Hyperspectral imaging as a diagnostic tool to differentiate between amalgam tattoos and other dark pigmented intraoral lesions.

The goal of this project is to identify any in-depth benefits and drawbacks in the diagnosis of amalgam tattoos and other pigmented intraoral lesions using hyperspectral imagery collected from amalgam tattoos, benign, and malignant melanocytic neoplasms. Software solutions capable of classifying pigmented lesions of the skin already exist, but conventional red, green and blue images may be reaching an upper limit in their performance. Emerging technologies, such as hyperspectral imaging (HSI) utilize more than a hundred, continuous data channels, while also collecting data in the infrared. A t

Speckled acral hypopigmentation in an adolescent.

We report a case of speckled acral hypopigmentation in a 12-year-old girl. She presented with asymptomatic hypopigmented macules on the hands and feet. This rare entity is a proposed variant of reticulate acropigmentation and of unknown etiology.

Pigmented purpuric dermatosis-like sarcoidosis.

Sarcoidosis is a chronic multisystem granulomatous disease of unknown origin. Recently, a purpuric variant of cutaneous sarcoidosis resembling pigmented purpuric dermatosis (PPD) has been documented. Herein, we describe another unusual case with clinical features mimicking PPD, characterized by brownish macules and flat-topped papules with a slightly purpuric component on the legs and dorsum of the feet and histopathological features consistent with sarcoidosis. We designated this unusual clinical presentation as "PPD-like sarcoidosis".

Granulomatous pigmented purpuric dermatosis: an unusual variant associated with hyperlipidemia.

Granulomatous pigmented purpuric dermatosis (PPD) is a rare subtype of pigmented purpuric dermatosis that is typically seen in women of Far East Asian descent on the distal lower extremities and feet. Granulomatous PPD is a benign condition that does not typically require treatment. Hyperlipidemia has been seen in over half of the eighteen cases reported in the literature. We report an unusual presentation of granulomatous PPD seen in a 71 year-old Caucasian female with hyperlipidemia.

Diet-induced pigmented purpuric dermatosis.

Pigmented purpuric dermatoses (PPD) are chronic and relapsing disorders characterised by a localised or generalised purpuric rash. Even though the clinical presentation of PPD subtypes varies, they have a similar histopathology. The aetiology is largely unknown, but trigger factors, such as drugs, infections and systemic illnesses have been described. To our knowledge, this is the only case showing widespread PPD lesions not only induced but also rapidly provoked by dietary factors, namely Coca Cola and apple-cherry fruit spritzer.

Laser treatment of erythematous/hypertrophic and pigmented scars in 26 patients.

Fifteen patients with erythematous/hypertrophic scars and 11 patients with postinflammatory hyperpigmentation were treated with a flashlamp pumped pulsed-dye laser at 585 nm or a flashlamp pulsed-dye laser at 510 nm. An average of 1.8 treatments resulted in an average improvement of 77 percent. Forty-seven percent of the patients had 100 percent improvement after one to three treatments. Eleven patients with postinflammatory hyperpigmentation were treated with the flashlamp pumped pulsed-dye laser at 510 nm with a pulse width of 300 ns. There was an average of 80 percent improvement with 1.45

'Dyschromia in confetti' as a side effect of topical immunotherapy with diphenylcyclopropenone.

"Dyschromia in confetti" is a pigmentary disturbance that so far has not been reported to have occurred during topical immunotherapy. In a group of 243 patients treated with diphenylcyclopropenone for alopecia areata, four patients showed a similar pattern of hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation. In one patient the pigmentary disturbance was confined to the site of diphenylcyclopropenone application on the scalp. Besides dyschromic skin changes on her scalp, one patient had development of a hyperpigmentation on her forearms. In the remaining two patients, dyschromia in confetti became manife

McCune-Albright syndrome with multiple bilateral café au lait spots.

A 7-week-old infant developed hyperpigmented lesions at 5 days of age that gradually progressed to sharply demarcated, medium-brown macules of unusual configuration involving the neck, trunk, buttocks, upper arms, and right upper thigh. A biopsy specimen of a representative lesion showed changes of epidermal melanosis consistent with café au lait spot. At age 15 months the patient developed a limp. Roentgenographic evaluation showed widespread, bilateral changes of fibrous dysplasia, most severe in the right pelvis, femur, and tibia. At the present time he has no evidence of precocious puberty

Progressive pigmented purpuric dermatosis: effect of psoralens and ultraviolet A irradiation.

The administration of 8 - methoxypsoralen combined with UV-A exposure (PUVA) was found to be effective in a case of progressive pigmented purpuric dermatosis (PPPD). After one month (16 therapeutical sessions), favourable cleaning occurred in the skin areas clinically affected by purpuric lesions. Histological examination after the intensive phase of PUVA therapy showed decreased masses of the extravasated erythrocytes formerly situated around the dermal capillaries, and diminution of hemosiderin deposits. In addition, the inflammatory infiltrates were less intense following the maintenance ph

[Incontinentia pigmenti in 2 newborn infants].

Incontinentia pigmenti (IP) is a genodermatosis, which is of X-linked dominant transmission, uncommonly diagnosed in newborn babies. The skin lesions usually develop in 4 stages: inflammatory, hypertrophic, pigmentary and regressive. The authors report 2 cases of IP in female newborn babies who were previously treated for pyodermatitis.

The yellow nail syndrome in an 8-year-old girl.

Yellow nail syndrome is characterized by the triad of abnormally shaped, slow-growing, yellow nails, lymphedema, and chronic respiratory tract disease. Nail changes may precede the other features by several years. The syndrome is most often seen in middle-aged individuals and has not been documented in children under age 11 years. We cared for an 8-year-old girl with this disorder.
