All subj…

Visual outcome of early and late pars plana vitrectomy in patients with dropped nucleus during phacoemulsification.

BACKGROUND: Dislocated lens fragments in the vitreous cavity can cause potentially serious complications. This retrospective study aimed to evaluate the visual outcome of patients who underwent pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) for posteriorly dislocated lens fragments after cataract phacoemulsification. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on all consecutive cases (60 patients) with pars plana vitrectomy performed for retained lens fragment. In 30 eyes (50%), PPV was performed within 1 week of cataract extraction and in 30 eyes (50 %), PPV was performed more than 1 week post cataract extra…

Use of pars plana vitrectomy with phacoemulsification in vitreous cavity to treat complete posterior dislocation of lens.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to evaluate pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) with phacoemulsification in the vitreous cavity for treatment of complete posterior dislocation of the lens without any damage to the lens capsule. METHODS: We evaluated factors such as cause of dislocation, scleral fixation of an intraocular lens (IOL), preoperative and postoperative visual acuity, corneal endothelial cell density, and intraoperative and postoperative complications. RESULTS: Displacement in the eleven eyes studied was mostly caused by ocular trauma and was idiopathic (four eyes each). Scleral …
