Topographic Organization of Saccade-Related Response Field Properties in the Marmoset Posterior Parietal Cortex.

Despite various histological, electrophysiological, and imaging studies, the topographic organization of saccade-related activity in the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) has been notoriously difficult to characterize. In part, this is because areas of interest in PPC are often embedded deep in sulci in macaques and humans. Understanding the extent of topographic organization in PPC can provide insights into the computation contributions of PPC. The lissencephalic cortex of the common marmoset offers a unique opportunity to investigate fine-scale topographic organization in PPC. Recordings were

Increased observation of predictable visual stimuli in children with potential autism spectrum disorder.

Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often exhibit social communication impairments and restricted, repetitive behaviors (RRB). Previous studies have shown that children with ASD prefer observing repetitive movements over random movements, reflecting RRB symptoms, but the developmental timeline of this preference remains unclear. New evidence suggests that children with ASD may develop predictive processing abilities for repeated behaviors, providing insight into how they recognize and respond to predictable patterns. This study employed a preferential-looking paradigm to examine wheth

Dynamic categorical memory distortion from "visual verbs".

We see the world not only in terms of features and objects (such as the color or shape of a ball), but also in terms of a set of abstract "event types" (such as a ball swinging or bouncing). This form of categorical perception occurs spontaneously during passive viewing, as a part of visual processing itself - even when task-irrelevant, and even when verbal encoding is discouraged or disrupted. Here we demonstrate that such representations yield an adaptive type of dynamic categorical memory distortion, based on the different predictions afforded by different event types. This was inspired by

Salience maps for judgments of frontal plane distance, centroids, numerosity, and letter identity inferred from substance-invariant processing.

A salience map is a topographic map that has inputs at each x,y location from many different feature maps and summarizes the combined salience of all those inputs as a real number, salience, which is represented in the map. Of the more than 1 million Google references to salience maps, nearly all use the map for computing the relative priority of visual image components for subsequent processing. We observe that salience processing is an instance of substance-invariant processing, analogous to household measuring cups, weight scales, and measuring tapes, all of which make single-number substan

Sensitization of Visually Induced Motion Sickness by Prior Provocative Physical Motion.

INTRODUCTION: Habituation to motion has therapeutic applications for motion sickness desensitization and rehabilitation of patients with vestibular disease. Less attention has been devoted to the opposite process: sensitization. METHODS: Subjects (N = 50) were randomly allocated to four sequences: Baseline visual stimulus; then 15 min of time gap; cross-coupled motion (C-C) or a Control condition; then a time gap of 15 min or 2 h; then a retest visual stimulus. Motion exposures were for 10 min or until moderate nausea, whichever was sooner. The visual stimulus was a scene rotating in yaw at 0

Comparing performance between a deep neural network and monkeys with bilateral removals of visual area TE in categorizing feature-ambiguous stimuli.

In the canonical view of visual processing the neural representation of complex objects emerges as visual information is integrated through a set of convergent, hierarchically organized processing stages, ending in the primate inferior temporal lobe. It seems reasonable to infer that visual perceptual categorization requires the integrity of anterior inferior temporal cortex (area TE). Many deep neural networks (DNNs) are structured to simulate the canonical view of hierarchical processing within the visual system. However, there are some discrepancies between DNNs and the primate brain. Here

A shared neural code for the physics of actions and object events.

Observing others' actions recruits frontoparietal and posterior temporal brain regions - also called the action observation network. It is typically assumed that these regions support recognizing actions of animate entities (e.g., person jumping over a box). However, objects can also participate in events with rich meaning and structure (e.g., ball bouncing over a box). So far, it has not been clarified which brain regions encode information specific to goal-directed actions or more general information that also defines object events. Here, we show a shared neural code for visually presented a

A source for category-induced global effects of feature-based attention in human prefrontal cortex.

Global effects of feature-based attention (FBA) are generally limited to stimuli sharing the same or similar features, as hypothesized in the "feature-similarity gain model." Visual perception, however, often reflects categories acquired via experience/learning; whether the global-FBA effect can be induced by the categorized features remains unclear. Here, human subjects were trained to classify motion directions into two discrete categories and perform a classical motion-based attention task. We found a category-induced global-FBA effect in both the middle temporal area (MT+) and frontopariet

Transient Oscillations of Neural Firing Rate Associated With Routing of Evidence in a Perceptual Decision.

To form a perceptual decision, the brain must acquire samples of evidence from the environment and incorporate them in computations that mediate choice behavior. While much is known about the neural circuits that process sensory information and those that form decisions, less is known about the mechanisms that establish the functional linkage between them. We trained monkeys of both sexes to make difficult decisions about the net direction of visual motion under conditions that required trial-by-trial control of functional connectivity. In one condition, the motion appeared at different locati

Dynamic changes in spatial representation within the posterior parietal cortex in response to visuomotor adaptation.

Recent studies used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) population receptive field (pRF) mapping to demonstrate that retinotopic organization extends from the primary visual cortex to ventral and dorsal visual pathways, by quantifying visual field maps, receptive field size, and laterality throughout multiple areas. Visuospatial representation in the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) is modulated by attentional deployment, raising the question of whether spatial representation in the PPC is dynamic and flexible, and whether this flexibility contributes to visuospatial learning. Ability to Process Multisensory Information Is Impaired in Open Angle Glaucoma.

PRÉCIS: Patients with glaucoma demonstrated deficiencies in their ability to process multisensory information when compared with controls, with those deficiencies being related to glaucoma severity. Impaired multisensory integration (MSI) may affect the quality of life in individuals with glaucoma and may contribute to the increased prevalence of falls and driving safety concerns. Therapeutic possibilities to influence cognition in glaucoma should be explored. PURPOSE: Glaucoma is a neurodegenerative disease of the optic nerve that has also been linked to cognitive health decline. This study

Application of action observation therapy in stroke rehabilitation: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Numerous studies have described the positive effects of action observation therapy (AOT) on motor recovery among patients with stroke. However, there is no standardized procedure for when and how to intervene with AOT. OBJECTIVES: Thus, we reviewed and analyzed previous studies to provide a guideline for the application of AOT in stroke rehabilitation. METHOD: We searched PubMed, Cochrane Library, and EMBASE from inception to October 31 2022, using title and abstract search terms of "action observation" and "stroke" or "hemiplegia." Of 4108 potential articles, 29 articles (sample

Stimulus-evoked and resting-state alpha oscillations show a linked dependence on patterned visual experience for development.

Persistent visual impairments after congenital blindness due to dense bilateral cataracts have been attributed to altered visual cortex development within a sensitive period. Occipital alpha (8-14 Hz) oscillations were found to be reduced after congenital cataract reversal, while participants performed visual motion tasks. However, it has been unclear whether reduced alpha oscillations were task-specific, or linked to impaired visual behavior in cataract-reversed individuals. Here, we compared resting-state and stimulus-evoked alpha activity between individuals who had been treated for dense b

The occipital place area represents visual information about walking, not crawling.

Recent work has shown that the occipital place area (OPA)-a scene-selective region in adult humans-supports "visually guided navigation" (i.e. moving about the local visual environment and avoiding boundaries/obstacles). But what is the precise role of OPA in visually guided navigation? Considering humans move about their local environments beginning with crawling followed by walking, 1 possibility is that OPA is involved in both modes of locomotion. Another possibility is that OPA is specialized for walking only, since walking and crawling are different kinds of locomotion. To test these poss

Motion opponency at the middle temporal cortex: Preserved motion information and the effect of perceptual learning.

Motion opponency, first observed within the primate middle temporal cortex (MT), refers to the suppressing effect of opposite motion directions on neuronal activity. Namely, when opposing motion directional signals stimulate an MT neuron's receptive field, this neuron's response is comparable with that induced by flicker noise. Under such suppression, it is unknown whether any directional information is still represented at MT. In this study, we applied support vector machine (SVM) learning to human functional magnetic resonance imaging data to investigate if any motion defined orientation inf

Transient neuronal suppression for exploitation of new sensory evidence.

In noisy but stationary environments, decisions should be based on the temporal integration of sequentially sampled evidence. This strategy has been supported by many behavioral studies and is qualitatively consistent with neural activity in multiple brain areas. By contrast, decision-making in the face of non-stationary sensory evidence remains poorly understood. Here, we trained monkeys to identify and respond via saccade to the dominant color of a dynamically refreshed bicolor patch that becomes informative after a variable delay. Animals' behavioral responses were briefly suppressed after

Preparatory attention to visual features primarily relies on non-sensory representation.

Prior knowledge of behaviorally relevant information promotes preparatory attention before the appearance of stimuli. A key question is how our brain represents the attended information during preparation. A sensory template hypothesis assumes that preparatory signals evoke neural activity patterns that resembled the perception of the attended stimuli, whereas a non-sensory, abstract template hypothesis assumes that preparatory signals reflect the abstraction of attended stimuli. To test these hypotheses, we used fMRI and multivariate analysis to characterize neural activity patterns when huma

The role of the interaction between the inferior parietal lobule and superior temporal gyrus in the multisensory Go/No-go task.

Information from multiple sensory modalities interacts. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we aimed to identify the neural structures correlated with how cooccurring sound modulates the visual motor response execution. The reaction time (RT) to audiovisual stimuli was significantly faster than the RT to visual stimuli. Signal detection analyses showed no significant difference in the perceptual sensitivity (d') between audiovisual and visual stimuli, while the response criteria (β or c) of the audiovisual stimuli was decreased compared to the visual stimuli. The functional con

A systematic and meta-analytic review on the neural correlates of viewing high- and low-calorie foods among normal-weight adults.

In the context of current-day online shopping, people select foods based on pictures and using their visual systems. Although there are some reviews of previous neuroimaging studies on appetitive behaviors, the findings on neural activation in response to pictures of high- and low-calorie foods seem inconsistent. This study aims to systematically review, integrate, and meta-analyze neuroimaging evidence of viewing high- and low-calorie foods. There were 25 samples from 24 studies, totalizing 489 normal-weight participants (311 female, 160 male, and 18 of unknown sex). We conducted a systematic

Context Binding in Visual Working Memory Is Reflected in Bilateral Event-Related Potentials, But Not in Contralateral Delay Activity.

Successful retrieval of a specific item from visual working memory (VWM) depends on the binding of that item to its unique context. Recent functional magnetic resonance imaging studies of VWM manipulating memory set homogeneity have identified an important role for the intraparietal sulcus in context binding, independent of any role in representing stimulus identity. The current study explored whether the contralateral delay activity (CDA), which is an event-related potential (ERP) component derived from posterior electrodes that tracks the amount of information held in VWM, might also be sens
