Plants produce a diverse array of secondary metabolites (SMs) that play critical roles in adaptation to environmental challenges and defense against pathogens and herbivores. Brassica species accumulate a wide range of SMs, including glucosinolates and their hydrolysis products (isothiocyanates, nitriles, thiocyanates, epithionitriles, and oxazolidinethiones), phenolics, tannins, cyanogenic glycosides, alkaloids, flavonoids, and terpenoids. These compounds function as defense molecules, antioxidants, signaling mediators, and regulators of plant growth and stress responses. This review summariz

Root meristem growth factors (RGFs) are pivotal regulators of root growth in plants and are critically involved in the regulation of root development in fruit trees. In this study, we constructed a comprehensive small secreted peptide library from 64 plant species. Using a structure-based screening strategy, we identified a total of 495 RGF genes. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the modern RGF gene family originated in ferns and exhibited an evolutionary pattern of initial contraction and subsequent expansion, consistent with the evolutionary emergence and diversification of plant root sys

Tea anthracnose, caused by Colletotrichum camelliae, poses a serious threat to tea yield and quality. While certain transcription factors have been implicated in stress responses, the core transcriptional networks governing immunity in tea plants remain largely elusive. In this study, we identify CsWRKY33 as a central regulator that orchestrates immune responses and metabolic reprogramming during C. camelliae infection in tea plants. Transcriptome analysis revealed that CsWRKY33 is significantly induced upon fungal challenge and functions downstream of both pattern-triggered immunity (PTI) and

BACKGROUND: Engineering root microbiomes holds great promise to enhance plant health. Enhanced plant resistance via breeding or genetic modification can promote recruiting beneficial microbes, but is challenging to achieve.
RESULTS: Here we showed that calcium (Ca) addition caused significant changes in tomato physiology, resulting in enhanced immunity towards the pathogen Ralstonia solanacearum along with increased levels of salicylic acid (SA), sugar content, and defense enzyme activities in roots. High Ca levels significantly altered the root microbiomes, enriching sixteen bacterial genera

Plants' immobility renders them highly vulnerable to heat stress, which disrupts water relations, photosynthesis, respiration, and cellular homeostasis, ultimately reducing growth and yield. To survive, plants deploy a multifaceted heat stress response (HSR) that integrates calcium signaling, molecular chaperones, antioxidant enzymes, and phytohormonal networks. This review synthesizes recent advances in understanding the molecular crosstalk between phytohormones and protein synthesis during plant heat stress responses, with a particular focus on two key HSR modules: protein synthesis pathways

ARGONAUTE (AGO) proteins play crucial roles in plant defence against virus invasion. To date, the role of OsAGO2 in rice antiviral defence remains largely unknown. In this study, we determined that the expression of OsAGO2 in rice was induced upon rice black-streaked dwarf virus (RBSDV) infection. Using transgenic rice plants overexpressing OsAGO2 and Osago2 mutants generated through transposon-insertion or CRISPR/Cas9 technology, we found that overexpression of OsAGO2 enhanced rice susceptibility to RBSDV infection. Osago2 mutant lines exhibited strong resistance to RBSDV infection through th

Understanding the genetic basis of pathogen susceptibility in various crop plants is crucial to increasing the stability of food, feed, and fuel production. Varietal differences in defence responses provide insights into the mechanisms of resistance and are a key resource for plant breeders. To explore the role of salicylic acid in the regulation of defence in cacao, we demonstrated that SA treatment decreased susceptibility to a pod rot pathogen, Phytophthora tropicalis in two genotypes, Scavina 6 and Imperial College Selection 1, which differ in their resistance to several agriculturally imp

Anthracnose fruit rot caused by Colletotrichum truncatum is a major constraint in Chilli production, leading to heavy pre- and post-harvest losses. Developing resistant cultivars through marker-assisted breeding is the most sustainable management strategy. Identification of molecular markers tightly linked to anthracnose fruit rot resistance loci in Capsicum baccatum accessions will be of great use in chili crop improvement programs to introgress resistance loci into elite backgrounds. Inheritance studies in an F₂ population (IIHR 4491 × PBC81) indicated inhibitory gene action (13S:3R) governi

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a diverse group of chemicals of growing concern due to their persistence and potential impacts on human and environmental health. While the occurrence and toxicity of several legacy PFAS are relatively well understood, knowledge of emerging PFAS, particularly in free-living organisms, remains limited. This study investigated the occurrence and biological effects of a mixture of thirty-eight legacy and emerging PFAS nearby a Fluoropolymer Production Plant (FPP) located in Northwestern Italy. Legacy and emerging PFAS were measured in eggs of two res

CRISPR/Cas9-mediated dual knockout of VviGAI1 and VviFLC in grapevine promotes early flowering and induces distinctive morphological changes, offering novel genetic resources for breeding. CRISPR/Cas9-mediated genome editing offers a transformative approach for grapevine improvement. In this study, we achieved simultaneous knockout of two central flowering regulators VviGAI1, a DELLA protein ortholog, and VviFLC, a floral repressor in Vitis vinifera 'Cabernet Sauvignon' using a dual-sgRNA vector system. Remarkably, all 15 independent edited lines exhibited biallelic mutations in both genes, pr

Leaf color mutants are commonly characterized by altered chlorophyll content and aberrant chloroplast development, making them valuable models for investigating photosynthetic mechanisms and chloroplast biogenesis. In this study, an albino mutant was isolated from a population of transgenic maize breeding lines. Genetic analysis indicated that the mutant phenotype is inherited in a Mendelian manner and is controlled by a single nuclear locus. This was supported by a χ2 test performed on the T2 generation, which confirmed a segregation ratio consistent with 3:1 (176:68, χ2 = 1.07 < χ20.05 = 3.8

To investigate a possible Clostridioides difficile reservoir in the Czech Republic, we performed a study in 297 calves from 29 large-scale dairy farms. After enrichment, faecal samples were inoculated onto selective agar for C. difficile. From the 297 samples, 44 C. difficile isolates were cultured (prevalence of 14.8%, 10 farms). The Holstein breed and use of digestate were associated with C. difficile colonisation (p ˂ 0.05). C. difficile isolates belonged to the ribotype/sequence type: RT033/ST11 (n = 37), RT126/ST11 (n = 6) and RT046/ST35 (n = 1). A multiple-locus variable-number tandem-re

Understanding the inheritance of resistance to Fusarium ear rot is a basic prerequisite for an efficient resistance breeding in maize. In this study, 250 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) along with their resistant (BT-1) and susceptible (N6) parents were planted in Zhengzhou with three replications in 2007 and 2008. Each line was artificially inoculated using the nail-punch method. Significant genotypic variation in response to Fusarium ear rot was detected in both years. Based on a genetic map containing 207 polymorphic simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers with average genetic distances of 8.8

Nitrogen (N) deficiency constrains crop productivity by limiting shoot growth, yet the adaptive mechanisms that reprogram shoot development under low N conditions remain largely elusive. Here, we identify a major locus, OsATG3 (autophagy-related protein 3), controlling tillering in response to N deficiency through a genome-wide association study in rice. OsATG3 functions as an essential autophagy component and promotes selective degradation of IDEAL PLANT ARCHITECTURE1 (IPA1) via OsATG8d-mediated autophagy in shoot apices, thereby enhancing N-responsive tillering. Natural variation in the prom

Altica deserticola is a major pest of the medicinal plant Glycyrrhiza uralensis, whose leaf-feeding damage reduces licorice yield and quality. Here, we integrated physiological assays, transcriptome and metabolome analyses across 0, 6, 12, and 24 h of A. deserticola feeding to dissect licorice defense responses. Compared with the control (0 h), A. deserticola feeding elevated lipoxygenase activity, promoted accumulation of total flavonoids, condensed tannins and soluble sugars, and induced emission of volatiles including (E)-2-hexanal, (E)-3-hexen-1-ol acetate, and (Z)-calamenene. Non-histone deacetylation is a widespread and reversible post-translational modification (PTM) dynamically regulated by histone acetyltransferases (HATs) and histone deacetylases (HDACs). Although initially characterized as a chromatin-associated mechanism controlling transcription, recent discoveries demonstrate that HDAC-mediated non-histone deacetylation extends far beyond gene regulation, targeting diverse transcription factors and functional proteins across cellular pathways. Here, we summarize advances in Arabidopsis, rice, and wheat recently, highlighting how non-histone deacetylation m

Tea gray blight caused by Pestalotiopsis theae threatens tea production. We investigated the differential responses in two cultivated ("JX", "YJ") and two wild tea resources ("R", "S") via metabolomics, transcriptomics, and in vitro analyses. Phenotypically, resistance ranked "JX" > "R" > "YJ" > "S", with "JX" and "R" showing stronger resistance. Metabolomically, a total of 1062 differentially accumulated metabolites (DAMs) responded to infection. Resistant materials were enriched with lipids, alkaloids, etc., while susceptible materials were enriched with flavonoids, amino acids, etc. Transcr

Plant phenotypes arise from complex interactions among genetic, epigenetic, and environmental factors. Deciphering the molecular mechanisms responsible for phenotypic variation requires comprehensive multi-omics approaches that integrate diverse genomic, transcriptomic, and environmental datasets. Here, we perform high-throughput phenotyping of rice subspecies cultivars (Nip and 93-11), covering key growth stages under heat, drought, and salt stress. Using the EfficientNet framework, we generate image embeddings for cultivar classification and stress-type identification. Whole-genome bisulfite

Leaf senescence is a tightly regulated developmental process orchestrated by multiple transcription factor (TF) families. Although C2H2-type zinc finger proteins are known to participate in various aspects of plant growth and abiotic stress responses, their specific role in regulating leaf senescence remains poorly understood. Here, we show that knockout mutation of the C2H2-type zinc finger TF gene ZOS202 (LOC_Os02g02424) resulted in delayed leaf senescence under both dark-induced and natural conditions, while overexpression lines exhibit accelerated leaf senescence, as indicated by reactive
