STUDY OBJECTIVES: While sleep apnea has been studied in children with sickle cell disease (SCD), little is known about sleep disorders in adult sickle cell patients. The objective of this study was to evaluate sleep disordered breathing and its polysomnographic characteristics in adult patients with sickle cell disease.
METHODS: The analysis cohort included 32 consecutive adult SCD patients who underwent a comprehensive sleep evaluation and overnight polysomnography in an accredited sleep center after reporting symptoms suggesting disordered sleep or an Epworth Sleepiness Scale score ≥ 10. Ep…

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Whether the therapeutic nasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) derived from manual titration is the same as derived from automatic titration is controversial. The purpose of this study was to compare the therapeutic pressure derived from manual titration with automatic titration.
METHODS: Fifty-one patients with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) (mean apnoea/hypopnoea index (AHI) = 50.6 ± 18.6 events/h) who were newly diagnosed after an overnight full polysomnography and who were willing to accept CPAP as a long-term treatment were recruited for the study. Man…

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether parents' observations can be used to predict the severity of the obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) in children.
STUDY DESIGN: Sixty-five children with OSAS diagnosed by overnight polysomnography were consecutively recruited and classified as having severe or non-severe OSAS according to the obstructive apnoea index (OAI) and the oxygen saturation measured by pulse oximetry (SpO2) nadir. Parents were asked to complete a questionnaire about the child's breathing difficulties at night.
RESULTS: Twenty-eight patients were classified as severe OSAS and 37 as…

We wished to explore the relationships between waking HMPAO uptake and visually scored polysomnography. We hypothesized that HMPAO activity would correlate positively with slow wave sleep measures the same night. Eight unmedicated unipolar patients with current DSM-IV major depression (17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale score 21.5+/-2.9) and seven control subjects received polysomnography on 2 consecutive nights. On the afternoon following the adaptation night, subjects received cerebral SPECT, with 15 mCi Tc-99m-HMPAO injected while subjects performed the Continuous Performance Task. Pa…

Central sleep apnea (CSA) and periodic breathing are unusual findings described in pediatric patients with congestive heart failure. However, CSA has not been reported in children with pulmonary hypertension. We hereby report on a 10-year-old girl with idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension who had frequent central events in a periodic breathing fashion seen in her polysomnography, which was normalized following medical treatment leading to improvement of the pulmonary pressures.

We studied 44-year old man with heart failure (ejection fraction -25%). Obesity, arterial hypertension, snoring and excessive daytime sleepiness suggested concomitant obstructive sleep apnoea. Limited polysomnography with Polymesam revealed typical Cheyne-Stokes respiration with mainly central apnoeas (RDI=48/hour). We did not find any obstructive episodes during sleep study. Patient responded to CPAP therapy and apnoea hypopnoe index decreased to 12/hour on 8 mbar pressure.

We used single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) to study striatal [(123)I]beta-CIT binding and polysomnography to study periodic leg movements during sleep (PLMS) in eleven patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease (PD). The reduced striatal [(123)I]beta-CIT binding was significantly correlated with the number of PLMS. We propose that striatal dopaminergic nerve cell loss is involved in the increased number of PLMS in PD patients.

In addition to overnight polysomnography, there are two special tests with which every sleep technologist should be familiar: the multiple sleep latency test and the maintenance of wakefulness test. These two tests classify excessive daytime sleepiness using objective data. The role of the sleep technologist is to understand and perform an accurate test so that sleep clinicians can use that data in diagnosing and treating their patients. This article provides step-by-step directions for performing these tests.

A patient with Marfan's syndrome and obstructive sleep hypopnea syndrome is reported. She had complained about insomnia, tiredness and hypersomnolence lasting 2 years. A complete nightly polysomnography revealed 94 obstructive hypopneas (the hypopnea index was 12.85) and no obstructive apneas. Presumably an increased laxity of the pharyngeal wall was responsible for the phenomenon. A therapy with CPAP was started, but was not tolerated by the patient. Oxygen therapy on the other hand turned out to be effective and well tolerated.

Primary snoring is mainly the bed partner's problem and not that of the snorer. The request for treatment arises from how annoying the snoring is and how sensitive the bed partner is to noise. In addition to a thorough medical history and an ENT examination, a polysomnography should be always performed to differentiate between primary snoring, upper airway resistance and obstructive sleep apnoea syndromes. Primarily weight loss and avoidance of alcohol in the evening as well as devices and surgery are used in the treatment of snoring.

This review describes the wide spectrum of episodic phenomena that can occur during sleep. These phenomena include arousal disorders of nonrapid eye movement (NREM) sleep, rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder, movement disorders, psychiatric disorders, and epileptic seizures. Each of these entities is discussed in detail, focusing on their clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and treatment. Essential historic elements that distinguish these events and the role of video-EEG-polysomnography in their differential diagnosis are emphasized.

Treatment-emergent central sleep apnea is a phenomenon that has been reported after many obstructive sleep apnea treatment modalities. We present a case of demonstrating treatment-emergent central sleep apnea while using the tongue stabilizing device therapy. This case adds to the evidence that showed the effect of the supine position on the severity of central sleep apnea and shows the advantage of polysomnography follow-up after oral appliance therapy for central apnea assessment.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) has been poorly characterised in patients with bronchiectasis despite potential bidirectional clinical impacts. This systematic review and meta-analysis determined the prevalence of OSA confirmed by polysomnography in cystic fibrosis and non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis patients. A comprehensive search of MEDLINE, EMBASE and Cochrane databases through September 2025 identified observational studies reporting polysomnography-confirmed OSA prevalence in adult bronchiectasis patients. Five studies encompassing 256 patients met inclusion criteria, with data extracte…
